Printer load balancing means printing across multiple printers. It’s also known as “printer pooling.”

In busy printing environments, several jobs may be sent to the printer in a short period of time. When this happens the documents get stacked up and have to wait their turn before printing. Printer load balancing solves this problem.

Any system depending on multiple devices requires a program to manage it.

The OM Plus Software Suite handles both print spooling and printer load balancing with ease.

How OM Plus Printer Load Balancing Works

Printers in the system are set into groups called “printer classes.” OM Plus allows users to define different printer classes and assign printers to them.

In OM Plus uses its print spooling protocols to distribute the documents to all printers within the class.

OM Plus uses bi-directional communication to “talk” to all printer classes. If a printer is busy or has a problem OM Plus will direct waiting jobs to the next available print device.

This gives you highly efficient output management.

OM Plus can count pages and is able to automatically re-route jobs based on page count.

This improves throughput by utilizing a higher volume (and usually lower cost) printer.

Print jobs can be automatically re-routed by OM Plus from low speed to higher speed devices in real time.

You can print more documents, faster!

UNIX, Linux, and Windows all use print spoolers at the operating system level. However, they have many inherent weaknesses:

Jobs are automatically deleted after delivery making reprints and recovery impossible.

The print spooler is not able to communicate with the printing device so there is no way to confirm that the printing function actually occurred.

There is no print failover, load balancing or audit trail. There is no queue management of devices.
