Manufactured from high carbon steel in eleven different shapes. Durable and long lasting, these cutters are precision ground to an optimum angle providing effortless lino cuttingThe Box Sets include our precision cutters and sturdy handles, complete with an aluminium collar which allows the cutters to be securely fitted and tightened with ease.
No. 1 Cutter For fine lines and cross hatching. Use at a steep angle and push forward with light pressure being sure not to go deep. Never try to plunge any cutter deeper than the ground sides of the point. With practice, a line of 0.5mm (0.020”) or less is possible in SoftCut material and a little wider in Lino. Care is needed when inking up over lines this fine as it is easy to push the ink into shallow lines with a soft brayer (lino roller).
No. 2 Cutter A universal and easy to use tool with a low angle of attack. Commonly used as a basic first time tool to cut lines up to 1.5mm (0.060”) or less.
No. 3 Cutter A tight, round cutter able to cut a 2mm deep sided line where needed. Great in straight lines, but more difficult to turn. Great in SoftCut but cut too deep in lino and the upright walls of the cut can leave little support and weaken the top surface. With practice, it’s useful for cutting small circles by using a swivel motion.
No. 4 Cutter A wide, rounded bottom “vee” cutter for lines 3mm wide with 45˚ walls for strength of print surface particularly important for fragile detail and unsupported straight lines such as a narrow tree branch with large open spaces each side in lino. A fast remover of material.
No. 5 Cutter A thin line marking tool for making the first lines to define the design before using other cutters to remove the unwanted background. It can be pushed or dragged across the surface and turned very easily to describe curves and wavy lines. Cut deep into the lino or SoftCut to define the limit of material removal particularly useful with SoftCut as the material can cling at the end of a cut.
No. 6 Cutter A flat radius cutter for shallow, wide cuts or for shaving at a side wall to reduce the printed area and leave a strong shallow angle. A clever trick is to use this cutter vertically spun between the fingers to cut a 4mm circle in softcut (or less with practice) which is useful for the centre of eyes, with either the centre part left to print or the centre removed.
No. 7 Cutter A flat bottomed wide cutter with safety edges each side. Use the unground sides to prevent shaving the edge of a previously cut line and to remove a 3mm (0.120”) wide flat trough or tidy up unwanted cut lines in the design background.
No. 8 Cutter A wide and deep cutter able to cut up to 6mm wide. Care is needed not to go too deep but a favourite tool of the experienced lino cutter for bold pieces of work.
No. 9 Cutter A deep “vee” cutter for narrow lines gives good results in lino but care needed not to go too deep, has a very easy action in tougher materials.
No. 10 Cutter Same as number nine but with a wider “vee” shape and a more rounded base to produce lines up to 3.5mm wide. As a number nine cutter, a very easy action.
No. 12 Cutter Made to the same exacting standards as our normal cutters, this is a new concept in lino cutting. The specially designed ‘wings’ allow safe cutting to an exact depth, providing a consistent, clean-cut line every time. Perfect for the younger or inexperienced user.

Fine Quality Scraperboard is heavily coated with china clay, giving a smooth surface which is then over-printed with black ink. A sharp scraper tool engraves a line through the surface ink to expose the white beneath. It offers an artistic medium which is clear and precise.
Used by illustrators and professional artists around the world, its super-smooth surface lets you to work in extremely fine detail. It can also be used as an ideal airbrush medium.
Engraving is as easy as drawing with a pencil, and with much the same action. The board provides an extreme level of contrast not possible with other media. Scraperboard can be subsequently coloured and reworked to provide many interesting possibilities.
Commercial artists value it for the sparkle it can give to the most mundane subjects, it guarantees perfect reproduction on the poorest of papers.
Using Fine Quality Scraperboard Finalise a design on a sketchpad before any engraving is started. Then fix the Scraperboard to a rigid surface.
Transfer your design Make a basic copy in pencil of your design on a piece of tracing paper. Cover the reverse of the tracing with chalk. Fix the tracing to the board and use a ball-point pen to transfer the design onto the Scraperboard, figure 1.
Use a clean piece of paper between the hand and the Scraperboard as you work.
Half-Tone EffectsThe samples, figure 2, show a few of the effects it is possible to obtain with Scraperboard. All these were done free-hand, though a steel or plastic ruler can be used.

Working with White Fine Quality ScraperboardWhite Scraperboard is also available upon which the user applies ink to selected areas. This eliminates excessive removal of large black areas. The working process is identical to that for black Scraperboard.
Use good quality waterproof ink and a sable brush to ‘block-in’ the main areas of the design and leave to dry naturally.
The use of a clean piece of paper under the hand to prevent accidental marking is even more important when using white Scraperboard.
It is possible using white Scraperboard to carefully build up an illustration with semi-transparent inks and then add detailed engraving.
White Scraperboard is the best medium for airbrushing and is perfect for creating dramatic illustrative effects.
Adding colour to Scraperboard Select your subject carefully
The engraved white lines must all be emphasised in a positive way if you intend adding colour to your design. Large areas of white will give a brilliant effect when finally coloured, so it is important to leave plenty of black around these areas.
Use diluted inks in successive coats rather than one application direct and undiluted from the bottle.
Mixing colours layer upon layer can take place on your design. It is important to keep the Scraperboard as dry as possible. Do not allow the board to become saturated with water.
Watercolour Paper Stretcher The easy way to stretch and dry watercolour paper prior to painting. No need for taping and cutting. Simply place your wet paper onto the special water-proof board and apply the clamps. When dry your paper is ready for painting. Remove the clamps and your painting is ready to frame.
