Gas Boilers

Sale of gas boilers in April 2015 fell by 3.2% in comparison with April 2014.

Year-to-date sales are 7% lower than at this time last year, while sales on a moving annual basis are 5.9%

lower than last year.

Hot Water Storage Cylinders

Hot water storage cylinder sales in April 2015 were 15.25% higher than sales in April 2014. A decrease in the

sales of cylinders for renewable systems was offset by strong growth in the market for conventional cylinders.

Year-to-date cylinder sales are nearly 5% ahead of their 2014 mark.

Sales on a moving annual basis are 1% lower than in the previous year.

Radiators

Sales of radiators in April 2015 rose by 14% in comparison with April 2014.

Despite the monthly increase, 2015 has seen a slower start to the year than 2014; year-to-date sales are

1.9% lower than at this time last year.

Moving annual sales are marginally higher than in April 2015.

Solar Thermal Panels

Sales of solar thermal panels in April 2015 were 43% lower than in April 2014.

Sales for the year-to-date are 29% lower than at this point last year.

Smart Meter Installations

A total of 142,693 smart meters were installed in Quarter 4 of 2014.

Quarter 4’s figures bring the cumulative total of installed smart meters to 764,806. Of these, 452,860 are

electrical smart meters and 311,946 are gas meters.

2. Macroeconomic Statistics

Housing

Seasonally adjusted housing starts in England were estimated at 40,300 for Quarter 1 2015 – an

increase of 11% over Quarter 1 2014.

There were 34,040 (seasonally adjusted) house completions in England in Quarter 1 2015 – an

increase of 21% over Quarter 1 2014.

In April 2015, the price of the average UK house reached £193,048.

Price growth on annual basis was 5.2%, edging up from 5.1% in March.

In April 2015, there were a total of 97,020 property transactions – a decline of 5.6% in comparison

with April 2014.

Gross mortgage lending fell to £16 billion in April 2015, from £16.7 billion in April 2014.

Mortgage lending for the first third of 2015 is 4% lower than the equivalent period in 2014.

The UK Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index fell sharply to 54.2, from 57.8 in March.

Although business activity growth is at its lowest point for 22 months, the figure represents a solid overall pace of expansion. *A PMI value of more than 50 represents expansion of the sector, anything below 50 signifies a contraction.

Consumer Sector

UK consumer confidence remained unchanged at 4 in April, a significant rise from -3 in April 2014.

In April 2015, the value of retail sales grew by 1.8% annually (2.8% excluding fuel), while sales on a

monthly basis are 1.1% higher (0.9% excluding fuel) than in March 2015.

New car registrations continued to see annual growth in April 2015.

April’s figure of 185,778 registrations represented the 38th consecutive month of annual growth.

Inflation on an annual basis – as measured by the Consumer Price Index – fell to -0.1% in April.

As in previous months, suppressed food and fuel prices dragged down the overall level of inflation.

A fall in the price of travel services (air fares etc.) was the largest contributor to April’s negative

value.

Inflation – as measured by the Retail Price Index – stood at 0.9%.

Macroeconomic Indicators

GDP is estimated to have grown by 2.4% compared with Q1 2014. On a quarterly basis, GDP is

estimated to have increased by 0.3%.

Output in the services sector increased by 0.5% in Q1 2015. However, output in the other industrial

groupings fell – construction output fell by 1.6%, production by 0.1% and agriculture by 0.2%.

Unemployment fell to 5.5% in February 2015, a small fall from 5.6% in January.

The rate of economic inactivity remained at 22.1%.

UK national debt rose by 5.95% in the past 12 months, reaching £1.488 trillion at the end of April.

Net public debt as a percentage of GDP rose by 1.5 percentage points in the last 12 months,

reaching 80.4%.

Energy Prices

Domestic gas prices rose by 1.7% in real terms between Q4 2014 and Q3 2014.

Domestic electricity prices rose by 2.4% in this period.

Manufacturing Sector

“Factory gate inflation” (Producer Price Index Output) fell to -1.74% in the year to April.

Annual input price inflation remains strongly negative at -11.7%.

UK Manufacturing PMI fell to 51.9 in April, from a revised 54.0 in March.

The Eurozone manufacturing sector continued to expand for the 22nd consecutive month.

Eurozone PMI came in at 52.0 in April 2015, a decrease of 1.4 points compared with April 2014.

3. Government Scheme Statistics

Non-Domestic RHI Applications

The Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a Government environmental programme that

provides financial incentives to increase the uptake of renewable heat for non-domestic purposes.

Following a tariff reduction in April, the number of non-domestic RHI applications fell by 94%

compared with March.

As of 30th April 2015, a total of 13,111 applications had been made to join the scheme.

Domestic RHI Applications

The Domestic RHI is a Government environmental programme that promotes the use of renewable heat for

domestic purposes.

Aggregate monthly Domestic RHI applications fell in April 2015. 3,601 applications (for both new

and legacy installations) were made in April, compared with 8,539 in March.

In total, 40,308 applications have been made under the domestic RHI scheme.

Boiler Installations

Compared with March, April saw a 12% rise in the number of boilers installed through Green Deal

Finance.

The number of boilers installed through the ECO* scheme rose by 15%.

*Measures installed through ECO are reported at a lag of one month compared to other figures, due to the

increased reporting and verification time.

Boilers and photovoltaics (included within the Micro-generation figure) accounted for nearly two-

Green Deal Assessments and Plans

The cumulative number of Green Deal Assessments reached 545,804 in April 2015.

The 16,439 GD Assessments in April represented a decrease of 40% in comparison with March.

At the end of April 2015, there were a total of 13,355 Green Deal plans in the system, an increase of

10.6% over March.

Of these plans, 22% are in their first stage (“New Plans” – quote accepted), 19% are in the second

stage (“Pending Plans – Plan signed) and the remaining 59% are in the final stage (“Live Plans” –

all measures installed).

Feed-in Tariff Installations

The number of Feed-in Tariff commissioned installations reached 693,302 in April 2015.

There were a total of 10,791 new installations in April. All except two of these were solar PV

installations.

Of the cumulative installed capacity, 84% is accounted for by PV installations and 11% by wind.

4. Regional Housing Statistics

Regional House Prices

House price growth in London and surrounding areas continued to outpace growth in other areas of

the country.

London saw annual house price growth of 13%, while prices in the Outer Metropolitan and Outer

South-East areas grew by 12% and 8% respectively.

House prices in Wales fell in comparison with Q1 2014, while price growth in Yorkshire and

Scotland fell to 1%.

Regional Housing Starts and Completions

In Q1 2015, the number of housing starts grew in 19 of the 39 regions.

The Black Country (61%), Enterprise M3 (Hampshire and Surrey – 68%) displayed the highest

growth since Q1 2015.

In the 19 regions where the number of starts fell, the effect was most pronounced in York and North

Yorkshire (-60%) and Leeds City Region (-57%).

The number of quarterly housing completions grew annually in 31 of the 39 regions listed.

Growth was strongest in Oxfordshire (90%) and Buckinghamshire Thames Valley (210%).
