PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Dear parents and guardians,

Farewell to 2017

As we come to the end of another year it is very timely to think of the many successes in and outside of the classroom. Academically our children have continued to succeed in numerous ways. NAPLAN and ICAS results, competitions in Art, Science Talent Search, Multimedia and Indonesian. In sport we have had a very successful year having excellent results in Swimming, Athletics, Cross Country, and many inter school sporting events. Special days such as Grandparents Day, Aladdin and Book Week, camps, as well as interesting educational excursions and incursions have made sure that positive learning experiences occurred outside of formal lesson time. The focus on children reaching their personal goals has always been a priority.

I would like to thank our School Councillors, led by Kristen Steer, who contribute to the governance of the school and support and oversee the school’s direction, policy and planning. Thanks also to the PFA, led by Andrea Fyfe and the PFA Committee for organising amazing school events for students and supporting so many others.

Thank you again to all the parents and helpers that work in the school. Without your help we would be much the poorer.

And finally I would like to thank our dedicated and hardworking staff (non-teaching and classroom) who have contributed to the success of Essex Heights PS in 2017. Their professionalism and the high level of care shown to all of our students are all highly valued and acknowledged by our community.

Year 6 Graduation

This week our Year 6 students celebrated the end of their primary education at Essex Heights. Tuesday was a truly marvellous day. The Graduation Committee did an amazing job in organising all aspects of the day. The luncheon and the setup of the Hall was spectacular, and the evening celebration was touching and inspiring. Our Year 6 students were once again the stars of the show. As they leave Essex Heights for the last time today we wish them every success in the future and implore them to always have Essex Heights PS close to their hearts. Finally, a huge thank you to the staff and all of the parents who helped to make this day so special for the Graduating Class of 2017. Good Luck and Best wishes to you all!!

A Visit from Santa

On Wednesday afternoon our Prep classes had an extraordinary visit from Santa. We were all so surprised that he took the time to deliver individual letters to every Prep student. A few of the children actually ‘saw him’ oh so briefly at the front of the school. Ina found the parcel of letters out the front!! They were so cold ……. they must have come from the North Pole!! The children were so lucky and happy to have Santa reply to the letters they had sent earlier in the year!!! How special!!

2018 Dance Program and Concert

We are looking forward to our Dance Program and Concert which will take place in Terms 1 and 2 of next year. This is an exciting event that is part of our Health and PE Program and involves all students from Prep to Year 6. It encourages students to work collaboratively while increasing their understanding of timing and movement to music. It also includes a Performing Arts focus, with speaking parts allocated to senior students who are keen to act!

Students will participate in eight 30 minute group dance sessions (one session per week). These sessions will begin early in Term 1 2018.

The approximate cost of the program will be in the vicinity of $25 per student.

The Program will culminate in a spectacular dance concert at Forest Hill Secondary College in Term 2 (7th & 8th May 2018). Please look out for further details early next year.

I wish everyone in our community a safe and Merry Christmas and I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year.

George Perini Principal

National Songwriting Competition 2018

Music: Count Us In (MCUI) is Australia’s biggest school initiative; celebrating music and music education across the country. At Essex Heights, we are lucky enough to have had a past student involved in the writing of the 2015 Song. The Music: Count Us In National Songwriting Competition is currently open to help find the writers of the 2018 Program Song. Students must write a song to a brief to have their entry/entries considered.

We will use the MCUI National Songwriting Competition to help us write the 2018 Program Song. A small group of finalists will be selected to work in collaboration with each other, Program Ambassador John Foreman OAM and our 2018 Program Mentor at our 2018 Songwriting Workshop. Past Mentors have included Marcia Hines, Jay Laga’aia, Taylor Henderson and Katie Noonan.

The program song will be learned and performed by students of all ages and abilities. They are looking for song entries written by students that are catchy, optimistic and upbeat. Your song should be positive and not too tricky. It can be in any style or genre but remember to consider what will be popular amongst young people all over the country. Send a submission that demonstrates your ability to write for young people.
