ESRI Top Ten Improvements in 10.1
by Matt Ball on July 11, 2011
Next meeting will be
Thursday, September 8th
@ 3 pm. Location TBD
Top 10 Desktop Enhancements
10. Searching has great improvement, with search for the right projection easier, spatial filtering to search within map extent, and spatial keyword support
9. Editor tracking allows for editor information updated by the application with the geodatabase to be accessed across all devices
8. Geo-tagged photos to automatically create points from folders of photos
7. GPX to features tool allows for quick loading of GPS waypoints, tracks and routes
6. KML to Layers supports symbols and pop-up imports
5. Two new generalization tools in cartography to collapse and build up road areas, allowing for simplification at different scales, automating what was once manual
4. New interface for administering geodatabases that allows viewing and managing the locks on the geodatabase
3. Labeling improvements with key numbering that reference numeric values on the map, placing more descriptive text on the map automatically
2. Dynamic legends that change at different scales
1. The new Share As menu allows for easy sharing of maps and packages
Top 10 ArcGIS Server Improvements
10. Improvements on how you work with global data, with continual panning of data across the globe, working with any basemap on ArcGIS Online, but also with your own data.
9. A new Silverlight Viewer allows for the quick building of a map, adding layers from your own server, and for adding tools to edit, add geoprocessing tasks, and share the map.
8. 64-bit native architecture
7. New architecture that is pier to pier and much simpler
6. Easier to install and configure
5. More IT friendly without dependencies that were a trouble spot before, adding better access to databases.
4. Can now use live or historical traffic data to enhance your spatial analysis
3. Map services are enhanced to handle thousands of layers for dynamic layers to define what layers are drawn and how, including control of symbology.
2. High-quality print service to create maps from web and mobile applications.
1. Performance enhancements are first, because this is what all servers are about. Enhancements greatly improve the querying for on-the-fly analysis.

Paris High School hosted a career day
May 5, 2011 that included various
vendors and companies.
Tina Thompson and Michelle Mizell
were invited as guest speakers and set-
up a booth representing the River
Valley GIS Users Group. They were very
excited to see many of the teens are
interested in GIS. The students had
many questions about what GIS is and
what can be accomplished with it.
Not only did Tina & Michelle enjoy
sharing with the students about GIS
but also grabbed some really neat
ideas for GIS Day.

Geography has long been
recognized as a “core
academic subject” in federal
education legislation.
However, unlike all the other
core academic subjects,
including history, civics,
economics, foreign
languages and the arts,
there is no dedicated federal
funding stream to advance
geography education. As a
result, our nation is facing a
crisis in geographic literacy
that is jeopardizing our
global competitiveness, our
position of diplomatic
leadership, and our ability to
fill and retain over 150,000
jobs in geospatial technology
in the next decade.
The Teaching Geography Is
Fundamental Act (TGIF) is
federal legislation which
would authorize grants to
universities and nonprofit
organizations for programs
to expand geographic
literacy among American
students and improve the
teaching of geography at the
K-12 level.
TGIF authorizes $15 million
per year for five years.1

“Fear No Career” day at Paris, Arkansas High School
Our group president, Tina Thompson, attended the 2011 ESRI International User Conference July 11-15 in San Diego, CA. After a week packed full of Seminars, plenary sessions, workshops, fairs, summits and meetings ESRI treated the attendees with an exclusive celebration in San Diego’s iconic Balboa Park. The attendees were able to enjoy live music, performances, world-class exhibits and cuisine from around the world. Tina chose the Prado Restaurant which offered traditional Spanish cuisine which offered her a once in a lifetime opportunity….. She not only did she get to take photos of Jack Dangermond, president of ESRI, but she was also able to have her photo taken with Jack since Spanish cuisine was also his choice for the evening. http://www.esri.com/events/user-conference/agenda/night-at-the-park.html
