Have a nice reading!

Lublin, 29 IV 2011
Dear Erasmus Students,
I would like to present a new issue of "ESN Like!".
First of all, you should read the description from regional celebrations
“Discover Europe” (from Olsztyn and Lublin). I also recommend an article
about meeting Erasmiś and bisons. Pay attention to two photoreports: "News
from the [SGH] board" and the colorful photos of Erasmus and his friends of
ESN SWPS. How to cope with the emptiness after Erasmus? Answers given
by Madzia Porazińska. Do you know the mission, vision and values of ESN?
Check it out in this issue of “ESN Like!” !
Feel free to email me - [email protected]. I encourage you to write your
own articles about Poland, Erasmus Exchange, events, ESN sections‟
activities or about your countries, or simply about anything that you would like
to share with us.
Have a nice reading!

EVENTS
”Surprise me Europe!”
March was a month full
of work! One of the main projects
was exploring Europe seen by
eyes of participants of 8th edition of
photography competition “Discover
Europe”. As we all know it nothing
lasts forever so even our local
stage ended with the last day
of March. It was tough to choose
the best among so many beautiful
and breathtaking pictures,
but finally the jury made choice.
Ending ceremony took place
in the hall of the University of
Warmia and Mazury and started
few minutes after 6 pm on 14th
of April. There was a mysterious
aura in the room and tension held
by Aleksandra Legacka and Artur
Kocięcki (members of ESN
Olsztyn), who guided us through
the jury’s decisions.
Participants could choose
between 3 categories: “My Europe,
My home”, ”Surprise me Europe!”
and “Citizen of Europe”.
The results were kept in secret,
so nobody knew what would
happen, especially the audience,
whose enthusiastic reactions gave
this event a great atmosphere.
Firstly commendations were
announced and the awards went
to: Paula Czerwińska, Wioletta
Wołoszyn (who also won 3rd place
in „Citizen of Europe”), Alicja
Grzymowicz, Paweł Sobczyk
and Adam Falkowski, who became
the winner of the evening because
of achieving also the first prizes
in “My Europe, My Home”
and “Surprise me Europe!”. Third
place award won: Sonia Frydrych
and Anna Ewa Wróblewska.
By the decision of the jury second
place belonged to: Marcin
Malarewicz, Grzegorz Kłoda
and Bartosz Zembrzuski. Last
but not least the winner of „Citizen
of Europe” category became
Maciej Borowiec. After the awards
were given by the jury to
the participants, everybody was
invited to see the photos that won
and a little treat.
5
Local stage of the
competition was a success. The
participants of the ceremony could
drop out from grey reality
of everyday life and dive into
“the world of stopped moments”.
Everybody left the building with
smiling faces. Everything was held
thanks to the sponsors,
the members of ESN Olsztyn and
- most importantly - thanks to
Martyna Zagórska, without whom
this whole event wouldn’t have
become reality. Now we are
waiting impatiently for information
from Warsaw about the future
of the photos that won.

Discover Europe – Final Gala
Discover Europe contest was
in the minds of our section’s
members for the last few weeks.
The Discover Team was doing
everything to show students from
Lublin what Discover Europe is.
From every direction students
were bombarded with information
about the contest. Creative
members of our section didn't only
inform students at information
marketplaces. Thanks to their
imagination, Ania Wankiewicz
and her Team created the
Discoverman. Our section showed
that the distance from a concept to
its realization is not so far. The
Superhero starred in a promotional
movie, crossed Lublin’s streets
frequently and appeared at Maria
Curie-Skłodowska University to
promote the idea of the contest.
We already know that it has been
a good strategy, because the
number of photographs sent to us
was above the last year’s norm!
Discover Team succeeded!
Final Gala in the Crown
Court was the culmination of the
regional level of the contest.
Again- congratulations to the
whole team . The Gala was held in
a unique place- the center of the
old town of Lublin. It gave the
event a special character.
At the ceremony appeared
invited guests and many students
who sent their photos for the
contest. Everyone was waiting for
the jury’s verdict. After the speech
about the idea of the contest had
been delivered, the results were
announced. The winners received
attractive prizes. Also those who
were not awarded did not leave
the show disappointed.
All students who visited us took
7
part in an amazing concert of the
NeoKlez band. The young
musicians presented us the new
klezmer music. We had an
opportunity to listen to some new
arrangements of it. The show was
fantastic.
After the concert time for
the photo vernissage came. Apart
from the photos of 9 winners
in 3 categories there were also
photos which caught attention of
the jury. Now there is nothing left
to do but to keep our fingers
crossed for our winners on the
national level of Discover Europe.
The contest showed the students
that they do not have to be
professionals in order to be
noticed. The only condition is to
like photography and not to be
afraid of presenting one’s photos.
This year’s edition of Discover
Europe was a great success of
ESN UMCS’s Discover Team.

A fairytale about ErasBear
in Bialystok
It was not once upon a time,
not beyond the seven rivers,
not beyond the seven mountains,
but beyond a few hills - there was
a bear. Because he was well
known among the Erasmus’
people, everyone called him
ErasBear (in Polish - ErasMiś).
As an every well-bred bear, he
liked everyone and everybody
liked him. ErasMiś loved travelling,
so on one December day,
he arrived at Bialystok - humble,
shy and unsure of meeting with the
European bison. The first few days
were intense - conferences,
photos, friends. The visit began in
the capital of Podlasie with an
interview in the student’s radio
“Akadera”, where he talked about
his dreams, and gave few
autographs. Already then ErasMiś
felt that his visit in Bialystok might
be interesting. Members of the
ESN of the Bialystok University of
Technology welcomed the guest
with the open arms.
There were joint meetings, meals,
entertainments and events.
One day ErasMiś went to the
Faculty of Architecture to support
his colleagues from the ESN in the
exam session period. He had
a glance at the student’s
registration books, helped with
writing the engineering thesis,
prompted during the exams, and
above all, he kept his fingers
crossed. Everyone passed the
session with the highest marks
and passed the thesis defense, so
the bear was very happy and able
to relax and calm his heart.
As a very active person, he could
not sit still, so he willingly
participated in sports with Erasmus
students. It turned out that he is
a very talented goalkeeper in
futsal. He missed only one goal
9
(he saw through the window
a pretty Lady Bear with a glossy,
brown fur, and he likes the
brunettes...).
After pleasures time for
responsibilities came. The General
Assembly was coming up, where
the important decisions were
needed to be taken. The bear, as
a conscientious member of the
section, voted and actively
participated in the discussions.
Everyone listened attentively,
because the bear, as he toured
a lot and saw a lot, knew what’s
what. He was actively involved in
the organization of the Orientation
Week for the new Erasmus
students and took part in it too,
as Bialystok was also new to him.
After taking part in the
informational meeting and the
dinner, the bear also participated
in the Pub Crawl, the Treasure
Hunting, bowling and the trip to
a nearby Suprasl, where he
painted icons, sang songs at the
campfire and took part in the
sleigh ride. He also enjoyed the
parties with the Erasmus students
who really loved him and they
even invited him to the campus for
dinner. The teddy really enjoyed
Bialystok. He visited the baroque
Branicki Palace (that is, the Polish
10
Versailles), the Aleksander
Węgierko Drama Theatre, the
parish church and the Bialystok's
Main Square, the Kosciuszko
Square. There he learned about
the Esperanto language, which
was created by Ludwik Zamenhof,
who came from Bialystok. The
bear took up the new challenge
- learning this international
language, in order to meet even
more people from the different
countries. ErasMiś’s stay in the
capital of Podlasie ended with the
trip to the SD in Olsztyn, where,
as written in his message, he had
fun as well. There’s only one thing
he missed in Bialystok – a meeting
with the European bison. The
bison, however, was very sorry
that he did not meet the teddy.
Therefore he sent to him a special
greeting card with the invitation for
the Żubrowka vodka.
The moral of the tale is as
follows: although it’s difficult to
meet a bison in Bialystok, it’s
worth to come there. The bear
became convinced of it and said
that he would return there once
again some day.

INTERVIEWS
Post-Erasmus depression
Do not think that Erasmus has only pros, that there are no cons and the life
after Erasmus till your old age is beautiful and wonderful! No no no! There are
no words to describe the emptiness I felt after returning home. It wasn't about
lack of parties, events and the continuous atmosphere of fun. It was about
a style of life that was suddenly taken away from me. Smiling, helpful people
on the streets, turned into sad and busy ones, not very nice and malicious at
times (and unfortunately, after returning to Poland I can see that this kind
of behavior has an impact on me as well, gryyy). The climate of Santiago
de Compostela, was only in my heart, and not actually there around me every
time I went out on the streets. Erasmus friends stayed on Facebook
and photos... And in my heart, of course, as well.
12
I applied, delivered my documents, they accepted me, I packed, I flew down
there, and my life has changed. Became better. I always thought that I was
living in happiness and didn't complain about what I had. But I cannot
describe just how great I felt in Santiago. And I just want to add, that this is my
personal feeling, not everyone is happy with his/her Erasmus (I do not
understand how someone can be dissatisfied with Erasmus – but these kinds
of students do exist). I changed my attitude to everything, from a positive to
a superpositive one. I learned to notice beauty in everything. I learned three
new foreign languages. I got to know other cultures. I began to listen to new
types of music. I opened up myself for various forms of art and culture.
I've changed. For the better.
And suddenly… I had to go back. All of a sudden. I knew, that one day
I will have to go back home, but when that time come, it was a big mistery.
Everyone was asking me: "how was it?" And there was just one thought in my
head… “It was better than here, and how is it possible to describe the greatest
year of my life in a few hours?” And the only thing coming through my mouth
was: “Cool, that was a cool year!”.
What's more, paperwork, problems with the documents, as usual.
That emptiness around me… However, thanks to my Polish friends,
somehow, I've managed to overcome all this, and... hmm... In Poland I've
decided to maintain contact with the Erasmus students, so I googled
"Erasmus Gdańsk" and...
ESN appeared! And here I am! With the ESN, there is no time for grief, sorrow
and perplexity (here there is no time for anything at all :P). I met new friends,
I started new studies, I live in a new city and my life, as usual, is full of
intensity and cannot be focused on my Post-Erasmus depression. All that is
left for me to do is to promote Erasmus in every way I can for all of those who
still have the possibility to go, so... JUST GO!!!! It's worth it!

Mission, Vision, Values ESN
The values represented are:
unity in diversity, diversity in the unity;
students helping students;
fun in friendship and respect;
international dimension of the life;
love for Europe as an area of peace and cultural exchange;
openness with tolerance;
cooperation in the integration.
www.esn.org
The ESN Star, which is a logo of ESN itself, represents the ESN Members
standing (but also dancing) in a circle, as they were holding each other’s
hands, supporting and helping each other. They are different (four colours,
and length) but unite and united they stand, in cooperation, which literally
means “operating in concert”.
29
The eight branches of the star, that represent also the Sections of the
Network, do not have a centre, but rotate together and are partially
overlapping: in such overlapping areas, their identity, what they are
(the colours) merge, similarly to what happens when integration takes places
in friendship and respect.
The word I*ESN evidently keeps the acronym of our name, in cyan, while
connecting it to a capital “I” (in different and stronger colour) which stands
both for “International” and, in a bizarre and obvious way, also for the first
person singular (I = me, I= International).
To connect the I (both as International and as a subject) with ESN is the star:
by playing with the double meaning of the acronym I*ESN, hence, the star
becomes a symbol of the exchange itself, that brings into relation the network,
ESN, with the individual (“I”) and the International aspect of the life.
In the explanatory text “International Exchange Erasmus Student Network”,
it includes all what the network is in a synthetic way: while keeping the official
name of the network in one line and in one colour (“Erasmus Student
Network”), it is claimed also the support ESN brings to the International
Exchange Students that throughout Europe are studying not with the Erasmus
Programme.
“Exchange”, finally, recalls the colours of the stars and assumes the role of
explanation.
