Resumen del PRETÉRITO: did
A. Regular preterite endings
-ar -er-/ir
é amos í imos
aste asteis iste isteis
ó aron ió ieron
B. Spell-changing verbs in the preterite
In the preterite, verbs that end in -car, -gar, and -zar have a slight change in the spelling of the yo form in
order to maintain the sound of the consonant in the infinitive:
Buscar Jugar Almorzar
busqué buscamos jugué jugamos almorcé almorzamos
buscaste buscasteis jugaste jugasteis almorzaste almorzasteis
buscó buscaron jugó jugaron almorzó almorzaron
This affects all -car, -gar, and -zar verbs, including pagar, marcar, lanzar, empezar, comenzar, gozar,
llegar, etc.
C. Stem-changing verbs in the preterite In the preterite, stem-changing verbs affect just the 3
rd person (aka they form a sandal, not a boot!).
There are two kinds of changes (ei and ou).
Any verb that a) has a present-tense stem-change and b) ends in –ir will also have a stem-change in the
preterite. Verbs that end in –ar or –er don’t change.
Here are some common stem-changing verbs:
Pedir: to ask for, order ei
Dormir: to sleep ou
pedí pedimos dormí dormimos
pediste pedisteis dormiste dormisteis
pidió pidieron durmió durmieron
preferir: prefer
repetir: repeat
servir: serve
seguir: follow, continue
conseguir: get, obtain
morir: die
5
D. Verbs that have a different meaning in the preterite
A few verbs have a slightly different meaning in the preterite since the preterite is used to state an action
that had clear beginning and end rather than being ongoing or repeated. If you want to express the
verb’s regular present tense meaning, then be sure to use the imperfect.
Verb Meaning in the present Meaning in the preterite
saber to know to find out
conocer to know (person) to meet (for the first time)
poder to be able
poder: managed to no poder: failed to
querer to want, love

preterite verbs lack accents.

Resumen del SUBJUNTIVO
There are four tenses of the subjunctive and six uses. The subjunctive can have several
translations depending on context, so translating without context is not advised.
A. El presente del subjuntivo
Regular verbs in the present subjunctive are conjugating following a three-step process:
1. Start with the yo form in the present tense (hablo, digo, hago, conozco, veo, etc.)
2. Take off the -o
3. Add the ending. Note that these endings have the “opposite” vowel:
-ar -er/-ir
e emos a amos
es éis as áis
e en a an
Irregular verbs in the present subjunctive are those that don’t have a yo-form that ends in –o and
therefore can’t follow the three-step process:
Ser Ir Saber
sea seamos vaya vayamos sepa sepamos
seas seáis vayas vayáis sepas sepáis
sea sean vaya vayan sepa sepan
Dar Estar Haber
dé demos esté estemos haya hayamos
des deis estés estéis hayas hayáis
dé den esté estén haya hayan
Stem-changing verbs that end in -ar or -er form a boot pattern:
Pensar Poder Querer
piense pensemos pueda podamos quiera queramos
pienses penséis puedas podáis quieras queráis
piense piensen pueda puedan quiera quieran
11
Stem-changing verbs that end in -ir have an additional change in the nosotros and vosotros forms:
eie: Preferir oue: Dormir ei: Pedir
prefiera prefiramos duerma durmamos pida pidamos
prefieras prefiráis duermas durmáis pidas pidáis
prefiera prefieran duerma duerman pida pidan
Verbs with certain endings must undergo spelling changes in order to maintain their sounds:
-ar -er/-ir
-car cqu -ger/-gir gj
-gar ggu -guir gug
-zar zc -cer/-cir cz
B. El presente perfecto del subjuntivo
Haber en el presente del subj.
+ el participio haya hayamos
hayas hayáis

C. El imperfecto del subjuntivo
The imperfect subjunctive is conjugated following a three-step process:

durmieron, etc.)
2. Take off the -ron
3. Add the ending:
-ar, -er, -ir
ra ramos ras rais
ra ran
D. El pluscuamperfecto del subjuntivo (pasado perfecto del subjuntivo)
Haber en el imperfecto del subj.
+ el participio hubiera hubiéramos
