Peace,
Bill Eddins, Music Director
I’m proud to welcome you to another amazing line-
up of guest artists and incredible music in our new
season of concerts. And this year, we’re celebrating
the 15th anniversary of our performance home, the
Francis Winspear Centre for Music.
My friend Bill Dimmer - Assistant Principal
Trumpet of the ESO - likes to say that the hall
is the 57th member of the orchestra. There’s no
doubt the incredible acoustics of our hall have
made us a better orchestra. We’re so grateful
for the visionary hard work and dedication of so
many community volunteers and supporters who
created one of the greatest performance spaces
in the world. We love our home and invite you to
experience the ESO at the Winspear Centre this
year.

Your ESO is a community-supported organization that relies on your donation to help perform at its best. The cost of providing concerts is not covered by ticket sales alone. You deserve to experience the exquisite joy of hearing a brilliant piece of music; the power of live performance; and best of all, the unforgettable atmosphere of an ESO concert. Join our Friends of Music by donating $100 (only $8.33 per month) or more to your ESO today!
How can I donate to the ESO?
Make a donation today, or pledge to ongoing giving with a Sustaining Pledge. Visit EdmontonSymphony.com/Support or call Erin Mulcair at 780-401-2539. You can sign up for a set monthly donation through credit card or authorized direct withdrawal.
What will my donation do for the ESO?
Your gift will help cover some of our costs of producing over 85 live performances every year:
• $500 will tune the piano for our rehearsals and performances with pianist Katherine Chi on October 12th and 13th, 2012.
• $1,200 will operate special lighting for a Symphony for Kids rehearsal and performance.
• $2,500 will make the Winspear Centre warm, clean, welcoming and safe for our patrons at one event.
• $5,000 will cover sheet music rental costs for the ESO’s ‘From Stage to Screen’ Robbins Pops performances in September 2012.
• $14,000 will present an education program to 1,700 Grade 4-6 students as part of the ESO’s education and outreach activities.
Every gift made to the ESO is sincerely appreciated and truly makes a difference. Please donate today! You will receive a tax receipt for every gift of $20 or more.
My Winspear
My Winspear creates a community-wide sustainable funding source for our spectacular hall and to help provide opportunities for music, dance, and other community groups to make the Winspear Centre their performance or event home. With the generous support of monthly donors, My Winspear raised over $44,000 for the Winspear Centre last year!
My Winspear donors directly contribute to the artistic life of our community and make this outstanding building accessible
and affordable for everyone. Because of My Winspear donors, the Winspear Centre has reduced or waived rental charges of over $65,575 for over 200 community groups in one year of events.
Join My Winspear for as little as $10 a month by calling Erin Mulcair at 780-401-2539 or visit us online at WinspearCentre.com/Support and help provide outstanding musical experiences for our community. As a thank you for joining My Winspear, you can select a custom t-shirt so you can tell the world what the Winspear Centre means to you!
The Legacy Circle: A Lasting Partnership

31Education Concerts
Each season, the ESO presents weekday education concerts for nearly 25,000 children between Kindergarten and Grade 12 from Edmonton and surrounding areas. These educational programs, aligned with Alberta curriculum, offer unique, varied and interactive learning opportunities about music for students of all ages. Teachers receive study guides in advance to prepare their classes and stimulate discussion about orchestra instruments, composers, rhythm patterns and more!
Upbeat!
Schools with modest budgets can apply for grants through Upbeat! to help cover the costs of attending ESO Education concerts. With support from a generous donor, we may be able to provide classrooms with complimentary tickets and transportation.
For more information about these programs, visit EdmontonSymphony.com/Education, or email to [email protected].
Musicians in the Making
Ready to reveal your talent and gain that all-important experience of performing before live audiences? We’re looking for student soloists and small ensembles to perform half-hour showcases in the Winspear Centre lobby prior to selected ESO performances. Participants are then invited to a complimentary concert. Musicians also have the opportunity to perform at the Edmonton International Airport.
Young Composers Project
The ESO invites high school students passionate about composing to apply for the rare opportunity to receive compositional mentorship with the ESO’s Composer in Residence, Robert Rival. One student will receive a $1,000 bursary towards post-secondary studies, compose a new work and hear it performed by the ESO for more than 2,000 patrons at Symphony Under the Sky.
Musicians in the Classroom
Schools across Edmonton and surrounding areas have the unique opportunity to have ESO musicians in their classroom. Our Adopt-A-Player program sees ten classrooms work with a musician to create an original piece of music that is performed by the students at the Winspear Centre for their family and friends.

ESO EDUCATION
From elementary Education Concerts to junior and senior high school programs, we want to give all students the chance to experience the ESO Live at the Winspear Centre.
“I feel blessed. Where else would a 17-year old high school kid who comes from a non-musical family get to compose a piece on his piano one summer day, and a year later have it performed by an entire professional orchestra in front of a sold-out crowd?”
- Sean Doherty, YCP Recipient 2010
Our Performance HomeThe Francis Winspear Centre for Music is a world-class venue, rehearsal, library and administration space for the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. This hub of creativity also serves as a venue of choice for many private and corporate functions, local community groups, arts organizations and travelling performers. We are proud to celebrate its 15th anniversary this year of the Francis Winspear Centre for Music.
The jewel of the Winspear Centre is the Davis Concert Organ, the largest concert organ in Canada. We celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Davis Concert Organ in our 2012-2013 ESO Season with special performances featuring this stunning instrument.
ESO Musicians in the CommunityMany ESO musicians teach private lessons and as part of music programs at the University of Alberta, Grant MacEwan University, Alberta College and other institutions. They are also involved with many local ensembles, from Alberta Baroque Ensemble to jazz trios. The impact on the musical vibrancy of a community by having a professional symphony orchestra is immeasurable!
Giving BackThe musicians and staff of the ESO & Winspear Centre are personally and corporately concerned with many social causes and support other charitable groups serving our community. Edmonton’s Food Bank, Kids Up Front, Ronald McDonald House, and the Christmas Bureau are just a few of the charities that directly benefit from the ESO and Winspear Centre each year.
COMMUNITYGovernment InvestmentThe ESO would like to thank the following government agencies for their investment in live symphonic music in Edmonton.
