United States Electricity Overview

• Germany energy model ‐ by 2050, 80 percent of power needs will be provided by VRE and there will be no need conventional spinning reserves

• U.S. believes it requires conventional spinning reserves to be operational to accommodate VRE

• Implementing the demand model could become more challenging in the U.S. than in most other developed markets

Deficiencies in Current Practice

• Traditionally, Real‐Time systems use power system models that differ considerably in detail and structure from the models used for offline studies

• Linkages between the different models are typically not maintained, and the different models often have incompatible data formats

• Power system models for real‐time systems are typically much simpler than the corresponding representations for offline power flow and dynamics studies

• State estimation is required in order to predict missing measurements.• Systems that use model calibration methods are ineffective for majority

of practical power networks since limited measurements are available• Identification & automatic filtering of errors in source of measurements

(Source: NERC White Paper)

Model Verification & Validation (V&V)

• Planning and operating decisions are based on the results of power system simulations

• Optimistic models can result in under‐investment or unsafe operating conditions

• Pessimistic models can also lead to unnecessary capital investment, thereby increasing the cost of electric power

• Realistic models are needed for ensuring reliable and economic power system operation. Hence it is a very crucial phase

• Validate the network model with real‐time and/or archived data in order to prepare a benchmarked model used for:• State estimation• Monitoring• Predictive simulation “what‐if”• Forensic analysis• Optimization• Proactive contingency analysis & Remedial Actions

Page 28: ETAP Integrated Smart Grid Solution - · PDF fileETAP Integrated Smart Grid Solution The Future of Power Systems ... • ETAP offers both strategies as part of the DMS

© 2013 ETAP &  Operation Technology, Inc.

Model Verification & Validation (V&V)

• Observe, Measure, Analyze actual behavior to understand system behavior

• Engineering judgment and generally accepted practices applied to:• Measuring or testing components or systems • Selecting component models • Determining component model constants • Tuning the overall system

• Validation means confirming that the simulated response (whether for a component or the overall power system) to a disturbance (steady‐state or transient) reasonably matches the measured response to a similar disturbance

Technology Breakthroughs

• 64‐Bit application• Calculation engines utilize multiple cores• New graphical package utilizing DirectX• Dynamic network reduction techniques• System Warehouse• Dynamic feeder assignments & subsystem determination• System capable of smooth operation with ‘Millions’ of

components and calculation times in ‘seconds’• Common Information Model (CIM) XML interface• Faster than real‐time applications using proactive

algorithms and look‐ahead capability• Smart Grid technology exists and its within reach

UC Irvine MicrogridRequirements

• Include static and dynamic behavior of the microgridcomponents such as inverters, Co‐gens, fuel cells, etc.

• Optimize the overall network not just localized improvements

• Utilize real‐time, historical, and forecasted data for optimization routines

• Provides an easy to use operator interface• Complete system situational awareness using limited metering points

• Integrate with existing smart grid circuits• Optimize network under grid connected mode• Ensure critical load is running under islanded mode
