A. Design Information

1. Narrative

The following design proposal will utilize a structured cabling network in a star topology. This network will use CAT 6 unshielded twisted pair (UTP) Gigabit Ethernet cabling, RJ45 terminator connectors, and 16 Southwire single gang old work electrical boxes each with 2 port Keystone wall plates. The network communications equipment will be housed in the Records room of the ABC District Special Programs Office and consist of a Cisco 2821 Integrated Services Router and Cisco SGE2000 24 port Gigabit Ethernet Switch. The Dell PowerEdge 6100 Server with internal tape backup will serve as the network server and will be connected to a CyberPower uninterruptable power supply (UPS). For a highly secure network we will use a Cisco ASA 5510 Series Adaptive Security Appliance. In addition, the equipment, TRENDnet 24 port patch panel, and CAT 6 UTP cables will be mounted on a StarTech 42u equipment rack and labeled according to BITSI standards. Our proposal calls for all horizontal cabling to use stranded UTP run from the equipment room switch to each of the 11 CAT 6 Keystone wall plates. From the wall outlets our proposal utilizes CAT 6 patch cables to connect each of the 9 Dell Precision T3500 desktop workstations that will outfit the work areas.

The Linksys WRV210 Wireless Gigabit Access Points will be wall mounted on the two farthest walls as to provide maximum connectivity for the 8 Dell Latitude E6520 laptops. These laptops will have 2 docking stations. One will be located in the conference room and the other will be located in the support staff area. All network computers will connect to the Internet using AT&T Network Solutions. All laptops will use AT& T laptop connect cards for online access when working away from the office. (This paragraph is confusing me about the 8 laptops. Should we spell out what we are doing the eighth one? We don’t have connect cards for 8 laptops, just for the 7 that will be available for away from the office use.)

In addition, the office will have access to the following network hardware: two HP LaserJet 2055dn Monochrome printers, one HP Color LaserJet MC2320nf all-in-one printer, and one Hitachi LCD ceiling-mounted projector and 49” x 87” projection screen.

B. Mobility

The ABC District Special Programs Office will be equipped with 7 Dell laptop computers with wireless capabilities inside or outside the office. When outside of the office each laptop will have laptop connect cards. This will enable employees to have the mobility and flexibility to keep in contact with the office with desktop-like functionality while out of the office. We will also provide the office will 2 Dell E-Legacy Extender mobile workstations (laptop docking stations) for added flexibility.

C. Security

Symantec Protection Suite Advanced Business Edition was chosen to provide firewall, virus, and anti-spyware protection for the office setting. We also have Firewall protection on the Cisco Router as well as on the Linksys wireless access points. Additionally, we have a Dell Laptop connected to the server in the Records room to provide an additional layer of Firewall security on our LAN. The best systems include multiple layers of protection in order to make intrusion as difficult as possible.

Page 13: ETEC650FinalProject

WAND IT Networking, Inc. DesignNetwork Design and Management Project

When reviewing products, we found McAfee and Symantec to be the leading producers of security software. Both companies have set the benchmark that others try to match, but the Symantec software was considerably cheaper. The McAfee Suite was almost $140 per license, while the Symantec Suite was under $80. Since both have comparable features and have won multiple awards, we went with the least expensive option.

Another consideration when choosing the Security software was multi-functionality. The Symantec software has the ability to provide some of the best security as well as backup and recovery features. By combining these features, we are lowering the risks of software conflict and streamlining the implementation and management of these features, thereby freeing personnel to do other tasks. This also means only one set of software to update, which will automatically download and install in the background as they are released.

The Symantec Protection Suite offers endpoint and email security as well as data protection and backup/recovery capabilities. It provides superior antivirus and antispyware protection for the entire office network, including the gateway and the server. By combining these tasks, the Office Manager’s job of managing the protection and backups of the system are streamlined. Also the bundling eliminates the need for training in multiple types of software. This will save both time and money for ABC District.

B. Proposed backup strategy and facilities

The Office Manager will set up the automatic backup times for each desktop and laptop computer as well as for the server using the Symantec Backup Exec™ System Recovery Server Edition which is part of the Symantec Protection Suite Advanced Business Edition. The automatic backups will run in the background, to allow work to continue as the data from each hard drive is copied. While late night is chosen by many companies, this can be set by the manager to best accommodate the office work schedule. The backup times can also be changed as needed by the Office Manager. He or she will also decide how long the backups are to be archived for recovery using the Symantec Backup Exec™ System Recovery Server Edition. Symantec Backup Exec™ offers the IT manager multiple options for storing backup data, including storing to a network location, a dynamic disk, or to a USB, as well as creating a customized Symantec System Recovery Disk CD/DVD. This System Recovery Disk can be used to do a restore on the entire server.

There is also a LightsOut Restore option which installs the Symantec recovery onto the file system in the system partition and creates an option during the Windows boot-up to access the recovery data. The Office manager will even have the option of “enabling file sharing” during the setup in order to remotely access the laptops in case a remote recovery is needed. This on-site management of the backups and recoveries will allow the ABC District Special Programs Office to configure the options to best meet their backup needs. Once the software is configured, the backups are automatic and the recoveries are quickly accomplished when needed. This software also provides server backup and recovery options to quickly restore the entire system if necessary.

Section 4 - Project Summary

A. Achievements of our proposal

WAND IT Networking Inc. has successfully designed, planned, budgeted and researched all products included in the ABC District Special Programs Office project. The design team is prepared to implement a highly secure networking system that consists of 9 work stations which include Dell desktop computers and 2 mobile docking stations, as well as a conference room equipped with a laser printer, projector, and wall screen for staff use. The records room will be converted to a network communications room consisting of a router, firewall appliance, 24-port switch, and server.

The wireless access points will be located in the Conference room and on the Curriculum Specialist Office on the opposite side of the building to maximize connectivity. In addition, employees will have easy access to the color laser printer in the Office Manager’s office. One monochrome printer will be installed in the Conference Room and one in the left corner office where the two Curriculum Specialists are housed.

Staff members will also be equipped with Dell laptops (8 are included in this design, 7 or personnel use and one for the Firewall connection to the server) and air cards that will provide mobility and flexibility for job related responsibilities. WAND IT Networking Inc. would like to thank you for providing us an opportunity to respond to your Request for Proposal.

B. Group reflections by the individuals of our overall project experience

1. Peggy Abadie’s Reflection

During the course of this Master’s program I have had the pleasure to work on a number of occasions with various members of the cohort in various settings. Three semesters ago the three women who are on this team with me and I wound up together on a project and found that we have a common interest. All four of us are part of the cohort not because we want a Master’s Degree but because we want to be Masters of the appropriate information to be considered Masters of Instructional Technology. That distinction has made all the difference. This is the third semester we have worked together and it is the fourth project we have worked on. It is such a pleasure to work with a team whose goal is not to put something together to turn in, but to learn the most we possibly can and employ it to respond to the learning queue you provided in designing this project.

Page 19: ETEC650FinalProject

WAND IT Networking, Inc. ProjectNetwork Design and Management Project Summary

Unlike my colleagues, the notion of working in the network world did not cause me any undue stress. I am the chief technology officer at Orleans Parish School Board and as such manage a highly complex state of the art network delivering a complete suite of voice, video and data to over 7,000 laptop devices. I will say that I have found the reading enlightening inasmuch as my area is above the engineering and technical design effort. I feel like the in depth look the class has provided has given me a better appreciation for the details that go into what my team does in the day to day of managing the infrastructure and the applications.

I like the project we worked on. It seems to have been designed to cover that which matters and leave out that portion that is not important in the process. At first I was concerned over how we would do cabling and LAN electronics for only $45,000. The my teammates reminded me that we were not going to include company funds like labor and profit margin, only hardware and software needed to build the network. As we are winding up this project it occurs to me what my vendors go through on a regular basis to understand what will best serve my needs, district projects, and still leave them standing when all is said and done. This is a good exercise on many levels.

2. Alicia Drake’s Reflection

When the semester began I was anxious about the depth of knowledge this class was going to cover. After having a study group with Paula, I felt more comfortable with my previous knowledge and the text book. We were able to discuss and cover the first six chapters pretty quickly. On our ride to SELU for the second Lab we discussed how we could accomplish a comprehensive, professional project. We were both delighted when Dr. Hancock said it could be a group project. We both naturally thought of our team we have formed during the course of SELU’s Master program.

Due to our experience working with each other in previous classes the group meetings we held were very productive and enlightening. I was very comfortable bouncing ideas off of my team members and appreciated their opinions and suggestions. At first glance this project seemed overwhelming. With the support of each other we have created a detailed and professional networking design and management project.

In reflection, there are not many things I would do differently if I would attempt this project again. Only two things come straight to mind. One would be the expertise other people hold regarding networking and resources available (with discounts of course). I would have liked to run my plan through one of my resources at school before submission. She would have added a different

Page 20: ETEC650FinalProject

WAND IT Networking, Inc. ProjectNetwork Design and Management Project Summary

perspective than my team members and I to the project. Due to cuts and new Federal guidelines at my school our contact was severed at the end of the school year.

The other aspect I would do differently concerns cabling. I would research fiber optic cabling instead of CAT 6. With more time I could find and contact a fiber optic installation company to get more information on their installations. I would investigate if it would be financially feasible to use fiber instead of UTP. Although this would add a large amount to an outside company my main focus would be the bottom dollar. I would highly recommend this change if it was within the budget.

3. Paula Naugle’s Reflection

WAND IT Networking Inc. is comprised of four individuals who each brought unique strengths to this project. We divided and worked on different parts of the project based on those individual strengths. Our first meeting consisted of deciding which topology we would use and laying out the networking design plan that would be used to complete this project. From there we were able to divide up the research of products to be purchased, and each of us had specific area to research (hardware, cabling, etc.). We put all of our resources into a shared Google document so that each one of us could work on it as time was available in our various schedules. As happens in each of our busy lives, finding times for face to face meetings that were agreeable to all four of us were complicated to schedule. We worked around this problem by communicating via Skype, text messages, and emails. Dividing and conquering helped us find all of the products we needed to include in this project. No one person was responsible for final decisions. We came together and discussed the pros and cons of each purchasing decision. I liked being able to bounce ideas off of my teammates.

As one member of our team says, “Sleep is totally overrated.” I decided that we didn’t allow enough time for product research. We were committed to finding the best products instead of just grabbing the first thing we found. If we were more experienced in doing this, we probably could have drawn on past experience instead of having to trudge through our learning curve. While I tend to work well under pressure, I would definitely schedule more time to do the research of products.

Page 21: ETEC650FinalProject

WAND IT Networking, Inc. ProjectNetwork Design and Management Project Summary

4. Mona Wexler’s Reflection

I have to say that when I first glanced at this Network project, it seemed way over my head, but I kept reading the textbook and the light bulbs began to go off. As I learned about the different pieces and how they connected at each layer of the OSI 7-layer diagram, I saw how this would apply to a setup.

When Paula and I came up to SELU (my first trip there BTW) for the 3rd Lab, was when Dr. Hancock spoke in depth about this project. When she and I found out that it could be a group effort, immediately we thought of our regular study/project group. The four of us have very effectively completed many different projects, so we have a high level of confidence in each other. This gave me a level of comfort because this summer has been a very rough one for me personally with my husband’s recent medical issues.

Usually, I am either right on schedule or even ahead of the assignments, so being behind was not a good feeling. I wish that I had reached out earlier to my group members so that we could have worked more gradually on this project. That being said, the summer is more difficult to coordinate for teachers since we do trainings and vacations during our summer break. The other thing that I would do differently would be to speak to several people that are friends who program and repair computers about the components in this project. If I had talked with them, then I could have saved lots of time spent researching the best parts for our network.

I have learned many things from this course and from this project. The research and the collaboration made this new knowledge much more real-world and concrete for me. Due to this project, I believe that I will better retain this information and be able to apply it.
