There is the new power that we receive as Christians.
In our own lives, God will give us people who drive us
crazy. He will give us people that we can’t stand, whose
one goal in life seems to be to make our lives
miserable. But He commands us to love them. This
doesn’t mean that we’ll like them. But it does mean that
we will their good, we pray for them, and we show them
kindness. And by the grace of God within us, we can do
this.
St Philip Neri illustrates this new power in the way he
treated a couple of sacristans at his church in Rome.
They were renegade monks who had fled their
monastery. For some reason they hated Philip, and
made his life miserable. They knew his hatred of dirt, so
they gave him the dirtiest vestments they could find.
When he was about to begin Mass, they would
interrupt his preparation and send him to another altar.
They would lock the sacristy door when he wanted to
say Mass. Of course St Philip got frustrated with all this.
Once during Mass he looked at the crucifix and
complained: "Why don't you hear me, Jesus? I've asked
you again and again to give me patience. Why is my
soul still filled with thoughts of anger and impatience?"
He seemed to hear an answer: "Do you want
patience, Philip? I will give it to you, if your heart desires
it. You will earn it through these temptations of yours."
And God gave him the power to love these two gadflies.
In fact, the story has a happy ending.
One day, one of the monk sacristans started insulting
Philip. The other monk began to feel remorse, and
defended Philip. He ended up punching Philip's
tormentor, and Philip had to come to the rescue. Moved
by this, both monks asked his forgiveness and returned
to their monasteries.
Christ commands us to love others, especially those
who torment us. And, like St Philip Neri, with God’s
grace we’re capable of that.
Father Michael
Youth & Young Adult Ministry
A Letter of Farewell:
Over the past year I have been the Youth Minister for
the St. Marys and Kersey Parishes. In July, I will be
leaving my position here due to family obligations. As I
leave I wanted to share my perspective of how Youth
Ministry has gone this year.
Blessed. In a word Youth Ministry has been blessed
this year in many ways. Many people would measure
success by the number of students that attend the
weekly gatherings, or the events. They could measure it
by how much money was fundraised in the past year.
Still others would base it on the number of volunteers
there are, or some other quantifiable method.
Instead of being focused on numbers, I would be
inclined to measure the value of the year by something
different. I would measure it by what occurred in the
hearts and dispositions of the young people of our
churches. They became more open to discussions of
faith. The students instigated many of these discussions
by their questions on how to defend the faith. They
served their fellow man by respecting the human dignity
inherent to each individual as created in the image and
likeness of God. Many have a profound desire for a
deeper experience of God, and long to pursue that
relationship.
As I leave my position of Youth Minister, I pray that this
progress will continue. I thank everyone who
contributed to youth ministry in any way. I pray that
there will be those in the parishes who will step up to
volunteer with the youth to give them a good
environment to continue to grow their relationship with
God. Thank you for accepting me into the community
and trusting me to minister to the youth.
Students- always remember that God loves you and
Christ is always by your side! I will be praying for you.
God bless you all! Scott Becker
14th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Accepting the Christian Message
Jesus said to the disciples, “Whenever you enter a town
and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and
say, “even the dust of your town that clings to our feet,
we wipe off in protest against you. Yet know this: the
kingdom of God had come near.”” Luke 10:10-11
Question of the Week
Adult: Where do you see the message of Christian
faith being rejected in the world today? What
is your response to that?
Youth: What can you do when you are generous
with others, and they do not want what you
give them?

The Rosary
According to a Dominican tradition, the rosary was
given to Saint Dominic in an apparition by the Blessed
Virgin Mary in the 16th century in the church of Prouille.
This Marian apparition received the title of Our Lady of
the Rosary.
According to Catholic tradition, the rosary was instituted
by the Blessed Virgin Mary herself. In the 13th century,
she is said to have appeared to St. Dominic (founder of
the Dominicans), given him a rosary, and asked that
Christians pray the Hail Mary, Our Father and Glory Be prayers instead of the Psalms.
Why is the Rosary called the rosary?
The Holy Rosary (/ˈroʊzəri/; Latin: rosarium, in the sense of "crown of roses" or "garland of
roses"), also known as the Dominican Rosary, refers to a form of prayer used in the Catholic Church and to the string
of knots or beads used to count the component prayers. ... Five decades are recited per rosary.
Why is the Rosary important to the Catholic faith?
The rosary is important because it is beginning Christian prayer: meditation on the various events in salvation history
and asking God how to apply them in your life. It is important because Our Blessed Lady, herself, came from heaven
and asked us to unite ourselves with her Son through this prayer each day.
What does each decade of the rosary represent?
When Christian people pray the Rosary they meditate on (think about) the life of Jesus. ... The Rosary divides the life
of Jesus into three sections called mysteries: the Joyful Mysteries, the Sorrowful Mysteries and the Glorious Mysteries.
Each mystery is broken down into five decades (sets of prayer of 10 “Hail Marys”).
What are the four sets of mysteries of the rosary?
The Mysteries of the Rosary are meditations on episodes in the life and death of Jesus from the Annunciation to the
Ascension and beyond. These are traditionally grouped by fives into themed sets known as the Joyful (or Joyous)
Mysteries, the Sorrowful Mysteries, and the Glorious Mysteries.
What are the 5 Luminous Mysteries?
On October 16, 2002, Pope John Paul II, declared that the following year would be the “Year of the Rosary”. For the
first time in centuries a change was made in the rosary. The Pope added and defined 5 new mysteries that concerned
events in the public life of Jesus. These new mysteries were called the “Luminous Mysteries” or “Mysteries of Light”
Today’s complete rosary is now made up of twenty decades of the Hail Mary, separated by an Our Father and a Glory
Be and sometimes the Fatima prayer. Evidence again that the rosary is a living prayer that grows with the church. We
usually break the rosary into four sets. The four sets are The Joyful Mysteries, The Sorrowful Mysteries, The Glorious
Mysteries, and the Luminous Mysteries. One set is prayed on a rosary that has five decades. Each set is prayed on
designated days of the week. The First Luminous Mystery – The Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan. ...
The Second Luminous Mystery – The Wedding Feast at Cana. ...The Third Luminous Mystery – The Proclamation of
the Kingdom. ...The Fourth Luminous Mystery – The Transfiguration. ...The Fifth Luminous Mystery – The Institution of
the Eucharist.
October, Month of the Rosary. ... This is primarily due to the fact that the liturgical feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is
celebrated annually on October 7. It was instituted to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary in gratitude for the protection that
she gives the Church in answer to the praying of the Rosary by the faithful.
