REMEDIAL ACTION SCHEMESMaintain system stability with SEL remedial action schemes (RAS) that can detect abnormal conditions in power systems and take automatic corrective actions that include generation and load shedding, reactive compensation, and customized solutions. Integrate these schemes into your current system using the knowledge and experience of SEL engineers.

REMEDIAL ACTION CONTROL SYSTEM SOLUTIONS

Detect unstable power conditions and preserve system stability using intelligent, contingency-based actions, such as flexible load and generation shedding. Control and automatically respond to multiple, consecutive system contingencies with high-speed Mirrored Bits® communications or IEC 61850 GOOSE messaging. Solutions include the following:

• Prioritization of loads and generation to satisfy various system contingencies

• Interarea oscillation detection and control

• Reactive compensation

• Wide-area protection and control

• Generation control systems

These solutions come with feasible communications channels, device options, and protocols, including synchrophasors. Terminal Blocks

SYNCHRONIZING SYSTEMSSEL Synchronizing Systems send control signals to a generator’s governor and exciter to bring slip and voltage difference across an open breaker into permissive band. Then, the system initiates a close command at the slip rate compensated advanced angle to close the circuit breaker at precisely zero degrees angle difference.

Systems can be built around the autosynchronization functions available in the SEL-700G Generator Protection Relay. Or, SEL can build more advanced systems around the pre-engineered autosynchronizer that uses the SEL-451 Protection, Automation, and Bay Control System when purchased with a separate configuration and documentation CD.

APPLICATIONS INCLUDE:

• Advanced Systems Manual and/or automatic.

• Autosynchronization Systems Advanced reporting and communications capabilities and high-speed communications over long distances.

• Pre-Engineered and Customized Solutions Purchase the standard SEL-451, or ask SEL for a customized solution.

DNA (DISTRIBUTION NETWORK AUTOMATION)SEL’s complete DNA™ technology combines fast protection with flexible automation and communications for a customized distribution automation solution that makes your system safer, more reliable, and more economical. SEL DNA systems range from distributed intelligent devices and sensors to wide-area centralized controls. These fast and efficient systems automate all parts of the distribution grid, from neighborhoods to distributed generation sites, and improve efficiency by simplifying conservation voltage reduction (CVR) schemes. SEL has the answers today for the energy needs of tomorrow.

ANALYZE

Analyze and detect permanent faults, broken jumpers, loss of substation source, and lockout due to miscoordinated protective devices.

ISOLATE

The distribution network is broken into feeder section zones that can be isolated or energized from one or more sources using fault-interrupting or switching devices (e.g., breaker, recloser, and load-break switch). Evaluate the system to determine if any unfaulted zones are de-energized.

RESTORE

Automatically restore unfaulted zones using alternative sources (if available). Change settings groups to better coordinate the protective devices in the new network topology. Restore upstream zones that were de-energized due to miscoordination of the protective devices.

Example System ArchitectureThe SEL system includes a proprietary algorithm for accurate autosynchronization.

CYBERSECURITYCybersecurity isn’t something that can be achieved by one person, product, or technology. Real system-wide protection starts with the understanding that it takes teamwork to achieve success. SEL believes that combining layered security protection with the efforts of protection engineers, information technology personnel, and compliance managers leads to a secure and compliant solution.

POWER SYSTEM PROTECTION

Power engineers demand the most reliable systems and services for their control and protection systems. Settings cannot be disturbed, cables cannot be

COMMUNICATIONS AND NETWORKING SOLUTIONSswitched, and significant latency cannot be tolerated. Engineers must have full control of their critical systems and maintain full access control to their equipment 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Cybersecurity must protect these assets and enable power engineers to accomplish their work efficiently.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (IT)

IT personnel understand how to work in large, dynamic network environments. They know what it takes to monitor their environment, protect their servers and clients, and provide the best possible technological services to

their organization. IT personnel need solutions that are compatible with their infrastructure and will enhance their capabilities by simplifying their jobs.

REGULATORY COMPLIANCE

Compliance managers need devices that assist in NERC CIP compliance, both now and in the future. This demands scalable solutions that are managed centrally. Keeping up with regulations is a demanding and necessary job. Technology must collect and report the correct data to enable easier compliance in addition to providing the appropriate functionality.

SEL engineers design advanced, integrated communications and network systems for clients across the globe. We are focused on providing customized solutions that meet the challenges of today’s critical electric power

infrastructure. Whether it is a single radio link or a multisite communications network, SEL provides comprehensive services that take into account your project needs and budget. SEL engineers perform communications and network

architecture design, prepare schematics and diagrams, program settings, and provide on-site factory acceptance testing, commissioning support, and training.
