Practice Prompt Steve Jobs, former Apple CEO and co-founder, said, “It is piracy, not overt online music stores, which is our main competitor.” Charles Stross, British writer of Science Fiction, said, “Back before the internet we had a name for people who bought a single copy of our books and lent them to all their friends without charging: we called them ‘librarians.’” Think about the issue of internet piracy. Write an essay in which you argue whether or not more stringent laws should be enforced for those guilty of illegally downloading others’ works. Take into consideration the various forms of piracy (music, books, DVDs, etc.) in addition to the two quotes above that show very different views of the issue. Use appropriate evidence from your reading, experience, or observations to support your argument.

How to Flee Map this prompt: HOOK + SUMMARY + THESIS

RESTATE THESIS + SUMMARY + CLINCHER

FALL BREAK HOMEWORK

• Gather FIVE advertisements related to one product of your choice. You need physical copies for class the day we return from fall break. (Physical copies could mean cut out of a magazine, printed from the internet, etc.).

• Briefly research the background of the company so that you know the company’s philosophies and goals. Bring in a printout of the research you have done (or at least a screen shot on your phone so you can refer to it as needed).

• If you don’t bring your own, you will be forced to complete this entire project with assigned advertisements. That’s no fun!

• When we return from break, you will be analyzing the persuasive appeals (pathos, logos, and ethos) used by the company within the advertisements. You will need to synthesize evidence from the ads to support your analysis of the use of rhetorical appeals.
