STONE TOWN, (Tanzania) 11 Sept—Passengers on the aging, crowded boatheaded for one of Tanzania’s top tourist destinations said they realized somethingwas wrong when the overnight ferry began to list from side to side.

Then water rushed through and killed the engines, sending the MV SpiceIslanders upside down and pitching hundreds of people into the deep sea earlySaturday morning. A witness counted nearly 200 bodies, and the president of thenearby island of Zanzibar said more than 570 people were rescued, suggesting theboat was overloaded. Some survivors said the boat’s capacity was about 600.

Those lucky enough to find something to cling to floated in the dark watersfor at least three hours until the strong currents began to wash them up on the whitesandy shores of Zanzibar. As the sun rose, news of the tragedy had already spreadthroughout the community and thousands of people were on the beach, desperatelyhoping their family members would be the next to emerge from the waves. NEW HAVEN, 11 Sept—Males of somehummingbird species create loud sounds duringmating displays by using their tail feathers as they“dive-bomb” past females, US researchers say.

Scientists at Yale University discovered malesproduce the loud sounds as the air flows past thetail feathers in the dive, causing them to flutter, aNational Science Foundation release saidThursday.

When the courting male bird reaches the lowestpoint of his dive, which can begin anywhere from

5 to 40 yards above a perched female, he rapidlyspreads and then closes his tail feathers, causingthem to flutter and generate sound.

Yale researcher Christopher Clark says malesof different hummingbird species all have theirown signature sound. The size, shape, mass andstiffness of the hummingbird’s feathers create thetone of each species’ particular sound, he said.

LOS ANGELES, 11 Sept—Scientists at theUniversity of California Los Angeles campus haveannounced that they have successfully used newprediction algorithms to forecast climate up to 16months in advance.

Professor Michael Ghil said in a UCLA newsrelease Friday his team used new predictionalgorithms based on matching ocean temperaturerecords with new theories on how long-term climatetrends are influenced by short-term weatherextremes.

Ghil, a distinguished professor of climatedynamics in the UCLA Department of Atmosphericand Oceanic Sciences and senior author of theresearch, said the new prediction formulas will giveclimate experts and governments clues about long-term swings in the El Nino/La Nina oscillation inthe Pacific Ocean, which drastically affects weatherin the Americas, Asia and Australia.

The new forecasting tool uses sea temperaturesand has been tested on decades of historical data.The forecasts were then cross-checked againstactual climate trends.

The UCLA team also said that their 16-monthforecasts were more accurate than previous forecaststhat went only 8 months forward.

The study is currently available online in thejournal Proceedings of the National Academy ofSciences (PNAS) and will be published in anupcoming print edition of the journal.

collapses in NW ChinaXI’AN, 11 Sept—The wall of a shopping mall collapsed in Xi’an, capital

Acetaminophen, more commonly known asTylenol, helps relieve pain and reduce fever. Theover-the-counter drug is a major ingredient inmany cold and flu remedies as well as prescriptionpainkillers like Percocet and Vicodin.

Doctors at the Keck School of Medicine of USChave identified a protein ‘Sab’ on the mitochondriaof liver cells in mice that, when silenced, protectsagainst liver toxicity usually associated with excessdoses of acetaminophen.

Researchers have long believed thatacetaminophen was converted into toxic metabolitesthat, in excess, overwhelm liver cells, causing themto die. In the current study, the scientists silencedSab in mice, which did not affect the metabolism ofacetaminophen but successfully prevented liverinjury. Southwest Airlines flight headed for Baltimore wasdiverted to Nashville after what he described as“suspicious behavior” by a passenger.

During the past (24) hours, weather have been partly cloudy in Kachin State, rain or thundershowers have been isolated in Kayah State, scattered in Upper Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway and Ayeyawady Regions, Shan and Chin States, fairly widespread in Lower Sagaing and Bago Regions and widespread in the remaining Regions and States with regionally heavyfalls in Taninthayi Region and isolated heavy falls in Mon State. The noteworthy amounts of rainfall recorded were Myeik (4.09) inches, Kawthong (4.01) inches, Chaungzone (3.98) inches, Kyeikmaraw (2.59) inches, Bago (2.57) inches, Mudon (2.36) inches, Kawkayeik (1.73) inches and Minkin (1.65) inches.

Bay Inference Monsoon is strong in the Andaman Sea and South Bay and weak to moderate elsewhere in the Bay of Bengal.

State of the Sea Squalls with moderate to rough seas are likely at times Deltaic, Gulf of Mottama, off and along Mon-Taninthayi Coast. Surface wind speed in squalls may reach (35) mph. Sea will be moderate elsewhere in Myanmar waters.

LONDON, 11 Sept—West Brom secured theirfirst three points in the Premier League this sea-son with a 1-0 away win over Norwich City.

Peter Odemwingie scored the only goal ofthe game after a defensive mix-up, while he alsohad a second-half penalty saved.

The Baggies got off to the perfect start whenjust three minutes in a hopeful ball into theNorwich area caused problems for the hosts’defence. Ritchie de Laet’s headed backpassto debutant goalkeeper Declan Rudd wastoo short, allowing Odemwingie to steal into put his side ahead with his first goal ofthe season.

Norwich almost hit back immediately whenAndr-ew Surman found Chris Martin in space in the

West Brom area. Martin drilled the ball across the boxand his delivery was met by Ben Foster, but with

almost an empty goal facing Grant Holt, the strikerfailed to find the target from just a few yards out.

Both sides were playing with thekind of confidence that

suggested their current league positionswere false. West Brom were looking

dangerous on the break whilst Norwichpassed the ball around with real purpose.

Norwich were taking more control of the gameand tested Foster for the first time in the 33rd
