Veterans Day originated as Armistice Day to mark the end of hostilities during what would

become known as World War I, “the war to end all wars.” The cessation of fighting was set to take place on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. In legislation that was passed in 1938, Nov. 11 was set aside as a day to remember the veterans of WWI. This legislation was amended in 1954 after the United States had participated in both World War II and the Korean War. On June 1, 1954, Public Law 380 was amended to change the name to Veterans Day, and designate it as a day for the nation to honor all American veterans from all wars.

Veterans Day is often confused with Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day. Memorial Day started with General Order No. 11, issued by General John Logan on May 5, 1868 and directed that “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.” The wounds of the Civil War were still quite fresh these short years later and the purpose of the day was to honor all, both Union and Confederate, who had given their lives in battle. By the year 1890 it was being remembered in most northern states, but southern states chose other days to remember their Civil War dead. After the close of WWI, May 30 was nationally recognized as a day to honor all Americans who died fighting in all wars. In the simplest terms,

Veterans Day honors all war veterans, while Memorial Day honors those who fell during battle.

Many years and many battles have passed since the armistice of Nov. 11, 1918. Nationwide today, the veteran population stands at just short of 22 million; Vermont veterans account for just fewer than 49,000 of that number. Meeting the needs of these veterans remains a challenge. The past 14 years have seen a steady flow of service members into combat and resulted in many returning with devastating

injuries; both physical and psychological. Advances in science and medicine continue to save the lives of those wounded in battle. This is a dramatic shift from 100, 50, or even 20 years ago, when those injuries would have taken the lives of those injured.

Those who served and appear unscathed still paid a price; they all

left a part of themselves behind and often feel that there is unfinished business to contend with. What we need to do is support efforts to support them. Many have returned to successful military and civilian careers and are enjoying life to its fullest extent. For those who struggle, some for more than 40 or 50 years, we owe them a chance to heal and become whole again. On this Veterans Day, I ask that you reach out to a veteran you may know or run into. Acknowledge the contribution to liberty that they have made and support them in any way that you can.

Veterans make a difference for kids in need at ChristmasWhen you are thinking about the

ways that veterans have served our community and country, don’t forget the ongoing service of local veterans in the Toys for Kids Vermont campaign each year.

Soon you will be able to find red barrels brimming with new toys at many locations around town; in fact, they’re all over Vermont. This is the effort of Toys for Kids Vermont, a nonprofit established by John Welsh in 1999. The program is a spin off of Toys for Tots, established in 1921. Toys for Kids Vermont is run by the Marine Corps League of Vermont and its five detachments based in St. Albans, Rutland, Brattleboro, Montpelier and Burlington. All donations to Toys for Kids Vermont are kept local.

Colchester’s own Herb Drew Jr. joined the Marine Corps League in Vermont in 2009, and is in his sixth year of helping run this toy-drive. Drew serves as junior vice commander of the Marine Corps League in Burlington’s Donald G. Cook Detachment.

Drew formerly served in the Marine Corps Reserve in mine warfare and demolition. He served for several tours overseas including to Okinawa, the Philippines, Formosa (now known as Taiwan) Bosnia and more. When

he returned, he married his wife and continued with his job at General Electric. Over his 39 years working with GE, Drew said he pretty much held every job from quality control engineer to group

After retiring at age 55, Drew now dedicates a good part of his year to helping Toys for Kids. The local nonprofit is made up of volunteers who collect toys and money, which are then distributed by the Salvation Army, Light Ministries and St. Joseph’s churches.

Drew said that in the Burlington area alone there are typically between 800-900 families in need.

Once it gets closer to December, Drew and other volunteers distribute 300-400 red barrels — donated by Ben and Jerry’s — to local businesses and community members who are willing to collect toys. Until Dec. 22, the last day the barrels are out, volunteers continue to collect the toys and donate them to the Salvation Army and churches that organize the toys based on gender and age groups.

The group is seeking younger volunteers willing to do some of the heavy lifting. Volunteers work until the last few days before Christmas distributing gifts to the many families in

Members of 802Crossfit will answer the call this Veterans Day, joining forces with the Three Wise Men Foundation to raise money and awareness for all who have and are currently serving.

Founded by Nathan Fletcher, the Three Wise Men Foundation was established in honor of Jeremy, Ben and Beau Wise — three brothers who collectively served over 1,600 days in Iraq and Afghanistan, where both Jeremy and Ben were killed in action. Beau remains on active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps.

The organization’s mission is to “launch a national movement to bring communities together on Veterans Day to honor those who survived their combat experience but have come home and are struggling,” according to its website.

On days of military observance throughout the year, Crossfitters from all over the world participate

in what is called a Hero Workout of the Day. These workouts tend to be “long, hard and grueling,” according to Sara Franco, who opened Essex’s 802Crossfit in 2013 with her husband Tarken.

Not all Airmen like to be recognized for good work, but that’s what one Airman got when he created a new revolutionary tool to fix F-16s. The state of the art tool gets jets back in the air in record time, securing their place in the defense of our great nation.

Master Sgt. Richard Miller, a machinist technician for the 158th Fighter Wing, has received recognition from as far up as Air Combat Command four-star general Gen. Herbert Carlisle. The “Horizontal Box Beam Boring Tool” Miller created is a reusable tool that allows a single person to fix a structural issue on F-16s that traditionally takes up to a year to fix, depending on Hill Air Force Base’s depot teams schedule. Then it takes three Airmen two weeks of work to remove and reinstall a major portion of the aft end of the aircraft. This new process saves the U.S. Air Force more than $33,000 per fix.

“We’re looking for this type of thinking across the force,” Carlisle stated. “And I want you to know that you’re acting on opportunities to

improve our fleet every day.”Although Miller is grateful, he said

much of his extensive work as a civilian machinist enabled him to come up with the solution.

“It was my intent to get one airplane back in the air,” he explained. “I had no idea it would get the notoriety it has gotten. When I saw we could have a jet down for an entire year, I wanted to fix it. We need to have all the iron in the air all the time.”

The inspiration came when the VTANG had an F-16 that was non-flyable because of corrosion in the horizontal stabilizer box section. The Depot from Hill Air Force base was brought in to fix it. Observing the fix, Miller took note as the team dismantled the entire aft section, filed the corrosion off, inserted the repair and then rebuilt the back of the craft.

Later when another plane had similar corrosion and the Depot team was backlogged out for a year Miller asked for permission to build a tool he thought could do the job quicker and easier while still being accurate. Within a week he had shaped and molded a new tool, calling it a Horizontal Box Beam Boring Tool.

Volunteers NeededThe Essex Parade Committee Inc., is in the early stages of planning the 2016 Essex Memorial Day Parade.

We would like to invite you to assist as a volunteer to help with the planning of this great community event.

The Essex Memorial Day parade is one of the largest in Vermont with over 135 groups within ten divisions

participating last year. The parade will take place on Saturday, May 28, 2016; line up starts at 8:00 a.m. and step off is at 10:00 a.m. from the Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction.

We value your participation and would appreciate your assistance. Please join us at the next committee meeting.

Show your support for military veteransThere are many ways to honor

the military at home and abroad in time for the November festivities. The following are just a handful of ways to show appreciation for military men and women.

• When dining out, ask your server if you can pay the tab for a soldier or veteran you see in the restaurant.

• Attend a military parade with your family and explain the significance of the day to children in attendance.

• Draft letters and send care packages to soldiers currently in service far away from home.

• Ask your company if Veterans Day or Remembrance Day can be an observed holiday at your place of business each year to pay homage to servicemen and women.

• Visit a military memorial in a city near you. Your town also may have its own memorial.

• Petition town officials to erect a memorial if your town does not already have one. Such memorials can be a source of inspiration for your community.

• Support a military family in your town who may be missing a loved one stationed elsewhere. Make meals, mow the lawn, help with grocery shopping, or simply provide emotional support.

• Volunteer time at a veterans’ hospital. You may be able to read with veterans or engage in other activities.

• Get involved with a military support charity that can provide much-needed funds to struggling families or disabled veterans.

• Have children speak with veterans in your family, including grandparents, uncles and aunts or even their own parents. It can help them gain perspective on the important roles the military plays.

• Ask a veteran to give a commencement speech at a school or to be the guest of honor at a special function.

• Drive disabled veterans to doctors appointments or to run any errands.

• Support a local VFW organization.• Create a scrapbook for a veteran

in your life.• Cheer for or thank military

personnel each time you see them. • Visit the veterans’ portion of a

nearby cemetery and place poppies or other flowers on the graves.

• Always keep the military on your mind and never forget those who have served and didn’t return home.
