Our escalator modernization packages will totally revamp your old escalator – easily, quickly and with cost-saving benefits. Whatever your needs, we can deliver your customized upgrade.
Revamp
your building.
Enhanced safetyWhen wear and tear affects the components of an escalator, the risk of incidents rises. Escalator modernization can reduce this risk. Moreover, the latest safety features can help prevent passenger misuse.
Energy efficiencyBy modernizing specific escalator components you can save energy and reduce your power bill. Our state-of-the-art components offer more modern modes of operation and are simply much more energy-efficient than older ones.
More attractive appearance Revamp your escalator, replace old parts, and rejuvenate it with aesthetic, modern-day design options to make your building more appealing.
Enhanced functionality Enhancing the functionality of your escalator can enable it to be integrated into a state-of-the-art building management system, for example, and helps to improve day-to-day operations.
05 06
Give your passengers a safer ride. The older an escalator is, the greater the potential for incidents. At thyssenkrupp we learn from best practices and customer feedback worldwide to develop safety upgrades that help to reduce the risk of incidents.
Unit safetyTransform your escalator to satisfy the latest standards through additional safety features that previously did not exist.
Building interfacesThe gaps between a unit and the building are a potential accident risk. Integrating new safety features helps to mitigate that risk.
Missing step/palletVarious kinds of missing step monitors can be integrated to detect a missing step and stop an escalator before people could get injured.
Step/pallet gap lightingLEDs that clearly indicate the edges of the steps help passengers entering the unit to step onto the tread surface safely, and leaving passengers to identify the end of the unit and thus avoid stumbling.
ElectrostaticsThe electrostatic discharge users sometimes feel on an escalator is an unpleasant experience. To avoid this happening, we can install a metal or rubber roller to replace one of the existing rollers of the handrail guiding.
Safety barriers*To prevent users from taking a shopping trolley and baggage cart onto a unit, you can have suitable barriers installed at landings.* not allowed in ASME region – please check local legislation
Fixed balustradesThese safety curtains, which are installed parallel to the balustrades and even higher than them, further reduce the risk of passengers climbing over the side of an escalator.
Anti-climbing structuresIf these devices are installed parallel to the escalator (at the bottom end), they can significantly reduce the risk of passengers climbing on the outside of the balustrades.
Skirt brushesRetrofitting skirt brushes reduces the risk of accidents caused by people or objects becoming trapped in the gap between the steps and the skirting profile.
Handrail speed variationA monitoring device stops the escalator if the handrail speed deviates by more than 15% from the speed of the steps or pallets for more than 15 seconds. This ensures that a passenger’s hand is never dragged away from their body.
Star-delta operation Star-delta runs an escalator in two different modes at unchanged speed. During the start and if no load is detected, the escalator runs in star operation to reduce the current. If a load is detected, the motor switches to delta operation.
Intermittent operation Intermittent operation is an energy-saving option for infrequently used escalators. The unit only starts to move if a passenger approaches. If nobody is on the unit, it stops entirely and traffic lights indicate its readiness.
Frequency converter Enjoy up to 60% energy savings in no-load drive with a frequency converter that runs the escalator at two different speeds: an energy-saving lower speed when no-one is on the unit; and the nominal speed as soon as someone enters.
Energy efficiency controller (EEC) You can cut your unit’s energy consumption by up to 20% in no-load and part-load drive, as the EEC automatically adapts the voltage to the different load conditions.
07 08
Save energy in your day-to-day operations. As the cost of energy increases, it is more important than ever to enhance the efficiency of all the power-consuming units in your building. Old escalators frequently have no energy-saving features. Today’s technology, in contrast, makes enhanced energy efficiency possible and can help you achieve a green building labeling, for example. And of course our energy-saving options can be combined to suit your specific needs.

Make your building more appealing.Old escalators not only look less attractive; passengers notice the ride quality has deteriorated too. Through our escalator modernization packages you can make your building more appealing and give your passengers a much more comfortable ride, which will enhance the customer experience in your building.
Escalator lighting – good for businessAttractive escalator lighting, e.g. skirt band or truss lighting or soffit light stripes, greatly adds to the visual appeal of your building – and increases the probability that users will come back. As lighting also has a proven impact on people’s moods, you can increase their propensity to spend money.
Low noise packageOur low noise package features sound insulation measures, such as an anti-hum coating for the inside of the steps, the outer cladding, and the comb and cover plates. This package will minimize the amount of noise your escalator makes – and the lower the noise levels in your building, the more people will enjoy spending time there.
Deckings, claddings, cover and comb platesAfter years of frequent service cover plates tend to show noticeable signs of wear and tear. Immediate replacement is advisable. Fitting new cover plates improves the appearance and safety of existing units.
Aesthetics & comfortAn attractively lit and quietly running escalator is not only aesthetically appealing but also offers passengers a more comfortable ride.
11 12
Heated componentsIf your escalator is outdoors, the winter months can be a real challenge, with step chains possibly freezing up or cover plates covered in snow. Heating systems in these components ensure your escalator continues to operate smoothly in cold weather.
Building monitoring systemExisting units cannot be displayed in your building management system. However, integration is possible if an upgrade is carried out. The technical integration service we provide ranges from potential free contacts for basic monitoring right up to detailed status messages and state-of-the-art monitoring systems.
Full replacement of electricsOld cables can lead to functional issues, e.g. safety switches not functioning properly or diagnostic messages being affected. Through fully replacing the cables in an existing unit the electronics can be upgraded to the current state of the art. Integrating the unit into your building management system or introducing the latest energy-saving measures are just two of the possible benefits.
Enhance your unit’s functionality. Our escalator modernization packages enable youto add a number of useful functions to your unit and incorporate the latest technology, e.g. integration into your building management system.
Additional functionalitiesEnhancing your escalator with additional state-of-the-art functions will help to make your unit more efficient and, ultimately, more economical.
