the people in this country.” Despite the “dangersinherent” in the agreement, there has been nocritical public scrutiny of the arrangement.‘It is a BoP crisis’Arguing that the current economic crisis facing SriLanka is mainly a balance of payment crisis due to“the flight of capital, falling exports and risingimports,” the Alliance has attributed it to capitalmarket liberalisation, which, according to thecoalition, has made Sri Lanka susceptible tocapital flight, and mega development projectsfunded by borrowings of successivegovernments.Criticising the government for seeking to shift theburden and responsibility for the crisis onto thepeople, the coalition has contended that the newagreement and the related neoliberal economicpolicies will “further burden” the people in future. The Alliance has demanded that the 2017Budget, (likely to be presented in November)consider the people’s demands and not bereduced to the IMF conditions. It has drawn upplans to mobilise public opinion against theagreement.(The Hindu)

By Ruwan Laknath Jayakody(nation.lk) Lawyers in the Muslim communityhighlighted that they were not entirely happy orsatisfied with the work done by clerics in mosquesincluding imams to dispel misconceptions aboutthe Islamic religion’s fundamental text.Attorney-at-Law, President’s Counsel M.U.M. AliSabry said that while imams and clerics inmosques during afternoon prayers on Fridayclearly denounced such violence, murder andslaughter, which though not allowed under anycircumstances, was practised by the Islamic Stateof Iraq and Syria (ISIS) or Islamic State of Iraq andthe Levant (ISIL), there was much room for furtherimprovement concerning clarifying matters.Speaking about ISIS/ISIL and Muslims in SriLanka, Ali Sabry explained that radicalization wasa possibility and that there was no point in living indenial regarding the issue.Rather than pointing the finger at anyone, it is theresponsibility of Sri Lankans to identify andprevent, any kind of infiltration by the ISIS and thebrainwashing of our boys and girls, he remarked. It must be noted that the barbaric practices of theISIS have no place in our Islamic community and

such nonsense has no place in the Islamicreligious text, and as a community we must denysuch, disassociate ourselves from such, and standagainst such, he pointed out.The other aspect of this concerns fishing introubled waters, where those interested in eitherside of the divide, make use of this situation orhijack it in a sense, in order to divide our people,he mentioned, adding that such takes place themoment we disengage with one another.Though this is not a particular community’sproblem and must instead be seen as a commonproblem faced by the nation, of course theMuslims have a greater role to play as thecatchment area so to speak is within the Muslimcommunity, he emphasized, noting that therefore itwas essential that they be vigilant and openlycritical of any suspicions and even go beyondbeing merely critical to working in cooperation andcollaboration with the law enforcement to preventinfiltrations and such dangerous radicalizedpersons coming into the country. The media and the majority community must workwith the Muslim community in this regard, heoutlined.

Advisor to the Anti-Corruption Front,Rajith Keerthi Tennakoon said that Mahendran hadbeen appointed as the head of the said five-yeardevelopment plan. We do not know the terms yet,he noted. Member of the General Committee of the

NMSJ and Co-Convener of the Puravesi Balaya,Saman Ratnapriya added that they were notaverse to Mahendran, whom they deemed to be aneducated individual, being appointed as a memberof a committee of the plan-cum-programme.“During Mahendran’s tenure as the Governor of theCentral Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL), there wereissues. We demanded that he be removed and notbe reappointed. This new appointment poses aproblem. During his time at the helm of the CBSL,the country did not gain any special benefit fromthe CBSL. Rex Clementine reporting from Pallekele(island.lk) There was heartbreak for the supportersof the Sri Lankan cricket team during their tour ofEngland and the disappointments continued onthe first day of a fresh series against touringAustralians as the hosts were shot out for 117 intheir first innings after electing to bat first. It was an extremely disappointing display by theSri Lankan batsmen. While all the talk prior to theTest was about howspin bowling coulddominate the game,it was Australia’s twoquicks Mitchell Starcand JoshHazlewood, who didthe early damagewith some livelyspells.Australia also lostthe openers cheaply, but captain StevenSmith and UsmanKhawaja added an unbroken 59 run stand for thethird wicket to take the team to safety. Bothbatsmen were looking solid and Australia are setfor a big first innings lead.No play was possible after tea as rain kept theplayers indoors and with the condition notimproving, the umpires called off play at 4:15 localtime. Play will start early today at 9:45 am.It was Starc, returning to Test cricket after an eightmonth lay off due to injury, who did the earlydamage as he trapped opener Dimuth

Karunaratne leg before wicket. The batsmanunsuccessfully challenged the decision.Josh Hazlewood then found a nice line andcleverly mixing up his deliveries to put the SriLankans in two minds. He picked up three wicketsin the morning session and left-arm spinner SteveO’Keefe accounted for captain Angelo Mathews toreduce Sri Lanka to 84 for five at lunch.Sri Lanka handed over debuts to Lakshan

Sandakan andDhananjaya de Silvaand the latter went ontotop score in the innings.Batting at number six,De Silva got off themark by lofting O’Keefefor a straight six.De Silva fell in the firstover after lunch whenJoe Burns at short legtook a catch to giveNathan Lyon his firstwicket in the innings.

Lyon finished with three for 12 polishing up the tail.Hazlewood wasn’t required to bowl after lunch.Starc and O’Keefe finished with two wicketsapiece as Sri Lanka’s last five wickets fell for 30runs inside 6.2 overs. It was a poor display by the Sri Lankan batsmen. In England at least they had excuses like the coldand green tops, but in home conditions repeatedperformances like in England asked seriousquestions about the technique of the home teambatsmen playing quality fast bowling.

by Reemus Fernando(island.lk) World Cup winning captain and Ministerof Ports and Shipping Arjuna Ranatunga said thathe would not have coached Australians if he werethe legendary spinner Muttiah Muralitharan andpointed out the lack of interest of current cricketadministrators to obtain services of retiredveterans as the reason for the current predicamentin cricket."I would not have done that if I were Murali. I amnot going to pass a judgment on what Murali did.But we can analyse it in different angles," saidRanatunga during an open forum discussionconducted by Save the Sports Foundation inColombo on Tuesday."Coaching Australians even for a short stint is avictory for Murali. We have won here because itwas the Australians themselves who harassed himalleging that he was throwing the ball."In my personal point of view I think he shouldn’thave accepted to coach Australians," said theformer Test captain who backed Muralitharan tothe hilt when he faced allegations of throwingduring his playing days.Ranatunga alleged that the current administratorsof Sri Lanka Cricket had terminated the services ofmany local coaches and officials including themembers of the World Cup winning team after thelast AGM of the SLC."They first removed Sanath Jayasuriya. EricUpashantha was removed. Pushpakumara wasremoved. Chaminda Vaas and Upul Chandanawere removed. Country’s best coaches nowabroad. Chandika Hathurusinghe is a capablecoach but he is abroad. My point of view is that wehave enough good coaches to prepare winningteams. But the SLC has failed to obtain theirservices."What is the affiliation a foreign coach has. Theycome and go. Arjunafrom P24profile," said Ranatunga.Ranatunga opined that the national team wouldnot have had so many injury casualties in thebowling department had the SLC employed a fastbowling coach in the calibre of Chaminda Vaaswho is knowledgeable on local conditions."When we used to train we got fast bowlers tobowl at least one and half hours on each day twicea weak. If there were any bowler who could notlast that distance he would be identified very early.I can not remember fast bowlers like Vaas andPramodya getting injured like the current crop of

fast bowlers do. Now a days foreigners get fastbowlers to bowl 18 – 24 balls a day during training. That would not be the case under a local coach inthe calibre of Vaas and we would not have had somany casualties."A leading figure in campaign to oust the previousgovernment, Ranatunga said that he backed allefforts to curb corruption but bringing nationalcricketers to the FCID just before a vitalInternational Tournament would have had adetrimental effect on the morale of the team."I am not a backer of T20 cricket but I believebringing the likes of Angelo Mathews, RanganaHerath and Kusal before the T20 world cup hadhad a detrimental effect."

of the tri-series last week and his unbeaten 220here set a new record for an England Lionsplayer - topping captain Dawid Malan's 185against the same opposition on Thursday.Duckett shared in an unbeaten 367-runpartnership with Bell-Drummond, from only 232balls, as the Kent opener recorded his maiden

List A ton.The partnership wasthe highest ever atCanterbury - a recordheld by England'sEoin Morgan and NickCompton since 2009 -and just to make sureof their place inhistory, the Lions alsorecorded the highestList A score at theSpitfire Ground.“It's been the best dayof my career so far -the last 10 days havebeen a greatexperience for me,”Duckett said. “Therewere a couple oftimes early on when Ihit it, it dropped short

of fielders and I got a bit of luck.“When I got to 100 I said I'm going to push on. Itwas my day I guess - every time I hit the ball itwent into the gap. There as a lot of spin bowlingwhich I do prefer facing. I'll try and continue thisrun of form and score some runs when I go backto Northampton.”England won the toss and chose to bat, withMalan's the only England wicket falling. He wasstumped for 23 off 31 balls by NiroshanDickwella, providing Ramith Rambukwella withSri Lanka A's solitary bowling success of the day.Thisara Perera was Sri Lanka A’s mostexpensive bowler going for 101 runs off his 10overs without a wicket. Before the match Malan had spoken to the teamof adaptability, both with the bat and ball -something which had already won the tri-seriesfor the Lions following Sunday's victory overPakistan A. Toby Roland-Jones and GeorgeGarton were the only changes from the thatmatch, replacing Mark Wood, who had returnedto Durham, and Sam Curran. But it took England's bowling attack 14 oversbefore they took their first wicket, when Dickwellawas caught by Sam Billings from a GeorgeGarton delivery with the score on 105. That wasquickly followed by the dismissal of Sri Lanka A'sother opener, Mahela Udawatte for 40, in the

same over.Angelo Perera led Sri Lanka A's fightback with ascore of 69 before being caught by Duckett froma Saqib Mahmood delivery. Rambukwella wasalso dismissed by Mahmood, caught by TomCurran.Garton added to his wicket haul for the day bybowling Thisara Perera and Sachith Pathiranafor 45 and 18 respectively. The four wickets fromGarton, with two from Liam Dawson and oneeach for Malan and Brett D'Oliveira ensured SriLanka were all out for 285, giving England ahuge win.Andy Flower, the Lions coach, said: “We'veplayed four matches and we've won four. We'vehad some great performances and we havetaken opportunities to put young players outthere.“That's a healthy thing for England cricket if theyare pushing for places. There have been somegreat performances, some exciting performances- we have seen four centurions and some verybig individual scores this series.”Scores: England Lions 425-1 in 50 overs (D Bell-Drummmond 171 n.o., D Malan 23, B Duckett220 n.o.)Sri Lanka A 285 in 47.3 overs (N Dickwella 60, MUdawatte 40, A Perera 69, T Perera 45, SMahmood 2/57, G Garton 4/48, L Dawson 2/41)

Dinesh Weerawansa(dailynews.lk) Asian Games gold medallist S.L.B.Rosa could undoubtedly be rated one of the bestlong distance runners that Sri Lanka has everproduced. Shattering his 40-year-old Sri Lankarecord in the men’s marathon is a dream for anyathlete.Anuradha Indrajith Cooray achieved this rarehonour of erasing Rosa’s Sri Lanka record at the2015 London Marathon. Despite finishing 14th,Cooray’s timing of two hours, 13 minutes and 47seconds was good enough for him to pass Rosa’sSri Lanka mark established at the FukuokaMarathon way back in 1975.This unique achievement gave the London-basedlong distance specialist a rare opportunity tocompeting not only at the IAAF WorldChampionship in China last year, but also at the2016 Rio Olympic Games. “That was one of mygreatest races and I was in top form. I am glad thatI was able to account for the Sri Lanka marathonrecord, previously held by one of the greatestathletes in Sri Lanka history. It was a great honourfor me,” said Cooray in a telephone interview fromKenya.“I have been training in Kenya for the past fiveweeks. On completion of that, I will be returning toColombo and then head to Rio with the Sri Lankacontingent,” said the 38-year-old long distancespecialist who will be competing in his third

Olympic Games after representing Sri Lanka at theAthens 2004 and London 2012 Olympic Games. On his Olympic debut in Athens 12 years agoCooray secured 30th place out of 113 competitorswith a timing of two hours, 19 minutes and 24seconds. At the Olympic Games in London,Cooray managed to finish 55th out of 101competitors in 2:20.41.After competing in the Greekcapital 12 years ago, Coorayopted to settle down in the UK,finding employment in aLondon suburb. That gave himan opportunity to train underveteran coach Nick Taylor atBuckinghamshire’s Vale ofAylesbury Athletic Club.Cooray had initially been a5,000m runner during hisschool career at DivulapitiyaCentral College. Having joinedSri Lanka Army in 1999 andcoming under the watchful eyesof the late Brigadier ParryLiyanage, Cooray got an ideal opportunity tosharpen his skills. In his very first year with theArmy Sports Club, Cooray won the men’s 10,000msilver medal at the 1999 South Asian Games inKathmandu.“I have been engaged in high altitude training inIten, a town in Elgeyo-Marakwet County of Kenya,

which is located 2,400m above sea level. Lastweek I ran a 30km time trial and clocked mypersonal best of one hour and 45 minutes,” saidCooray who has been appointed the overallcaptain of the ten-member Sri Lanka contingent forRio.Cooray was unfortunate to miss the men’smarathon gold medal at this year’s South Asian

Games in Guwahati, India by amere second. India's NithendraSingh clocked 2:15.18 secondsto edge him out and take thegold medal. The Lankanfinished second to take thesilver in 2:15.19.Although Cooray was aiming tofinish the Beijing 2015 WorldChampionship marathon with abetter timing after hisimpressive run at the LondonMarathon, the unfavourableweather conditions in theChinese capital prevented himfrom doing so. Corray was not

the only victim but all top marathon runnerssuffered the same fate, finishing nowhere neartheir personal best timings. “If I had done mypersonal best at the World Championship, I wouldhave finished third. But the weather was playinghavoc, forcing a few top competitors to withdraw.Completing that hectic course alone was an

achievement. I had muscle pain for over a weekafter the race,” said Cooray who secured 29thplace out of 68 competitors.Cooray has been training in Kenya with some ofthe top marathon runners in the world in his sixthstint in the African continent country. “I think I am ingood shape after the training in Kenya. This could be my final Olympics, although I plan tocompete at next year’s IAAF WorldChampionships. My target in Rio is to complete themarathon course in two hours 11 minutes to twohours 12. If I can achieve that, I should be able tosecure a place between 15 to 20,” he said.Cooray has special dreams when his adopted cityhosts the next edition of the IAAF WorldChampionship. “I think I have a good advantagewhen the next World Championship will be held inLondon next year. After the Rio Games, I will fullyconcentrate on that,” he added.“It is not easy to survive in the sport. Some allegedthat I am old and could not improve anymore. But Iproved the critics wrong at last year’s LondonMarathon. Similarly, I want to come out with somenotable performances in Rio, improve further onmy Sri Lanka record,” Cooray said.He thanked the National Olympic Committee of SriLanka for the support extended. “I must thank theNOC for helping me in my preparations and alsoSports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera. He calls meregularly and inquire about my progress,” heconcluded.

Lyceum, Wattala opting to bat firstamassed 278 for two in their 40 over –semifinals and the final of this tournamentplayed as 40-over games – after theiropeners, Shabiq Ifthari and SharmeeganSridharan got them to a perfect startputting on an opening stand of 80 in justunder 13 overs.Once Shabiq departed for a well-made 41,runs gushed as Sridharan found an idealpartner in Gihan De Zoysa to carry on thegood work adding an additional impetus torate of scoring. The 198 partnership this pair shared forthe unfinished third wicket displaying abatsman-ship of amazing freedom andauthority carried Lyceum, Wattala to atremendous position from where theycould control the game as they desired.Sridharan remained unbeaten on a 99-ball

112 with 10 fours whilst Gihan finishedwith an undefeated 102 that he scored offjust 97 balls with 12 fours and a six.Lyceum, Nugegoda were never in aposition to reach the target of 279 as thesheer weight of which was enough tomake them shiver. In their reply Nugegodateam could not muster a single sizablepartnership at least to get closer to thetarget before they succumbed to 108 allout in just under 20 overs to loss the finalsby 170 runs.Apart Senidu Bandara (29) and ShvikhMoulana (21) no other Nugegodabatsman could come out with a usefulcontribution with the bat whilst Wattalabowlers, Gihan De Soyza and PavithLahandakurage sharing seven wicketsbetween them did the principle damage tothe losers.

By Lakshman Ranasinghe(sundaytimes.lk) Sri Lanka’s (SL) NationalShooting team made their motherland proud bywinning 18 Gold, 9 Silver and 11 Bronze medals atthe International Metallic Silhouette ShootingUnion (IMSSU) Shooting Championships 2016held in South Africa. For the first time in SL’sShooting history, a total of 38 medals were won inan international event. SL’s Shooters won 5individual events and 1 team event and wereplaced 1st and 2nd Runners-up in a number ofother events.IMSSU Shooting is a Sport in which metalsilhouettes of different sizes are shot at from

various distances, using high powered, small and big bore rifles and pistols and airweapons. The Sport requires skill andprecision, and suitable ammunition andfirearms. The Champion SL team of 8Shooters, included 5 from the SL Army and3 others, including a junior Shooter from St.Thomas’ College (STC), Mt. Lavinia, representing clubs affiliated to the NationalRifle Association.136 Shooters from Australia, South Africa,France, Austria and Finland participated inthis 14-day major Shooting Championshipworked off at the Bloemfontein Shooting

Range, under freezing conditions to which ourlocal Shooters were definitely not accustomed to.Apart from having to brave ‘alien’ weather, theSL Shooters were severely handicapped by thelack of proper firearms and ammunition toparticipate in quite a few of the events. It wassad to note that the cost of approximately Rs500,000 per Shooter, had to be borne by theShooters themselves.Due to lack of proper firearms, the SL Shootersconcentrated mainly on Small Bore Rifle, Lightand Silhouette and Small Bore Rifle open sightsand Silhouette events. It was heartbreaking to

note that the SLShooters werecompelled to buyammunition and hire

firearms in South Africa using their own funds, toparticipate in some of the other events they wereconfident of success. Given adequate and properresources, and sufficient funding, the SL Shooterscould have excelled in many other events to be atthe top pf world shooting. Results:Small Bore Rifle- Light: Cpt P.K.J.S.
