I created this second iteration of the time machine with Doug Hanks and Kenny Malone. It printed in the Business Monday section of The Miami Herald on Monday, July 18, 2011. One of the main objectives for this graphic was to illustrate the complex idea of shifting economic indicators to readers in a less daunting visual format. The first Time Machine graphic was very data-dense, and a bit daunting to read. With this version, we took the basic idea of a scatter plot, and visualized it as a highway; complete with fast lanes and slow lanes. In addition, we narrowed down the dozens of indicators used in the first version to 18, not including a general indicator for South Florida's economy.
