Greetings from the top of the stairs…

A school’s values are its broad tendencies to prefer or give

importance to certain things over others. When promoted and sustained over time, these priorities—core values—characterize the school and become so embedded in its culture that they are often unconscious to those who hold and practice them. Such is the case with stewardship, the more diffi cult of our core values to articulate to others.

This is “old school” connectivity, not the digital sort. In this edition, we highlight some outstanding examples of stewardship. We bring you stories and reports from our faculty and students who have set their hearts on doing good things. This youthful form of philanthropy is a fi rst step toward becoming a valuable participant in the world of giving.

It is fi tt ing that this edition dedicated to stewardship would include our annual Report of Contributions. Getti ng to Know You

The school year opened on August 27 with 588 students—a good

sign that Erskine continues to thrive. The freshmen had their own day on campus before the rest of the student body arrived so they could become bett er acclimated to their new school.

On September 10, the freshmen class participated in the annual Camp EA day at Erskine, which provides an opportunity for members of each homeroom to get to know each other bett er.

Freshmen advisee groups partici-pated in a number of team-building activities throughout the day,

including an advisee group fl ag decorating challenge, a

full class relay race constructed and implemented by retired teacher Lars Jonassen, a photo scavenger hunt, and several small group challenges. Each group was assigned two student leaders, who helped facilitate the

activities throughout the day. The activities were well received, and the freshmen homerooms seemed to really come together as a result of this event.

Erskine Ranks HighIn the Mainebiz magazine’s Fact Book 2014 issue published this fall, Erskine Academy earned commendable ratings in

two categories. In the “Schools with the highest graduation rates” category (based on Maine Department of Education 2012-2013 graduation rates), Erskine ranked 5th out of 15 schools with 97.3%. In the “Maine’s largest private schools” (based on total 2013 fall enrollment), Erskine ranked 4th out of 20 schools.

Future Leaders Learning Through Model State Program

The Erskine students who participated in Model State in November had a very productive weekend, according to

advisor Lori Dube. Brady Grott on ’15 was recognized for his leadership as Governor for the entire delegation. He, along with his cabinet members Secretary of Treasury Adam Bovie ’15 and Chief of Staff Jen Kochaver ’15, did an outstanding job running the weekend. Senate Chair Justin Davis ’15, Senator Abby Waceken ’15, and House Chairs Ally Bonsant ’17 and Katie Keller ’17 all represented Erskine well.

Out of over 60 interested candidates, the following Erskine students were selected as part of a 25-member delegation that will represent Maine at the Conference of National Aff airs this summer, which is a great honor. Those students are Brady Grott on, Adam Bovie, Jen Kochaver, Katie Keller, and Ally Bonsant.

EA Music Director Jim Johnson joins a traditi onal Haiti an RaRa band on the shaker.

Taking the Music to Haiti by JaJa Marti n, Executi ve Director, Maine Music Outreach

During the summer of 2014, Maine Music Outreach (MMO)

sent two groups comprised of students from Lincoln Academy and Erskine Academy to the Holy Trinity Music Camp in Cange, Haiti. Erskine students Rebecca Reed ’14, Richard Preston ‘14 and Jennifer Kochaver ‘15 took part in this rewarding ten-day experience. Erskine Academy Music Director Jim Johnson traveled with the group as chaperone and camp volunteer while in Haiti. His remarkable talents and insights added great value to the program.

Located in the Central Plateau region of Haiti, the camp is set in a lush tropical forest. With countless sets of steps to navigate between rehearsals and meals, the students moved to the unique rhythm of each camp day.

The MMO students participated in band with their Haitian peers, played in ensemble groups with Haitian students and interna-tional teachers, and taught sectional classes and private lessons. Most of the instruc-tion they received was given in Haitian Creole or French, and many of the students they worked with had only a few words of English.

All three Erskine students rose to the challenges posed by the language and cultural barriers and succeeded with music instruction, communication, and making new friends. They each came away with an innate understanding of the Haitian culture and the diffi culties faced each day by the Haitian people.

“Even though they have so litt le, they are eager to share everything they have,” one student remarked.

Another student noticed that, “Music is more than just a pastime for the Haitian students; it’s a joy, and a deep and meaningful part of their lives.”

programs; Morgan Fowle ’15 is fulfi lling the role this year at Erskine.

Notably, Erskine alumni are followed for two years after gradua-tion, giving them the support they need during the crucial fi rst two years of college. The MELMAC program is giving Erskine students the best opportunities for success after gradua-tion. Erskine has a 75% FAFSA applica-tion completion rate, which ranks it near the top among Maine public schools.

“Connecti ng Aspirati ons to a Plan” Update

The MELMAC team has spent numerous hours planning and

implementing programs made possible through the grant from the MELMAC Education Foundation. The objective of the grant is to improve the ability of Maine students to bett er understand options for continuing education after their high school graduation and to increase college enrollment.

Programs at Erskine funded by the grant have included van trips for seniors to visit colleges in Maine; van trips to local businesses; and College Applications Days to off er seniors the opportunity to get hands-on help with the college application process.

Presenters have included college admissions representatives, volunteers from MaineCAN (College Access Network), Finance Authority of Maine (FAME), MELMAC, and Maine Education Services (MES), and members of the Erskine Board of Trustees.

Junior and senior families were invited to att end a supper and workshop to review the process of completing the FAFSA college fi nancial aid application. The Maine Association of Financial Aid Administrators, through its School Support Initiative, has made available fi nancial aid offi cers to work one-on-one with families.

Members of the previous year’s graduating class are invited back to campus for a luncheon and to share feedback about their experience in their fi rst year out of high school, and collect scholarship monies. Over 40 members from the Class of 2014 returned this January.

This spring, freshmen will visit UMaine Augusta for campus tours, activities, and an overview of the admissions process, and sophomores will make campus visits to several Maine colleges. JMG students are visiting manufacturing plants and other service facilities to learn about alternative post-secondary options.

Meet Erskine’s New Librarian by Crystal Shamas-Douglas

Welcome! Welcome to the Erskine Library. This year Erskine has

a new librarian, and I am thrilled to be here. My name is Crystal Shamas-Douglas, and I will strive hard to continue the excellent work that Naomi Homan did for so many years for the students and staff at Erskine

Academy. I am assisted greatly in this pursuit by Evelyn Emerson, who has contributed her excellent organiza-tional and creative skills to the library for the last 13 years.

Libraries are no longer grim quiet places. Today, the best libraries contribute to the social, cultural, and academic success of students. This is achieved by librarians working with teachers and students to provide everyone with the best print and digital resources for their research and leisure reading needs.

The Erskine Academy Myrtle H. Austin Library has a wonderful collection of fi ction and nonfi c-tion books for all members of the school community and an evolving collection of online eBooks and databases to provide current information for research assign-ments and topics of interest. I want the Erskine library to be a place where students and staff are comfortable exploring their interests, asking questions, and making new discoveries. Our two new comfy reading chairs have defi nitely contributed to the comfort of our students!

In an eff ort to have the library be a vibrant, creative space, we will host a number of diff erent programs. In October, “Morning Music” with the Erskine Jazz Band provided a musical start to our day and was appreciated by over 50 students. In January, EA’s Percussion Explosion group performed for a large, enthusiastic crowd. Future plans for programming include poetry readings, guest speakers, more music, and student/staff art exhibits. The library will continue to evolve to meet the information and lifelong learning needs of the Erskine Academy community. Crystal Shamas-Douglas has an MA in American Studies from Michigan State University and has almost completed her MA in Library and Information Science from the University of South Carolina. She is a Canadian and lives with her husband in Oakland, ME. She has a daughter in the Peace Corps and a son in his last year of University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

Community Service) spent time helping out at the Maine Greyhound Placement Service in Augusta www.greyhoundplacement.com.

JMG Takes to the Road

October 3 was National Manufacturing Day, and students

from Erskine Academy and JMG were invited to tour the 86,000 square foot Formtek Maine manufacturing facility in Clinton. See photos above. Students were greeted by Formtek employees, who took them around the facility in small groups. The students learned about the products Formtek makes and the machines that make the parts

that go into products we use every day. Some examples of the products that are manufactured by Formtek are school bus panels; BBQ grills; vacuum cleaners; and computer chip holders.

The students learned what kind of opportunities are available in the manufacturing industry and what classes they should be taking now and in a post-secondary school in order to work in the manufacturing industry.

One of the biggest take away points for the students was that they can have a good paying job in manufacturing.

JMG (Jobs for Maine’s Graduates) is an year-round experiential program. Alumnus Hauns Bassett ’93 is the JMG Specialist serving Erskine. To learn more about JMG, visit www.jmg.org/programs/high-school-program.

TIME AND TALENTIt is people who make Erskine such a great place, and the number of people who give of themselves to the school is astounding. The list is long and we would be sure to miss naming someone if we att empted to include one here. Thank you to all the volunteers, parents, teachers, staff , community members, and all others who give unselfi shly of their ti me and talent.

EA Employee Scholarship Fund

Erskine faculty and staff go above and beyond in many ways to support our students and school. The EA Employee Scholarship Fund is one of those ways, and has an annual goal of raising at least $3,000 from employees to be awarded to graduati ng seniors. At the June 2014 graduati on, four seniors received scholarships. Thank you to all faculty and staff who contribute to this meaningful fund on an ongoing basis.
