ESL in Tennessee: The WIDA Connection

Who is considered an English LearnerA Student:
who is age 3-21 who is enrolled or preparing to enroll in an elementary school or
secondary school; who was not born in the United States or whose native language
is a language other than English; who comes from an environment where a language other than
English has had a significant impact on the individual's level of English language proficiency; or
whose difficulties in speaking, reading, writing, or understanding the English language may be sufficient to deny the individual — • the ability to meet the State's proficient level of achievement on

English language learners communicate for Social and Instructional purposes within the school setting.
English language learners communicate information, ideas and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of Language Arts.

English language learners communicate information, ideas and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of Science.
English language learners communicate information, ideas and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of Social Studies.

English as a Second Language Assessments
Screener/Formative
The W-APT is the official screener in TN. This determines whether or not a student will receive ESL services.
The MODEL may be used for formative assessment of ESL students.
Summative
The WIDA ACCESS will be given in February as the annual English language proficiency assessment.
The WIDA ACCESS will be the source of data used to calculate Annual Measureable Achievement Objective (AMAO) 1 and 2.
