Petition no 1113/2014 Petition Summary The petitioner argues that the current diverging practices on the identification of human remains cause inefficiencies and delays in identification procedures. Whereas, according to Interpol standards, DNA, fingerprints and dental data should be used to identify human remains accurately, dental assessments are frequently overlooked as the focus is usually the cause of death. As a result of this incomplete data, it may be necessary to exhume the remains to identify the person and many persons (870 in Italy) remain unidentified. The petitioner therefore argues that a harmonised EU approach on human identification - following the work of the Interpol Disaster Victim Identification committee - should include a mandatory dental autopsy. He also proposes that post-mortem data should be recorded to enable comparison and matching in cross-border cases.
