Hello Everyone, I would like to wish all of you a Happy Holiday and a happy and prosperous New Year. May the jolly old man dressed in red with the white beard be generous to you all. I would like to thank you for your generous gifts to the Association in behalf of the ‘Toys for Tots’. December is still young and we could always use more money and gifts for the kids of the Marines and Sailors aboard Camp Pendleton. Let us not be selfish in our gifts to these kids whose mom or dad is serving in a hostile environment. This is the season that many of us travel to distant places visiting grandma and grandpa, other relatives and friends. Whether you are driving, taking the train, bus, or going by air keep it safe and have a wonderful time. In the words of Jolly Ole Saint Nick, ‘Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night’. rifle range. We had a crew working with rakes and shovels on the trap, rifle and pistol ranges on WAD Patrol (Dusty work). What a mess, there must have been several hundred thousand wads. The tractor driver, Gary Locke, was working the bank, and we loaded the piles in the bucket and we filled the bed of the gator again and again. Lonny had a load of food, sodas, water, hotdogs, hamburgers, chili, etc. Roy did the cooking and we were all rewarded with a great meal. Ed Migdal and son painted the trap house on Friday and Saturday and Ed was back on Sunday with rake in hand. We had a raffle and Lonny passed out trap cards to three members of the work party. Thanks again guys, we make a great team. Save a Sunday in four months and we can do it again. Time and Date are to be determined. We really need 50 volunteers the next go around. Remember: Safety is First, and please help us keep our range clean. Thanks Again, Bud Smith

NRA Awards $10,000 in Scholarships to Outstanding Junior Members

The National Rifle Association has selected three of its top Junior Members to receive the 2007 Out-standing Achievement Youth Award, recognizing them for their active participation in the community, the classroom, and the shooting sports. Overall, $10,000 in scholarship money was awarded to the win-ners thanks to a generous donation from Brownells, Inc., the world's largest supplier of firearms acces-sories and gunsmithing tools.A $5,000 scholarship was awarded to first-place winner Juliann Terry, 18, of Newcastle, Wyo. A mem-ber of the Rapid City Rifle Club, Terry placed first in .22 rifle at the 2006 Wyoming 4-H Shooting Sports competition and later represented the state of Wyoming at the 2006 4-H Nationals, placing fifth in the country in smallbore competition. In addition to being a fine shooter, Terry is also active in her community, having presented the Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program to local elementary school students and volunteering as a teen leader at 4-H workshops and summer camps in her home county. She excels in the classroom as well, sporting a 4.0 grade point average while playing clarinet in the Newcastle High School Band.

"Juliann exemplifies all of the qualities that we look for in awarding the Outstanding Achievement Youth Award," said NRA Youth Programs Manager Larry Quandahl. "She is an exceptional young person, one who has demonstrated extraordinary leadership qualities, complete dedication in the class-room, and an unwavering commitment to the shooting sports."

The second-place award and its accompanying $3,000 scholarship went to eighteen-year-old Scott Thomas of Poca, W.Va. Thomas, an NRA Life Member, is a member of the Putnam County Gun Club Junior Smallbore Team. He is a three-time smallbore competitor in the National Matches at Camp Per-ry, Ohio, and he has served as a volunteer at numerous shooting camps. Thomas was selected to attend the 2006 Youth Education Summit (YES) in Washington, D.C., earning a hunting trip for his exception-al performance at the event. He hopes to one day shoot on the West Virginia University rifle team.

Jonathan Warhol, 16, of Leonardo, N.J., was the third-place winner, earning a $2,000 scholarship. Warhol is an apprentice NRA Certified Shotgun Instructor and has achieved the rating of Distinguished Expert in the shotgun course of fire of the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program. Warhol has distinguished himself on the skeet field, becoming the 2006 New Jersey Junior Champion in 28 gauge. An honor student at New Jersey's Mater Dei High School, Warhol teaches others the joys of shotgun shooting through the Women On Target® Program, youth day events, and the junior shooting program at the Central Jersey Rifle and Pistol Club.

All NRA Junior Members (or NRA Regular or Life Members under age 18) who are current members of an NRA-affiliated club or state association and who have completed one NRA Basic Firearm Train-ing Course are eligible for the award. Applicants must also have earned at least one rating through the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program and submitted three letters of recommenda-tion, a copy of their school transcript, and a 1,000-word essay entitled, "What the Shooting Sports has Taught Me."

Applications for next year's Outstanding Achievement Youth Award are due at NRA Headquar-ters no later than May 1, 2008. To learn more about the program or how to apply, please contact NRA's Youth Programs Department at (703) 267-1505 or visit www.nrahq.org/youth/achievement.asp. Inc.

Trapshooting Etiquette

1. Make your entry far enough in advance, so that the office can properly

process it. Clubs want shoots to start on time, but they can’t if

shooters don’t sign up enough in advance so that squadding and

record keeping can be done.

2. Be ready when your squad is called and also when it is your turn to

shoot in the squad.

3. Do not lean over each time to pick a shell out of a box on the ground,

or to pick up empties. Have your shells where you don’t have to

stoop to get them.

4. Do not raise your gun until the shooter ahead of you fires.

5. Remain at your post until the 5th man has fired, then move to the next

position at the end of the round. Stand facing the traps until the last

man has fired the last shot. If you are leadoff, do not fire until all

squad members are in position after each change.

6. Never load your gun before changing positions. When going from

position 5 to position 1, turn to the right to avoid bumping guns with

the man coming from post 4.

7. Load only one shell at a time except in doubles. Close the gun only

when it is your turn to shoot. If a delay occurs, remove the shell.

8. Do not let ejected shells from your gun hit or annoy other shooters.

9. Do no unnecessary talking when you are on the firing line. When you

are not on the firing line, keep your voice down when you are around

other squads which are shooting.

10. Time your shooting to establish rhythm in the squad. Call in a loud

clear voice so there is no confusion about when the puller should

respond.

11. Be a sportsman at all times. Be sure your competitors get what is due

them, but do not be a target claimer.

12. Observe safety rules. Do not point your gun at another, even if it is

unloaded. On the firing line, always keep your gun pointed toward

the ground or the trap houses.

13. Shooters are always willing to have you look at their guns, if you ask

permission first. Do not pick up another’s gun from the gun rack and

handle it without asking.

Seasons greetings to all. Well, it is rifle raffle time again. One of you lucky range masters, trap masters or shoot chairs will be winning the custom Ruger 10/22 rifle at the general membership meeting this month. That’s right, Milt Johnson has been diligently tabulating the names and if you make contact with Ray Bucholz, you will be given your envelope with the raffle tickets inside for the drawing. For those of you who feel you might want to get in a few extra licks, tabulations will continue up until December 10, 2007. Remember, each time you stand a range master duty post, you get an entry into the raffle. Three (3) tickets will be drawn. The first ticket will be the winning ticket. The two tickets after that will be alternates.IF THE WINNER IS NOT PRESENT AT THE DECEMBER MEETING, THE WINNING NUMBER WILL BE POSTED ON THE BULLETIN BOARD IN THE TRAP RAMADA. YOU WILL HAVE THIRTY (30) DAYS TO CLAIM THE PRIZE. IF NOT CLAIMED AFTER THE THIRTY DAYS, THE NEXT ALTERNATE NUMBER WILL BE POSTED.

Juniors: Unfortunately, we have to change the prize for the “Decorate the Tree” giveaway. The Wii game system we were promised has not surfaced. Instead, we will be giving away special prizes to three (3) juniors. (first, second, third) All entry decorations must be on the tree by December 10, 2007. Remember, all decorations have to be handmade and must have the name of the maker somewhere on it.

There are still some members that seem to be having trouble with the front gate. Please remember you must push the # symbol before entering the combination number.

Range masters: Please remember the schedule books for sign up are in the Trap Ramada. Also, Kenneith Notter will be making it possible for all of us to schedule our duty days on line. Please call Kenneith to get your login information.

OH! News from the North Pole. Santa says he will be giving a special prize to one lucky rangemaster who shows up at the December general membership meeting wearing his/her rangemaster red shirt, red cap and name badge.

Play Safe, Stay Safe
