Cover Storyour canine cover stars are martha (oregonian raise a Laugh) and rufus (oregonian raise an Eyebrow), who are just coming up to two years old. They are already championship show winning dogs and we can see why!

They belong to Sarah Taylor of Littlehampton who only breeds to show. her family has owned Pembroke Welsh Corgis since 1963 and bred the first litter in 1975. Sarah has had a distinguished career as a breeder of champions and also acted as a judge all over the world, including Crufts.

Fittingly, since the corgis are adorning our Jubilee issue, Sarah has met the Queen and her corgis too.

Looking after four venues is a challenge, but twelve years on, it is still an exciting and rewarding one.

I’m responsible for all the technical aspects of the theatres, which range from dressing the stage to organising light and sound, setting scenes and ensuring smooth transitions between them. often, larger touring companies bring their own equipment and I have to work with them to make sure that our venues are compatible with their requirements.

And I am not only involved with live shows. We also have fantastic films, too. The digital cinema work, especially transmitting live performances via satellite, is amazing. The quality is so high that it rivals that of the original. Certainly, no one needs opera glasses to get a good view of the performance!

A typical day? I couldn’t really say that I have one, since no two are ever the same. I could describe a perfect day though. It starts early, around 7.30am, with the arrival of an articulated lorry at the Connaught containing the equipment for a new show. We unload quickly and the stage is then covered with the required flooring; the scenery is set; lights positioned with cues; the music made ready and the props arranged. All we need now are the actors to bring it all to life when the curtain goes up.

Exhausting? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely! hearing the people laugh and clap at a show is what it’s all about. my team and I are there to make sure that everyone enjoys themselves and that everything goes to plan. When we achieve that, we know that we’ve done our job well.

Some people think that with all the distractions of other media that live performances will not be able to compete. but, there is a real magic to a shared experience and I have no doubt that there will always be a place in the world for theatre.

The beach at goring, commonly known as goring gap – where the green open countryside actually runs down and meets the coast – is undoubtedly one of the most popular stretches of coastline in West Sussex. Lying two miles west of Worthing town centre, goring gap encompasses the long stretch of unspoilt beach between goring and Ferring.

unlike other south coast resorts, goring-by-Sea has resisted installing amusement arcades and candy-floss stalls and remains very clean and well-kept. Fishing, windsurfing, surf boarding, kite surfing and a host of other watersports are popular here, as well as horse riding on the mixed pebble and sand beach. It is a dog-walker’s delight!

Situated in the middle of this long stretch of blue Flag beach at goring is the Sea Lane Café. It is easy to spot from both the coast road and the promenade because it flies a large Union Flag. Come rain or shine, summer or winter, morning or afternoon - it doesn’t matter wnen you come – you will always find this café busy!

Peter Attwood, who owns the café with business partner gavin Trimmer, told me he has been associated with Sea Lane Café for 35 years. As a youngster, he used to work there during the holidays and at weekends, then took up full-time employment, working his way up to becoming manager. Seven years ago, he went into partnership with gavin and bought the business.

Since then, they have refurbished the building and doubled the seating, enabling them to accommodate 80 inside and 150 outside. The café is accessed by steps, giving it both advantages and disadvantages.

You do get a wonderful view of the beach and sea from inside. however, if you are unable to climb steps, you need to come prepared to sit outside and be accompanied by someone who could order and pay for your food and drink at the counter upstairs. on the plus side, there are Council-run, disabled loos on ground level, underneath the café.

Sea Lane Café is open all year round from 8.30am. In the winter months it closes at 4.30pm, but in the high summer it stays open until 7pm (or longer if the weather is nice!)

Cooked breakfasts are one of the specialities of this café, served until 11.30am. In the winter, home-made soups, curries or steak & kidney puddings are on the menu. Salads of seafood, locally caught crab, smoked salmon and king prawns are available in the summer. And if you fancy a tipple with your meal, being fully licensed, they offer a selection of wines, beers and even champagne.

Peter told me they were famous for their wide selection of fresh cakes, gateaux and home-made scones. Scones have no sugary icing to hide behind – they stand or fall on their absolute

freshness – which is why they should be eaten straight from the oven. And even then, they can be disappointing (as I have discovered with several cream teas in so-called ‘posh’ tearooms!)

Nonetheless, as I am rather partial to a home-made scone, I decided to sample one here. There was a choice of cheese, plain fruit or wholemeal. I chose wholemeal. I must admit, I was expecting it to be a bit heavy and wondered why I hadn’t chosen a fresh cream cake instead. That is, until I tasted it! beautifully crisp and crunchy on the outside and light and fluffy inside, it was just the best I have ever tasted. With the addition of butter and jam, it was simply delicious. And the coffee was equally good. So, why go to Somerset for a Cream Tea? You won’t get anything better than at the Sea Lane Café. And the other home-made cakes looked equally ‘yummy’.

In addition, there is a takeaway shop selling tea, coffee, cold drinks, ice creams (including 99s), burgers, chips, hot dogs and beach goods – ideal if you are on the beach for the day. They take all major credit and debit cards over £10 (except American Express).

In a very modest way, Peter described his café as ‘not too up-market with reasonable prices’. his parting words were, ‘I just want to serve people.’ With that attitude, he certainly deserves the success he is having.

The South East of England is the driest and most densely populated area in the uk.

The amount of water we use each day has risen dramatically. Long-er life expectancy and a growing interest in gardening have also led to an increase in demand for water, especially during the summer months.

We use about 10 litres more water a day now than a decade ago, as we take more showers and baths, and use more and more modern appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers.

The growing population and effects of climate change are putting pressure on water resources in the South East which are already under stress. Although the rain in April and may helped, it followed the sec-ond driest 12 month period on record which sounded drought alarms.

Southern Water is playing its part to help meet the growing pressure on water resources. Last year it built an award-winning £12 million reservoir near Hardham in North Sussex – the first of its type to be built by the company for 30 years. This provides enough water to meet the needs of 70,000 people or 30,000 properties which is the predicted new homes growth in that area for the next 25 years.

It is also the first water company in the UK to provide nearly every home with a water meter in a widespread five-year programme which began in 2010 and comes to Worthing this year. People tend to cut their water consumption by ten per cent when having a meter installed. And the meters being installed are world-leading models with an automatic leak-detection facility which is expected to save up to five million litres of water per day. That’s enough water to meet the needs of 33,000 people.

Southern Water also has the lowest leakage level per household of all the water and sewerage companies in the uk, and it operates an extensive programme to replace 256km of water mains before 2015 which will reduce the risk of burst pipes and leaks.

Its customers have always worked closely with the company to help conserve supplies, saving a remarkable 43 million litres of water during the summer of 2006 when the region was last in drought. This year the company is again asking us to adopt some simple water efficiency advice to help save supplies:

prefer rainwater and using a water butt also means less water is taken from rivers for drinking water which helps to protect the environment.

• The use of hosepipes and sprin-klers is banned (with certain exceptions) across the Worthing area. These can use as much water in an hour as a family of four does in one day. Please water your garden by using a watering can filled from a tap or, better still, a water butt.

• Lawns may go brown if the weather is dry but they quickly recover when it rains and don’t need to be watered in between. Cut the grass slightly longer in dry periods and less frequently, leaving the cuttings on to retain moisture.

• Apply a thick layer of mulch, compost or chip bark on your soil between plants to help keep the moisture in and sup-press weeds.

• Water plants in the early morning or evening when it is cooler and less water is lost to evaporation.

• Use a water-retaining gel for pots and hanging baskets.

• Select plants which need minimal watering.

• Use a bucket and sponge to wash the car, not a water-wasting hose.

In the bathroom:• Flushing the toilet accounts for

about 30 per cent of all the wa-ter we use in our homes. If you do not have a low-flush toilet, please put a Save-a-flush bag in the cistern to save a litre of water per flush.

• Take a four-minute shower in-stead of a bath and save about 50 litres of water.

• Turn off the tap when brush-ing your teeth and rinse at the end with a mug of water - a family of four can save a bathful of water every day by following this example.

In the kitchen:• When washing vegetables

or rinsing plates, please don’t use a running tap. Put a plug in your sink or use a bowl. Soaking vegetables makes them easier to peel and a running tap wastes nine litres of water a minute.

• Only use your washing ma-chine and dishwasher with a full load. one less weekly wash saves up to 5,000 litres of water annually – more than enough for one per-son’s monthly needs.

• Place a jug of water in the fridge for a ready supply of chilled water, rather than running the tap until it runs cold.

• Boil only as much water as you need for a cup of tea or coffee but make sure the ele-ment in the kettle is covered.

• Fixing aerators to taps cuts the water they use by about half. These introduce air in the water. The water flow looks the same and feels the same but you use much less water.

Around the house:• Always fix dripping taps

and leaking overflows. many dripping taps can be cheaply repaired by replac-ing tap washers. A dripping tap can waste five litres of water a day.

• Please lag pipes and tanks in the loft to prevent them freez-ing and bursting.

• Always turn off the water if you’re going away, particularly if you’re turning off the central heating too.

Make sure you know where your main stop valve is and make sure that you can turn it on and off. If ever a pipe bursts, you’ll then know how to cut off the flow.

A chance to see hidden back gardens in Worthing

The perfect gift for Fathers Day

Acclaimed by the national press, Tv and radio, the hidden back gardens of Ambrose Place, Worthing have opened to the public since 1984.

This year for the 29th consecutive year, the residents of Ambrose Place, a grade II Listed regency Terrace in Central Worthing, open their gardens for Charity as part of the National gardens Scheme. All monies raised by the NgS go to charity, the main beneficiaries being MacMillan Nurses and Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Entrance to the Ambrose Secret back gardens is in richmond Road (opposite the Public Library) and entry costs £5 per person. Afternoon tea and homemade cake are available for an extra £2 (by prepaid ticket) in the Tabernacle Church’s “Way-in Café” (opposite the Town hall).

All gardens are maintained by their amateur garden owners, so they appeal to the average town gardener looking for ideas, as well as to those simply after an enjoyable day out. Some of the owners offer home grown plants for sale at very reasonable prices – always a popular feature with visitors.

So from 11am till 1pm and 2pm till 5pm on Sunday 24 June, Ambrose Place hidden back gardens will welcome all who have an interest in gardening.

What you will need: • An old paperback book• One or two metres of ribbon • Glue or thread in a contrast colour to your ribbon• A ruler, pencil and scissors• Stickers, coloured pens or other decorations

How to make your bunting:• Take your paperback and remove

the cover. (make sure mum has read it first!)

• Peel away about four pages• Measure the bottom (short side of

the page) and mark the centre with a pencil

• Using your ruler, draw a line from the top left-hand side of the page down to the centre point and then the same from the top right-hand side.

• You now have a pointed triangle. Cut this out carefully keeping the pages together. (You could use a paperclip here to help or cut them individually, but it will take more time.)

• Repeat until you have enough flags to fill most of your ribbon.

• Leave about 15cm of the ribbon free at either end for tying and then stick or sew your flags onto the ribbon.

• Decorate with stamps, stickers or pictures or just leave plain.

• Use picture books, magazines or pretty papers to make bunting for all your special days.

We certainly have been experiencing some pretty diverse weather conditions over the past few weeks, so we are really looking forward to some warmer days and to be able to roll out those fabulous summer dishes with inspiring wines to match.once again I have been able to source something different from our local independent wine merchants with the weather in mind.down in grapes of Worthing, I found this intriguing white wine from Chile - ELKI Pedro Ximenez, 2010. Elqui valley is located in the do Coquimbo region of Chile 300 miles north of Santiago. It is Chile’s most northern wine

producing region, warm and very mountainous. many vineyards here are located high in the Andes mountains, some as high as 6,500 feet above sea level. The altitude has a moderating influence on the climate allowing the grapes to receive more intense sunlight during the day. This diurnal temperature variation allows the grapes to retain a high level of acidity while ripening fully, important for a grape with low natural acidity like PX.The grapes for this wine are handpicked, pressed softly and

fermented at low temperatures - resulting in white peach and apricot notes. Chill this wine right down. It’s great as an aperitif, nice with seafood, salads, cheese and tasty cold rice dishes. So, for the twist in the summer wine selection, I found a beaujolais by Loron & Fils that fits the bill. This red wine can be chilled down and enjoyed with salmon or tuna fish, fresh salads and pasta dishes and, of course, with creamy cheeses. Brouilly Les Thibaults 2010, made from the gamay grape, is from the foothills of its volcanic namesake mont brouilly and is the largest of the cru appellations. The soil here ranges from pink granite to chalky clay and sand.This wine is a real head-turner, soft summer pudding on the nose, attractive ruby colour complemented by a full, rich palate with elegant, soft tannins. I just loved this wine. Enjoy!

Party season kicks off in JuneThe Diamond Jubilee, Worthing carnival and Wimbledon will be celebrated in style by the residents at The Shelley

Well, it’s summer again and after that long wait, let’s not complain about the heat but let’s relish in the sunshine and all that it brings.

For our residents we’ve always ensured a packed season of activities, however, this year is different.

We will be celebrating June with not only with a glass of Pimms enjoying Wimbledon but a party, or should I say parties, to celebrate our magnificent Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Not content with what will be our unrivalled celebrations at The Shelley (garden party and various entertainments) we have entered into the spirit of things by joining in the huge carnival on Worthing promenade on the 16th of June. This promises to be a stupendous event with a ‘street ‘ or should I say ‘promenade’ party to line the seafront from one end to the other.

We’ve booked our tables, planned our strategy and look forward to standing more than a chance of winning the ‘best dressed table competition’.

our residents will be involved in decorating, baking (or eating) and generally making the event into a celebration to remember. (That reminds me, where do you get Corgis?)

So, feel free to come pay us a visit and join us for a cup of tea and delicious cakes.

After all is done, there is no time to relax, it’s straight onto the olympics and cheering our teams on to glory.

Our resident Dr talks tough this month on how abuse affects our young community and the tragic outcomes

The mark of a civilised society is said to be how well it protects its most vulnerable members. The recent desperate suffering of the young girls exploited by a paedophile gang shows there is still much work to do.

I sat once with one of our ex-regulars- I say ‘ex’ as I haven’t seen him for ages, and therefore presume that he is either in prison or dead. he had a psychiatric and forensic history as long as your arm and was a frequent visitor to A&E- usually with a police escort- for recurrent overdoses, self-harm and lots and lots of affray.

on the face of it he was an angry man who had done some very bad things. he drank too much and had an easy temper. This is his story that he told me…

The alcoholic father, the domestic abuse, the fear of a small boy, crouching under the table, knowing that once his mother had been beaten unconscious, his father would come looking for him...It’s not an excuse for a lifetime of poor choices, violence and crime but it is an explanation. he had no other blue-print. his early experiences had wired up his brain all wrong. This young boy wasn’t given enough love to become a man....’If a child is given love, he becomes loving. If he is helped when he needs help, he becomes helpful. And if he has been truly valued at home he grows up secure

Varicose veins are very common affecting around 30% of adults. They develop when the small valves inside the veins stop working properly. Normally the valves open to let blood through then close again to stop it flowing back, however, if they become weak or damaged the blood can flow backwards, collecting in the vein causing that telltale bulging.

You’re more likely to develop varicose veins as you get older, especially if they run in your family. In addition, many women develop varicose veins during pregnancy; although pregnancy itself isn’t the cause.

The good news is that despite sometimes being unsightly, varicose veins don’t usually cause problems. The not so good news is that if they’re not causing problems you probably won’t get them treated on the NHS. Nonetheless, you should see your GP if you your veins are itchy, painful or achy or the skin over the vein is discoloured or inflamed and also if you want treatment for aesthetic reasons.

Your GP may refer you to a consultant at a local Nuffield hospital where every patient should have a duplex ultrasound scan, which provides detailed images of your veins to allow the vascular consultant to advise on the most appropriate treatment for you. There are several safe and effective techniques. From the traditional surgical treatment called ligation & stripping and avulsions that requires a general anaesthetic, through to newer, less invasive techniques such as radiofrequency abla-tion, which usually only require a local anaesthetic.

However, these newer techniques are not appropriate in all cases. Clinical examination and duplex ultrasound imaging will allow the consultant vas-cular surgeon to make the best choice of treatments for your varicose veins.
