KLEIN’S KORNER
APRIL 2014
With spring comes new growth, so I thought this would be a good time to talk about new growth as it relates to your co-op and gallery. The net worth has grown tremen-dously—sales are up and expenses are
down, our juried shows keep getting bigger and better, and membership has increased as has the number of gal-lery exhibitors. With the existing income producing pro-grams, (Mothers’ Day and the Hub Cap promotion) and those programs soon to be (Art Train), our scholarship and grant programs will be comfortably funded into the near future. Seeds have been planted, and with your help, 2014 should go down as a bumper crop year for growth.
ED KLEIN, President
JUDI MOREO
April Featured Artist
Come to the gallery during April and enjoy Judy’s newest collection of watercolor and acrylic paintings. Judi has created a collection of paintings which she calls her “Exploration of Life.” After only 3 years of train-ing with Ed Klein at City Lights, her paintings appear in private collections in the US, Canada, and Africa. Most of her paintings have been reproduced into greeting cards. This year she studied acrylic painting with ac-claimed wildlife artist, Jeff Tift. Paintings of both medi-ums will be displayed. For more information, call City Lights Artists’ Co-op Gallery at (702) 260-0300.

The deadline for submissions will be the Wed. after the Board meets. Thank you for participating in naming our newsletter.
April 26-- City Lights Celebrates!
Please bring your friends and family to enjoy our fresh 2nd Quarter exhibit, and the Henderson Heritage Day Parade! With a new crowd of parade spectators and our new Gallery signs pointing to us, we expect brisk pedes-trian traffic at the Gallery. You get free prime display space for the day! (Small commission for sales.) We need Volunteers to help set up tents and demo skills. This is another opportunity to show off our refurbished gallery. Media and other key contacts will be invited.
RSVP for your space today!
With the help of Carol Bilodeau, we'll be updating our Facebook presence. We're looking for even more advice and counsel about how to make our online presence more vibrant and more relevant. If you have skills, please let someone on the Marketing Team know.

Mother's Day weekend, May 10-11, will be busy at the Gallery. We plan to set up 4 tents on Army St. (closed to auto traffic) for demos and displays. Sign up TODAY to RSVP to show your art! Once again, our new signs, festival announcers, artist demos and more should lure a nice group of potential buyers into the gallery. Please volunteer your talents! The 14 spaces in the convention center for that event have been spoken for, and booths will be as-signed by lottery. If you missed this opportunity, sign up to show your work on Army St. outside the Gallery.

MEET ANNE CARTER
Anne Carter has been taking photographs her whole life, and this hobby became serious when she retired in 1995. She is mostly self-taught by studying how-to books, magazine articles and tak-ing workshops. As a kid, she decided drawing, and painting weren’t for her, saying, “I couldn’t even stay in the lines in coloring books and never liked art classes in school. I’m a photographer.” Anne received her first Brownie Hawkeye cam-era when she was about 12 years old. Later, she grew into Canon 35mm cameras and eventually to digital equipment. Anne said, “in addition to in-stant gratification, I like having complete control over my work, from shutter release to the final print.” She grew up in the San Francisco Bay area, but spent most of her adult life in NY City. In 1997, she moved to Las Vegas. It’s closer to travel to the plac-es where she finds her favorite subjects: land-scapes, particularly old barns, a covered bridge, or a mill or lighthouse scene. She also likes to photo-graph flowers and Native American rock art. Anne explained, “For me it’s all about the light. I may stand in one place for a while waiting for the light to shift before taking a photo. This re-quires much patience. Then again, I can be driv-ing aimlessly and suddenly see beautiful rays of light hitting the weathered shingles of an old barn. I may just have time to stop the car, jump out and take a single shot before the magic disappears. An-sel Adams once said, ‘Sometimes I get to places just when God’s ready to have somebody click the shutter.’ Sometimes I am lucky enough to be that person.” Anne is currently exhibiting at City Lights and in Boulder City Art Guild Gallery where she is a mem-ber. Her work has been in other Las Vegas galleries since 2001, as well as in New Jersey and Arizona. Anne is our secretary/membership director, and a member of the Nevada Camera Club, Nevada Rock Art Fdn, the American Rock Art Research Assn (ARARA), and the Utah Rock Art Research Assn (URARA). She received the Oliver Award for pho-tography from ARARA and was named Photogra-pher of the Year by the Nevada Camera Club. If you’ve not seen Anne’s work, go to www.annecarterphoto.com for some eye candy!
COMING EVENTS
Farmers Market on April 17: We will have a

COLORED PENCIL CLASS
Anna Hammer’s First Colored Pencil Class had 6 stu-dents attend on short notice. All enjoyed the class, learned how to use colored pencils, type of paper that works best, the importance of a sharp point, how to layer and blend colors, and how much patience it takes to use this medium. The fun assignment was to color a pink or blue cupcake! Several expressed an interest in drawing portraits. Anna is willing to teach groups on an “as requested” basis. If you are interested, please con-tact City Lights Gallery at (702) 260-0300.

WHAT’S NEW
Gallery changeovers — Ed Klein will write a procedure to handle the quarterly changeovers, take-ins, and pick-ups for gallery shows. At least 2 people are needed.
Thanks to the City for applying new stucco over the wood along the back wall of the building! Lee Moses will head a Maintenance committee to make recommendations for repairs.
Tents & Grids—Lee Moses will es-tablish policy for rental of the tents and grids that belong to City Lights.
Art Train—Jim Longwell and Lee Mo-ses are determining the available display space and making a layout. Details are progressing. The Board is also researching the possibility of an Art Cruise/dinner on the boat at Lake Las Vegas.
Photo Album—Al Matwiejow has been capturing Gallery events and has compiled an album. Look at it on your next visit. He suggested we re-place the table and tablecloth where the album is displayed.
Greeting Card Sales—Jim Longwell would like to see sales of cards do-nated to the scholarship fund, be-cause recording sales is time con-suming and tedious. It was decided that this should be the artist’s deci-sion. The board discussed whether to mail card sale checks for $2.80 or hold funds until $10 is accumulated. This will be discussed with treasurer, Chris Mazglad.

SEND YOUR LOVE
Lee Moses, our Gallery Director, is recovering well from major surgery. His activities are still restricted, but he looked good at the April Board meeting!
Senior Gallery Tour
Jim Champlin and Mary Amick hosted a half dozen of the W. Flamingo Senior Center members on April 3rd for a tour of the Gallery and a demo by Ed Klein. They thor-oughly enjoyed it. One commented, “I learned more from Ed’s demo than I have from all my prior classes!” Kudos to Ed for his excellent instruction. The group had lunch at The Coffee House. All enjoyed the visit. We are hoping to do it again possibly with Heritage Senior Cen-ter. If you are looking for an outing for your organiza-tion or group, please contact the Gallery. We can do art demos; or videos can be shown. Consider lunch at a nearby restaurant for the group. It’s fun. It’s education-al, and may increase our membership. Call the Gallery for more details and give us the name of your group.
