We live in a hedonistic age that does not want to hear about sin or God; the EGO wants to govern its own life according to its instincts and desires. It does not want any law or god to deprive it of its whims and pleasures. Because of the same lack of trans-cendent values that go beyond this world, people
live only to satisfy their own tastes or instincts. And without this perspective of transcendence, of God, of salvation, why would we call something attractive or appetizing a sin? What reasons should we have to reject something we like and attract? This is how poor the world is in the knowledge of God and of the transcendent values; to the point that the vast ma-jority, including many practicing Catholics, would not know how to react to their own children's objections to sin: “what's wrong with that behavior? Everybody does it.” We are in a pagan culture, far from God, which does not care what God wants and reveals, because it does not be-lieve. But those of us who do have faith should seek what is pleasing to God and avoid what is displeasing to him (sin), knowing that it hurts both us and others. What is sin? We can define it as what separates us from God, disobedience to God, going against the will of God which is always the best for us. All sin damages us and oth-ers, it goes against our vocation and mission in this world; hence the seriousness of not detecting it. It would be as if a patient can not detect any symptoms because they could not seek medicine or treatment and would eventually die. It is as such today. In a world that normalizes sin, one that calls health a disease, where it is normal to sin, no one believes it to be bad; but this is mortal and leads to total destruction, as Christ taught many times. Only Christ can free us from that tyranny of sin and lead us to the true happiness that the soul longs for. Therefore, we need God; not only to have abundant and eternal life -which is obviously the infinitely most valuable- but also to live civilly and happily in this world. But as men distance themselves from God, they become disfigured, they lose their divine identity, their soul becomes ill and their lives collapse. JESUS is the one who with his light shows the colors, the value of each thing, helps to distinguish be-tween good and evil. Without Him we could not. John 8:12. I am the light of the world; He who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. Lord open our hearts to you, doctor of the soul, so that you can heal us from the leprosy of sin, that we be your instru-ments to open the eyes of the blind and heal them of that disease that they cannot see due to their lack of light.

Vivimos en una época hedonista que no quiere oír hablar de pecado ni de Dios; el EGO quiere gobernar la propia vida según sus instintos y de-seos. No quiere ninguna ley ni dios que le priven de sus caprichos y placeres; por la misma falta de valores trascendentes, que vayan más allá de este mundo, la gente vive solo para satisfacer sus propios gustos o instintos. Y sin la perspectiva de trascendencia, de Dios, de salvación, ¿Por qué llamar pecado a algo atractivo y apetecible? ¿Qué motivos deberíamos tener para recha-zar algo que nos gusta y atrae? Así de pobre está el mundo en el conocimiento de Dios y de los valores trascendentes; hasta el punto que la inmensa mayoría, -incluyendo muchos católicos practicantes- no sa-brían cómo responder a las objeciones de sus propios hi-jos en favor del pecado: ¿qué tiene de malo? Todos lo ha-cen. Estamos en una cultura pagana, alejada de Dios, a la que no le importa lo que Dios quiere y revela, pues no cree. Pero los que tenemos fe, sí debemos procurar lo que agrada a Dios y evitar lo que le desagrada (el pecado) sabiendo que nos hiere y perjudica enormemente, tanto a nosotros como a los demás. ¿Qué es pecado? Podemos definirlo como lo que nos aparta de Dios, desobediencia a Dios, ir contra la volun-tad de Dios que es siempre lo mejor para nosotros. Todo pecado nos perjudica a nosotros y a los demás, va contra nuestra vocación y misión en este mundo, de ahí lo grave de no detectarlo. Sería como si un enfermo no detectara ningún síntoma pues no podría procurar remedio y salud y eventualmente moriría. Así sucede hoy. En un mundo que normaliza el pecado, que llama salud a la enfermedad, donde lo normal es pecar, nadie cree que sea malo, pero es mortal y encamina a la total destrucción, como Cristo enseñó muchas veces. Solo Cristo puede liberarnos de esa tiranía del pecado, y llevarnos a la felicidad verdadera que anhela el alma. Por lo tanto, necesitamos a Dios, no solo para tener vida en abundancia y eterna -que obviamente es lo infinitamente más valioso- sino también para vivir civilizada y felizmente en este mundo. Pero en la medida que los hombres se ale-jan de Dios, se desfiguran, pierde su identidad divina, se enferma su alma y ve colapsar su vida. JESUS es el que con su luz hace ver los colores, el valor de cada cosa, ayu-da a distinguir entre el bien y el mal. Sin El no podría-mos. Juan 8:12. Yo soy la luz del mundo; el que me si-gue, no andará en tinieblas, sino que tendrá la luz de la vida. Abre Señor nuestro corazón a ti, médico del alma, que pue-das sanarnos de la lepra del pecado, que seamos tus instru-mentos para abrir los ojos la los ciegos y sanar a muchos de esa enfermedad que no pueden ver por su falta de luz.

Saint Eusebius of Vercelli/San Eusebio de Vercelli Joaquín y Ana 2 de agosto
Nacido en la isla de Cerdeña, se convir-tió en miembro del clero romano y es el primer obispo registrado de Vercelli en Piamonte, en el noroeste de Italia. Eu-sebio también fue el primero en vincu-lar la vida monástica con la del clero, estableciendo una comunidad de su clero diocesano con el principio de que la mejor manera de santificar a su pue-blo era hacer que vieran a un clero for-mado en una virtud sólida y viviendo en comunidad. Fue enviado por el papa Liberio para persuadir al emperador de que llamara a un consejo para resolver los problemas católicos-arrianos.
Cuando fue llamado a Milán, Eusebio fue de mala gana, sintiendo que el bloqueo arriano se saldría con la suya, aunque los católicos eran más numerosos. August 2nd Born on the isle of Sardinia, he became a member of the Roman clergy, and is the first recorded bishop of Vercelli in Piedmont in northwest Italy. Eusebius was also the first to link the monastic life with that of the clergy, establishing a community of his diocesan clergy on the principle that the best way to sancti-fy his people was to have them see a clergy formed in solid virtue and living in community. He was sent by Pope Liberius to persuade the emperor to call
a council to settle Catholic-Arian troubles.
When it was called at Milan, Eusebius went reluc-tantly, sensing that the Arian block would have its way, although the Catholics were more numerous. He refused to go along with the condemnation of Saint Athanasius; instead, he laid the Nicene Creed on the table and insisted that all sign it before taking up any other matter. The emperor put pressure on him, but Eusebius insisted on Athanasius’ inno-cence and reminded the emperor that secular force should not be used to influence Church decisions. At first the emperor threatened to kill him, but later sent him into exile in Palestine. There the Arians dragged him through the streets and shut him up in a little room, releasing him only after his four-day hunger strike. They resumed their harassment short-ly after.
His exile continued in Asia Minor and Egypt, until the new emperor permitted him to be welcomed back to his see in Vercelli. Eusebius attended the Council of Alexandria with Athanasius and ap-proved the leniency shown to bishops who had wa-vered. He also worked with Saint Hilary of Poi-tiers against the Arians. Eusebius died peacefully in his own diocese at an advanced age.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to pur next associate pastor, Fr. Robert McGowan! Fr.
Robert is a familiar face here at St. Louis of France, having done his year as a seminaian intern
here in 2015 before being assigned to St. Gertrude the Great in Bell Gardens. He will be moving
in at the beginning of September. Fr. Robert is a true blessing and we are excited to have him at
our parish once again!

McGowan! Padre Robert es un rostro familiar aquí en la comunidad de San Luis de Francia, ya
que estuvo aquí en el 2015 como seminarista interno. Después de su ordenación al sacerdocio, el

Why Light a Candle
Lighting a candle before the image of a saint, the Blessed Virgin, or Jesus is a kind
gesture that helps express our prayer not only with words, but with actions.
This is not only good, but good for us.
These gestures help us express our faith, so that our prayer is more alive.
This has been a practice of faith in the Catholic church for centuries; like leaving a
constant reminder to our interceding saint or Blessed Mother of our humble petition
to God, which is an action that last longer than simply reciting our petition.
Lighting a candle in the church is a tangible symbol of our faith. From the baptis-
mal candle to the votive candle, the light is a symbol of our love towards God.
The significance of light in the Christian faith, and the importance of the candles in our
church expresses a vision of light that can be seen as a manifestation of the love of God.
The light as a manifestation of God, such as His first manifestation, since it is the very first
thing he created, in His infinite wisdom and goodness, has made the rest of creation visible.
Light, as a symbol of Christ, who said, “I am the true light”, and is the personification of the
Light of God which illuminates the world; that defeats death and banishes the darkness.
Let us recall the important role that the candle plays in the liturgy: on the day of
Christ’s presentation in the temple, where the candle represents Christ, the light that shines over
the nations, or in the Easter Vigil, in baptisms, funeral, etc.
During Baptism, the sacrament that sanctions the new Christian into their religious life, the
parents or godparents light a candle for the baptism, taking the flame from the Easter Candle
that is lit near the baptismal font or the altar for the occasion.
