The tennis tournament will be directed by the USDTA tennis committee. NTRP ratings shall be used for rating and categorizing players. If there are any questions as to one’s ability, either the facility pro or the USDTA tennis committee will rate the players (during the Sunday mixer). If there is a doubles team with the players having different ratings, then the highest rating of the two players shall be the team rating.

Dependents under 18 years of age or special guests shall not be allowed to play without specialpermission from the USDTA Board of Directors. Regular play shall be scheduled Monday throughFriday. Wednesday tennis will be optional, as it will be an open day. Additional courts may be available for pick-up matches. Tentative format for the tennis program shall consist of singles, doubles and mixed doubles. The tournament committee reserves the right to change or modify the format to benefit the USDTA members. A, B and any other divisions will be decided by the tournament committee. The format will be determined on the number of entries.

To participate in the entire program consider arriving Saturday evening or early Sunday morningand departing on Saturday. Dentists will not be permitted on the tennis courts while the scientificprograms are in session.

The Social Program is included in registration and social fees. Tennis is included for all dental professionals signed up for the scientific program. Tennis fee is optional for spouse/guest.

The scientific program will consist of 16 continuing education units for the week. All participants must be present for the entire program to receive all units. Lectures begin promptly at 7:30am. Breakfast is included for the doctors participating in the scientific session.

Topic: Contemporary Issues in Periodontics and Oral Implantology

Course Objective: Describe the pharmacology and mechanism of action of opioid and non-opioid analgesics, explain the intended role of opioid and non-opioid analgesics in the management of acute dental pain, describe techniques useful in developing individualized pain management plans, and discuss appropriate prescribing practices for opioid and non-opioid analgesics.

Tom Viola is a board-certified pharmacist who also serves the professions of dentistry as a clinical educator, professional speaker and published author, in the areas of oral pharmacology and local anesthesia. Tom is a member of the faculty of 10 dental professional degree programs and has received several awards for outstanding teacher of the year. Tom is well known nationally and internationally for is regular contributions to several dental professional journals. Through his informative, humorous and engaging live seminars, and webinars, Tom as earned his reputation as the go-to specialist for making pharmacology practical and useful for all members of the dental team.

Topic: The Art of Diagnosing, and Precancerous Oral Lesions and Early Oral Cancer : Differential Diagnosis

Course Objective: The course will discuss the future of dentistry as we prepare to treat an exploding population of older Americans. The course will review special considerations for the dental team to keep in mind when treating the older patient with complicated health and dental issues. The use of Silver Diamine Fluorides and other methods of combating root caries as well providing care in a Long-Term Care situation will also be discussed.

Charles Doring, DDS is a native of Garrett Park, Md and a 1987 graduate of the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, University of Maryland. After graduation, Dr. Doring completed a general dental practice residency at Georgetown University Hospital. He currently is a partner in the dental practice of North Bethesda Dental Associates in Rockville , Md. Dr. Doring has a special interest in treating the medically and mentally challenged patient and is a member of the medical staff at Rockville Nursing Home and the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington. Dr. Doring is a past-president of the Maryland Academy of General Dentistry and was the chairperson of the 2009 Academy of General Dentistry Annual Meeting that was held in Baltimore. He is also a member of the University of Maryland School of Dentistry Dean’s Faculty in the Department of Periodontics/Dental Hygiene. Responsibilities include teaching courses on Dental Ethics, Geriatric Dentistry, Proper Prescription Writing, and Job Interviewing Skills. Dr. Doring is also the chairperson of the Legislative Affairs Committee of the Maryland State Dental Association. He is currently the president of the Southern Maryland Dental Society and a delegate to the ADA House of Delegates. Dr. Doring has a Mastership Award from the Academy of General Dentistry as well as Fellowship in the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentist. Dr. Doring and his wife Ellen, a middle school music teacher, reside in Laytonsville , Md. Their hobbies include model railroading, gardening, and cooking.

Topic: Novel Therapies for Caries Management

Course Objective: To update the knowledge on new therapies for caries risk assessment, prevention and management.

Marcelle Nascimento, DDS, MS, PhD joined the College of Dentistry, University of Florida in 2007 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Restorative Dental Sciences, Division of Operative Dentistry. In 2015, she was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure. Dr. Nascimento received her DDS degree from the University of Campinas, Brazil, and continued studying at that same institution, where she obtained a Master of Science and Ph.D. in Cariology. She has also practiced general dentistry for the Brazilian community, and more recently for the community of Gainesville , FL. She is the director of the new Cariology and Preventive Dentistry course offered to our 1DN students. Dr. Nascimento served as past President and group program chair of the IADR Cariology Research group. In addition, has been conducting research projects in the area Cariology, Oral Microbiology, Pediatric Dentistry, and Dental Education.

About the SpeakersTopic: Restorative Dentistry: From Occlusal to Full Rehabilitation

Course Objective: Recognizing occlusion disorders, restorative choices to resolve tooth, evaluate and choose better materials, discover materials and techniques to increase bonds.

Dr. Jeffrey Hoos, DMD is a world-renowned dental practitioner. He has invented many successful techniques to provide the best dental experience possible. His philosophy is to provide the highest quality dentistry in a friendly atmosphere. Dr. Hoos has been lecturing to dentists nationally and internationally over the last 25 years and continues to do so, teaching advanced techniques as well as the innovative procedures he’s developed. Dr. Jeffrey Hoos has been named “Hiossen’s Connecticut Clinical Director of Education.” Dr. Hoos has taught and will be teaching Dental Implant Dentistry at the Brush & Floss Dental Center. His vast experience in the placement and restoration of dental implants allows him to pass knowledge to other dentists who wish to provide dental implants for their patients.
