‘’Applying to study at LSBU was an easy decision, and it’s also turned out to be the best one I ever made. The location was ideal for me and the course was just what I was looking for.

From the moment I arrived I felt welcome, the lecturers treated me like a colleague rather than a student.

The quality of the teaching is excellent and I have been able to gain a position as a research assistant to one of the lecturers in the School; this has given me great insight into the area I want to work in when I graduate. We also regularly have guest lecturers and psychology alumni visit us at the University to give us advice on how to succeed in the future. I’m so glad I chose LSBU; it has helped me realise my dream.”

Edit volunteered as a Research Assistant for two years – working with a number of academics within the Psychology division. Since graduating, she would love to move onto a PhD. She hopes to pursue a career as a researcher in the cognitive field of psychology.

Ines knew that she wanted to live and study somewhere near to lots of cultural opportunities, and an Open Day at LSBU confirmed that decision. “After I saw the facilities here and spoke to the Course Director, I knew I was in the right place,” she says.

About to start her third year, Ines knows studying in London and at LSBU was the perfect choice for her. The eclectic and cosmopolitan setting of LSBU is ideal for creative students, in Ines’ opinion. “LSBU is open to every culture, every age, and every area of study,” she says. “The university is really committed to helping us to become what we want to be, but that isn’t just an attitude it projects onto the students – it is one that the university takes very seriously and applies to itself too, I honestly can’t imagine myself studying anywhere else.”

Ines hopes to have her work published in the future, but the practical and focused nature of the degree means that she is also perfectly placed to pursue other employment opportunities in the publishing world. “I’m hoping to find a job in a publishing house when I graduate,” she says. “LSBU has really helped me to develop my writing and critical skills on a daily basis, so I feel really well prepared for the future.”

The Built Environment and Architecture

School of

Major developments in London have shaped the face of the city and our alumni have been involved in many of them – as project managers, structural engineers, quantity surveyors and architects. A significant number of the industry’s workforce and decision-makers are LSBU graduates.

Our academic staff contribute to the built environment communities, organisations, policy-

makers, and the professions within the UK and internationally. All our courses are developed in collaboration with industry professionals and in response to the needs of the sector. And our courses are accredited by the relevant professional institutions to the highest possible level.

We also teach across disciplines, reflecting the world of work. Architecture students work with surveyors and project managers, mirroring how design teams work in industry – and they work on the innovations that will be required in the future.

It’s important to us that our research is highly relevant to our teaching. Businesses and organisations come to us for our resources and expertise, tapping into our technological know-how through knowledge transfer partnerships. For example, we are currently developing, testing and implementing cooling strategies for London Underground. Our close connections with employers and industry bodies also means that we are well placed to offer apprenticeships.

Professor Charles Egbu, Dean

Vice-President of the Chartered Institute of Buildings (CIOB), Prof. Egbu is an expert in construction project management.

Unique learning environment

In the School we offer extensive facilities for teaching and research. For example, the Centre for Efficient and Renewable Energy in Buildings (CEREB) provides a unique teaching, research and demonstration resource for the built environment, hosting a number of renewable and intelligent energy solutions. Specialist workshops and laboratories include the anechoic chamber (for environmental and building acoustic studies) and the Digital Architecture and Robotics lab. We have a well-equipped Building Information Modelling (BIM) centre, which offers a digital and integrated approach to managing and planning every aspect of the design process. As well as being an inspirational space, our architecture studio enjoys views of many of London’s landmark buildings.

Our graduates become

Architects; construction managers; project managers and consultants; property managers and surveyors; infrastructure engineers, maintenance engineers, structural engineers and building services contractors; specialists in sustainability, acoustics and transportation; researchers, innovators – and building professionals focused on meeting the sustainability challenges of the future.

Vanessa and Pantelis met while studying Architecture at LSBU, where sustainability became an integral part of their business, E+C Associates. ‘Sustainability played a huge role in our studies, for us, the idea of a sustainable design covers many things, including minimising the damage done to the environment,’ Vanessa says.

Recently, the pair completed a large project for a business moving to a new office. ‘In a big space, it’s a challenge to make the most of light, but we did so by using glass walls that made the most of the natural resource.’

More sustainable building projects are already in the pipeline. “We need to take care of Earth – it’s where we live and the reason we are alive,” says Pantelis. “We may only be a small cog in a massive machine, but every cog matters. After all, if we don’t take care of our own home, who will?”

Pantelis and Vanessa received business support from LSBU’s Graduate Entrepreneurship Scheme.

From an early age Martina has always been fascinated by languages. Determined to learn more about business and marketing she knew this would help her grow her translation and interpreting business. “I wanted to learn more about marketing because I felt it was absolutely crucial for my business and my development,” she says. “While some students come to university because they want a business, I wanted to come to LSBU because I had a business.”

Martina’s advice to students hoping to follow in her entrepreneurial footsteps is to make the most of LSBU’s focus on enterprise skills, and the services offered by the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Institute.

Martina credits LSBU with giving her the confidence and knowledge to trust herself and her skills, and is proud of the progress she has made. “I’d never presented in front of an audience before coming to LSBU, and now I’ve presented at one of the biggest language events in Europe – the Language Show in London”.

Engineers handle innovation on a daily basis. We’re constantly looking to make things cheaper, safer, faster, more integrated and more effective – that’s why both our teaching and research focus on finding commercial applications, as well as engineering skills.

In the School we prepare you for real engineering jobs through interdisciplinary

teaching. People don’t work in silos, so students shouldn’t learn in them. Our facilities allow you to mimic the processes undertaken by engineers in industry: from researching and testing new products through to considering how to make them commercially viable, how they could be implemented on an industrial scale, and modified and improved once they are in operation.

Our accredited courses will provide you with the skills for your future engineering career and give you the opportunity to reach chartered status. You’ll also be able to take advantage of our professional links with industry, network with guest lecturers, participate in field trips and secure industrial internships.

Our researchers have developed industrial and commercial products for some of today’s most exciting engineering areas. We’re one of the top 20 universities in the UK for engineering research and most of our work is rated internationally as excellent (REF 2014).

Shushma PatelI, Interim Dean

I came to college study a little late, so I felt that I had to work in order to support myself. My initial plan was to carry on doing that, but I began to realise I needed a degree to make real career progress, so I decided to apply to LSBU.

I actually carried out two internships with the help of LSBU – they really helped me to improve my CV and gave me vital experience that helped me secure my role with the NHS. The University gave me great opportunities with help for things like my CV, job hunting and internship opportunities.

Visiting the Students’ Union and the jobshop helped keep me updated with internship opportunities, and look for jobs in the right field. LSBU gives you great help, so be sure to make the most of it.”

Ali worked in retail while studying. Through studying his degree at LSBU and completing his internships, Ali managed to gain real world experience, helping him secure a role on the IT help desk in the NHS. He provides IT assistance to the Commissioning Support Units across Essex and in parts of London.

For Emma, the diverse student population provided at LSBU provided her with a great opportunity to meet new people and learn from them,

“Mixing with people from all over London, the UK and the world meant that the course took on a new meaning and the work we achieved was more in depth taking in each person’s view point.”

”The voluntary work and the placements that I undertook during the course made me the nurse I am today. The course placed us in various hospital and community settings to get a broad experience of what children’s nursing is really like.’

The great experiences she had at LSBU also allowed her to work with an organisation that works with schools in Nairobi.

“Porridge and Rice works with schools in the slums of Nairobi to enable them to get an education and get themselves out of poverty. The work always begins with a feeding programme and progresses through health programs, children’s rights and gender to sustainability. My first task was to make sure that the children were being given an adequate diet in the schools and rejig the quantities to balance it a little more.”

Emma is now working at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on the adolescent ward as a qualified nurse, and plans to continue her learning by studying mentoring here at LSBU, along with completing a course tropical disease to further the work that Porridge and Rice do.

With a clear idea of what she wanted from her future, Barbara chose the Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure Management course because “it fitted into my career path, and I knew it would challenge and stimulate me, and help me reach my potential in the industry.”

Barbara chose LSBU because “it’s a university located in the heart of the city and surrounded by thousands of opportunities, and one that accepts diversity. “The best thing about studying here is the passion and love of my lecturers; they stimulated me to the extent that I have never regretted, not for a single moment, the course I chose”.

Barbara is employed as a Student Ambassador for LSBU where she represents the university at events. “What I like about my job is that it gives me the opportunity to be in the midst of people all the time, interact with them and make use of my knowledge of the two modern languages I am fluent in. “My degree has helped me to become very business minded and I have many ideas. I observe and analyse situations much better”.

Like so many of our Arts students, one of the biggest factors in Alice Magagnin’s decision to study at LSBU was our central location. What really appealed to Alice was the chance to gain a wide variety of practical, hands-on skills as part of her studies. Alice also won the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship during her second year, which she used to help fund her overseas studies.

During her time at LSBU, Alice undertook a number of volunteer and internship opportunities including a start-up company called Images & Co, a communication and design company located in the Clarence Centre, LSBU’s start-up hub for our entrepreneurs. “After my semester abroad, I went back to them and I developed a project called Arts Directory in my final year for my degree”.

Alice is in no doubt about the benefits of work experience while studying. “It helped me to develop my professional skills but also my personal skills, such as team work, attention to detail and much more,” she says. “It also helped me to understand the importance of networking, especially in the creative industries.”

It is hard work that has paid off, with Alice due to start a Master’s degree at Oxford in September 2017. “I think LSBU has definitely helped me to achieve it”.

Disclaimer and acknowledgementsEvery effort has been made to ensure that the information in this prospectus is accurate, and all information is believed to be correct at the time of publication. Courses are, however, subject to change, and while it is expected that all the courses listed will be offered in 2016, we are unable to guarantee this. Please always check our main website course pages for the latest information before making an application. The relationship between the University and our students is a contractual one and this prospectus contains information which would be considered as part of our contract with you. The terms of this contract include the following, and your acceptance of a place is expressly subject to them.1. You will be required as a condition of enrolment to submit to, and

abide by, the University’s procedures, as amended from time to time by the Board of Governors and the Academic Board. These procedures include Academic Regulations, Tuition Fee Regulations and the Student Charter. You may view this in the regulations section of My LSBU: https://my.lsbu.ac.uk/my/applicant/contract. The University will use reasonable measures to deliver courses and programmes of study in accordance with the descriptions set out in this prospectus. However, this document is produced at the earliest possible date to provide maximum assistance to intending applicants.

2. It is inevitable that changes will occur between the date of printing and the start of the academic year to which it relates. Some changes may be due to resource constraints, others to staff changes or as knowledge in the discipline evolves. In the context of the provision of a diverse range of courses to a large number of students, the University therefore reserves the right to vary the contents and delivery of courses, to discontinue, merge or combine courses and to introduce new courses if such action is reasonably considered to be necessary by the University. In such cases, the University will use reasonable endeavours to provide a suitable alternative course. Such changes may occur either before or after admission.

3. The University does not accept responsibility, and expressly excludes liability, for any modification or cancellation of courses or timetabling constraints as set out in the preceding paragraphs.

4. The University undertakes to provide educational services. It does not, however, guarantee the provision of such services. Should industrial action or circumstances beyond the control of the University interfere with its ability to provide educational services, the University undertakes to use reasonable endeavours to minimise the resultant disruption to those services.

5. The University aims to offer students the maximum flexibility of study within the relevant regulations and the academic timetable is drawn up with this objective in mind. However, no timetable can guarantee that all modules advertised will be available to all students who are qualified to take them.
