Germany• Foods-Salads and soups play a large part of the German. A Bavarian specialty is

weisswurt (a meat) but a meat that we all know and most love is bratwurst. Black forest cake is also a well loved desert.• Celebrations-Oktoberfest a celebration dating back to 1810 and was originally a

celebration of the wedding of Princess Teresa and Prince Ludwig.• Education-every state determines it’s own educational system each state does do

elementary from 6 to 10 yrs of age. After Grundschule (elementary) students will go through U.S. version of high school and then will attend a school with various vocational classes to help prepare them for life after school.• Area settled in Texas-Settled along the Guadalupe & Comal River’s in New

Braunfels, Fredericksburg, & Boerne.

Czechoslavakia• Food-not known for healthy eating, main dishes include chicken, pork,

& beef, served with some kind of sauce. Potatoes are very common side dishes. Crepes & honey cakes are common deserts.• Celebrations-Hromnice-our version of Groundhog Day, Burning of the

Witches-a final farewell to winter, St. Nicholas-an exciting holiday for children that reminds us the Christmas is not far off.• Education-Elementary school lasts 9 years, after this the education

African American• Food-greens, friend chicken, mac n cheese, fried okra, watermelon• Celebrations-Kwanzaa, Rosa Parks Day, MLK Jr B. Day, Juneteenth• Education-Before 1800 there was little to no schooling for African

American’s. After it was very sporadic until 1865 when the Freedman’s Bureau was created to develop an education system for the United States. Separate but equal was in place until segregation ended in 1954 with Brown v. Board of Education.• Area settled-East to southern TX.

French• Food-wine, cheese, croissants, crepes• Celebration-Good Friday, Easter, Ascension Day, St. Stephen’s Day.• Education-The same as to what’s here in America except for High

School. France has 2 options one for students intending to go to college and one for students intending to go into clerical or manual jobs• Area settled-Castroville, D’Hanis, Vandenburg

Irish• Foods-corned beef & cabbage, beer, black pudding, coddle• Celebrations-St. Patrick’s Day, Christmas, Bloomsday, International

Oyster Festival• Education-Similar to that of the U.S. except the final 2 years (16-18)
