Industrial Base of the Basque Country

The Basque Country started, in the early XIXth

century, its incorporation to the industrial

revolution process, thus being the first

region in Spain to do so

Since then, the industrial base of the Basque

Country economy has been adapting to the

successive “crisis”, keeping its INDUSTRY, as

the major economical engine

A new world map:

The incorporation of emerging countries to

the global economy draws a new global map,

where the population, the demographic

trends and the development model of

these countries, will generate not just a new

production scenario, but also a consumption

one.

The Basque Country has CLEAR ECONOMIC LIMITATIONS:

Small economy

Territory: Space shortage, dense population

Mature population

Lacking of natural resources

No own energy sources

To face the Globalised Economy Threat the Basque Government

planned in mid 2007 the integration of the Agencies related to innovation

activities:

Saretek (Basque Science, Technology and Innovation Network

“BSTIN”)

Eurobulegoa (Basque Agency for the Internationalization of R&D&i)
