From the Pastor

Dear Friends,

Throughout history religion has been criticized for promising unrealistic visions, for promoting illusions as reality and for enslaving people’s minds rather than freeing them. Many religious people react defensively against these criticisms. These criticisms are generalizations that come from the experiences and observations of those that pro-mote them. As generalizations go these criticisms need to be taken with a grain of salt, but not wholly discarded as unjust and unreasonable. In today’s first reading we are presented with a vision from the prophet Isaiah: “Justice shall be the band around his waist, and faithfulness a belt upon his hips. Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; the calf and the young lion shall browse together, with a little child to guide them. The cow and the bear shall be neighbors…There shall be no harm or ruin on all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be filled with knowledge of the Lord.” What are we to make of this vision from Isaiah? Some would say that this vision is of heaven, but biblical scholars easily discard this. This vision is for this world. Than we must ask: is this vision realistic? Should we hang all our hopes in such a vision? When we look at Jesus in the gos-pels he seems to live his life by this vision. Truly, the fact that Jesus adopts this vision for himself is at the heart of why he continuous to attract so many to himself and to the vision of God’s Kingdom. Jesus’ response to hatred, vio-lence, and divisions still manages to challenge our imagina-tion to what is possible. Jesus still manages to challenge us to not reduce ourselves to our lowest aspirations, but rather to rise to the potential for greatness that God sees and loves in us, his son and daughters. There is a sense of freshness in the way Jesus moves, acts, loves and relates to people in the gospels. His sense of freedom awakens within us something that seems to be asleep. We recognize it be-cause we instinctively desire it and long for it. Jesus models the vision of God’s Kingdom. He lives his life in service of the Kingdom. He confronted all that opposed this vision of the Kingdom with the conviction that love, mercy and compassion would conquer all. “Not by appearance shall he judge, nor by the hearsay shall he decide,” but by the vision of God’s Kingdom. For Jesus the vision of God’s Kingdom is not an unrealistic vision, nor an illusion. This vision does not enslave him, but ra-ther frees him to give of himself totally and without reserve to God and to others. It is his “yes” to God’s Kingdom in freedom that awakens within us the desire to follow him and to adopt for ourselves this vision. In this second Sun-day of Advent we are invited to renew this desire for God’s Kingdom. May the birth of the new born King awaken within us the life of the Kingdom already in our midst.

Fr. Tony Diaz, Pastor

Queridos Amigos

FORMATION CORNER – THOUGHTS TO PONDER, WAYS TO LIVE

“The wolf shall lie down with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them.” -Isaiah 11:6

BEFRIEND YOUR ENEMIES

When I watch children play, I realize that their world is often predisposed to conflict. Their action figures come complete with weapons, as if battle is a foregone conclusion in life. The “good guys” and “bad guys” are sometimes predetermined at the factory. The heroes arrive with pleasant smiles on their faces, while the villains are painted with furrowed brows or wicked grins. But we know that in real life character is not so clearly identified. Some of the people who act bad are sometimes physically beautiful. And how many times do we witness people turn away from a bedraggled, dirty homeless person afraid they are criminal in nature? So first, we are challenged not to judge one another by outward appearances. And second, we are called to love our enemies. WHAT?! How can we love someone who is against us? Who might ac-tively want to harm us? Remember the Star Wars movie, “Return of the Jedi?” Luke Skywalker refuses to fight his sworn enemy, Darth Vader, and instead redeems him by refusing to hurt him, and Darth Vader is given the opportunity to draw on the good buried deep inside him. By showing love for our enemies first, we may give them just the needed example and opportunity to discover the good in themselves that they may have believed was gone for good. We are now begin-ning our second week of Advent, and Advent is a time that suggests the shocking possibility that enemies, even natural enemies like the lion and the lamb, can dwell together in peace. Christmas teaches us that humans are not born enemies, but have the power of free will to not only live peaceably in God’s kingdom, but to create a kingdom of God that is peace-ful and loving for all. Let us pray that grace of this Advent season helps us to see the goodness in others and the faults in ourselves. May we build God’s kingdom where all creatures dwell in harmony.

Join us in our 6th year of supporting our sister church, St. Anthony Claret of Fresno in reaching out to the campes-inos outside of Fresno. These dedicated agriculture workers often need basic items such as jackets, socks, and hats. Take an “ornament” from the tree in ei-ther the Mission or the Chapel and return your gift, with “ornament” attached, by Sunday, December 25. Together we can help. —————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

San Gabriel Mission Elementary School Historic Groundbreaking for TK/Kindergarten Play Area

On Tuesday, December 6, 2016, San Gabriel Mission Elementary School will host a Groundbreaking Ceremony for its new Transitional Kindergarten/Kindergarten Play Area with The Most Reverend Bishop David O’Connell presiding over the event. This historic build will provide a dedicated area with play equipment and a play structure that is best suited for our four and five-year old students. The new play area site is located on Santa Anita Street between the Adobe House and Mission High School. We are most grateful to our donors for their generosity and also to our parish community for your continued support and prayers.
