The C
leveland Cultural G
ardens is a one-of-a-kind world
class collection
of international
gardens. E
ach ethnic
comm
unity develops
their site
to show
their
culture
and history through sculptures, plaques, fountains, and
plantings of
all kinds.
This
unique outdoor
museum
exhibits sculptures from a variety of internationally know
n
artists. Currently there are tw
enty-nine established gardens
located in the City of C
leveland’s Rockefeller P
ark with ten
more nationalities actively developing plans to establish
their gardens.
The
Shakespeare G
arden w
as the
first cultural
garden
initiated by Leo W
eidenthal in 1916.
Cleveland has historically been a hom
e to a very divergent
group of nationalities. The C
ultural Gardens reflect this
great ethnic diversity and demonstrate our city’s w
elcoming
and friendly environment. E
ach garden is maintained by a
large group of volunteers who plan activities, raise m
oney,
design and
oversee construction,
and w
eed, trim
, and
plant. As new
gardens are developing and planning their
sites, the older gardens are in the process of restoration and
developing new features.
Our m
otto is Peace T
hrough Mutual U
nderstanding. Each
garden focuses on the cultural successes of their country
and by sharing these achievements w
ith the other garden
mem
bers and the comm
unity at large, a mutual acceptance
and understanding is developed. The annual O
ne World
Day C
elebration highlights this concept and features the
gardens’ ethnic food, music, dance, and literature. T
he
day also celebrates with a spectacular P
arade of Flags and
a very
important
naturalization cerem
ony, w
elcoming
the new citizens from
a variety of countries to Am
erica
in the Cultural G
ardens where so m
any nationalities are
represented.
During the sum
mer the gardens hold concerts and program
s
of all kinds. For inform
ation, please visit our website
The
Cleveland
Cultural
Gardens
Federation
is the
representative organization
of the
cultural gardens
and was created to provide a direct link betw
een the gardens, the individual ethnic com
munities, and the
City of C
leveland who ow
ns the land and legislates its developm
ent.
The
Federation
has been
instrumental
in the
preservation of the gardens and maintaining public
awareness and interest.
The C
leveland Cultural G
ardens Federation is now
a proud m
ember of the U
niversity Circle, Inc fam
