As a staff we have celebrated their successes as they moved through intermediate and secondary school, we have noted their graduations, and we have admired their post-study achievements. Where possible we have included these updates in our newsletters and at times we have had past students in to talk to our senior students about their adventures and achievements. Use of role models with strong connections to our school is a great motivator to our current students. As we approach the 20 th anniversary of the opening of our school, in 2017, we would like to increase the connections between past students and the school, so that these celebrations and role modelling opportunities can be increased. We have established an alumni web page for this purpose and would like our current community to spread the word about this to anyone they know with past links to the school. We are hoping that past students and staff members will register so that we can keep everyone informed of the 2017 celebrations and so that we can gather some memories and reflections about the early days of our school. 12 June 7.30pm AGM Family and Friends Family and Friends is a very important part of our school community. We have a few members retiring this year as their children leave to go to intermediate. We are now taking nominations for the executive committee. We look forward to hearing from you. If you have any queries contact the school office. This is a great way of meeting people and being part of our school community. Reminder to parents Please remember to name all the children’s uniforms, lunch boxes and drink bottles. This makes it much easier to get them returned to your child when they are misplaced. Rugby Sevens - Year 5 team The Year 5 rugby players at the sevens field day.

Chess Competition At the recent Eastern Zone Chess Tournament 26 teams from 12 different schools competed alongside Point View School. Our Point View Team A gained fourth place in the Tournament. This was a wonderful effort. All the children were very well behaved and played beautifully. The event was a great success and all the schools and the organisers have commented on how they have always enjoyed coming to Point View School. So, a HUGE THANKS to all the helpers behind the scenes who make this event a success each year. A special thanks to Robyn Hibberd and her group of wonderful helpers, including the school council, along with Mr Hickson who works tirelessly setting things up first thing in the mornings. We could not do it without you!

Assemblies Thank you to the parents and other visitors who support us in our assemblies by listening quietly to the music as children enter the hall and by listening attentively to items throughout the assembly. We treat our assemblies as formal occasions and use them to teach students how to behave in such formal settings. This involves entering as quietly as possible and listening quietly to the music and all ensuing items. Parents and other guests who model this formal behaviour are supporting us in this critical teaching situation. Thank you.
World Environment Day Friday 5 June At Point View school we care about the environment. Teaching our children about sustainable practices will help them as they grow into responsible citizens of the future. We have some wonderful examples of good practice at our school including Nude Food, Walking School Bus and Trees for Survival. Our BEE groups are learning about planting and caring for the Hive. Travelwise Update At Point View we do a lot to encourage our school community to think carefully about Road Safety. We run Road Safety campaigns to promote the safe speed of 40kms or less as drivers approach our school. Our Travelwise team members speak to drivers stopped by the police and give them a positive or negative comment depending on their speed. Our children are getting the message across to the drivers that they are in control of the cars and are encouraging them to keep up good driving habits or to think about bad ones, to keep them, their children and other children at our school safe. TravelWise is an Auckland Transport initiative and we hope to reach a new merit level by continuing with these and other road safety campaigns.
Juniors Tip Top trip This term Junior School classes have visited the Tip Top factory. This trip linked in with our science learning about heating, cooling and mixtures.
Netball Field Day Last Tuesday two Year 6 and two Year 5 teams took part in the Howick/Pakuranga netball field day at Lloyd Elsmore. It was a fun day with the focus on participation and skills practice. Not only did the players have to battle against other teams but they also had to battle the weather. What troupers they were. Their results were: Y6 Team 1 - 4 wins, 2 losses Y6 Team 2 - 6 wins Y5 Team 1 - 1 wins, a draw, 3 losses Y5 Team 2 - 4 wins, 2 losses A big thank you goes out to all the parent helpers on the day. Year 5 Science Intensive Day Last Friday the Year 5 team took part in a science intensive day. Students came dressed as scientists and engaged in exploring science concepts. They worked on electricity, colour and light, kitchen science, enviro science and launching rockets! A big congratulations to all the Year 5s for using their inquiring minds to ask great science questions. The day was huge success and we look forward to having another one soon.
