Dear Friends,
One constant refrain that we say about ourselves as Catholics is that we are a Eucharistic centered church. While this is true, what we tend to emphasize in this state-ment is the priestly element: that without priests we cannot have the Eucharist. What is usually not emphasized in this statement is that to be a Eucharistic community means to be Christ centered. To have the courage to receive Holy Communion means to enter into communion with the Ris-en Lord and with the community of which we are part of. However, receiving Holy Communion has become for many a personal devotion that has nothing to do neither with the Risen Lord nor with the people around us. We come to Mass in our own personal bubbles and we leave without having been touched, moved or challenged by the “Holy Communion” of the Risen Lord in the brothers and sisters sitting around us. What does it mean to be a commu-nity if I do not even know or care to know the people sit-ting next to me at mass? This Sunday we celebrate the solemnity of Corpus Christi: the Body and Blood of Christ. Holy Communion is not an object or thing that we receive, but rather the offer of communion with the Risen Lord. We receive a relation-ship, rather than a thing. To receive the Body of Christ implies receiving the fullness of His life; to be challenged and transformed by his life, teachings and commandments. The other side of this communion with the Risen Lord is that it demands communion with the people around us. To have communion among ourselves means to be willing to be touched, challenged and transformed by the lives, needs and concerns of the people around us. To be in commun-ion is to form community and a community cannot exist without the relationships among us. We affirm the “real” presence of Christ in the Holy Eu-charist, for this is in fact what we believe. The Eucharist is the “real” presence and not merely a symbol. However, there is another step that must follow this affirmation. The affirmation, recognition, and acceptance of the “real” pres-ence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist must also move us to the affirmation, recognition, and acceptance of the other “real” presence of the Risen Lord in the people around us. The Holy Eucharist cannot merely be or remain a personal devotion; it has to bring us into communion with one an-other to form community through concrete relationships.

Algo que repetimos constantemente como Católicos es que somos una Iglesia centrada en la Eucaristía. Aunque esto es verdad, el énfasis en esta afirmación es en el sacer-docio: que sin el sacerdote no tendríamos la Eucaristía. Lo que muy poco se menciona en esta afirmación es que ser una comunidad eucarística significa ser una comunidad centrada en Cristo Resucitado. Tener el valor para recibir la Sagrada Eucaristía implica entrar en comunión con el Cristo Resucitado y con la comunidad de la cual somos par-te. Sin embargo, recibir la Eucaristía se ha convertido para muchos en una devoción personal que tiene muy poco que ver con el Cristo Resucitado o con la gente en nuestra co-munidad. Venimos a Misa en una burbuja personal sin ser tocados, retados o impactados por la “Sagrada Comunión” del Cristo Resucitado presente en los hermanos (as) con quienes compartimos la Misa. ¿Qué significa ser comuni-dad si no conocemos ni tenemos interés en conocer con los que compartimos la Misa? Este domingo celebramos la solemnidad de Corpus Cristi: el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo. La Sagrada Comu-nión no es un objeto o cosa que recibimos, sino una comu-nión que el Cristo Resucitado nos ofrece. Es una relación lo que recibimos y no una cosa. Recibir el Cuerpo de Cris-to implica recibir la plenitud de su vida; ser transformado y retado por su vida, mandamientos y enseñanzas. La otra exigencia de esta comunión con el Cristo Resucitado es que demanda una comunión con nuestra comunidad. Entrar en comunión en la comunidad implica dejarse impactar, retar y transformar por las vidas, necesidades y preocupaciones de la gente que son parte de nuestra comunidad. Estar en co-munión es formar comunidad y la comunidad no puede existir si no hay relaciones entre nosotros. Afirmamos la presencia “real” de Cristo en la Sagrada Eucaristía, esta es nuestra profesión de fe. La Eucaristía es presencia “real” y no simplemente un símbolo. Sin embar-go, esta afirmación requiere dar otro paso. La afirmación, reconocimiento y aceptación de la presencia “real” de Cris-to en la Sagrada Eucaristía tiene que llevarnos a afirmar, reconocer y aceptar la otra presencia “real” de Cristo en los hermanos (as) con quien estamos en comunidad. La Sagra-da Eucaristía no puede permanecer solo como una devoción personal, nos tiene que llevar a entrar en comunión con otros para formar comunidad por medio de nuestras relacio-nes y diálogos.

Presence with a Purpose (reflection by Rev. Mark R. Francis, CSV)
A survey done in 1994 by the New York Times polled Catholics on their understanding and practice of the faith. Bishops around the US were alarmed. The survey seemed to indicate that a relatively large percentage of Catholics no longer believed in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. A follow up poll, however, showed that the respondents didn't understand the way the survey posed the question. While the majority of Catholics might not be able to explain the technical term "transubstantiation" used by the Council of Trent to describe how the bread and wine is changed into the body and blood of Christ at Mass, the vast majority of Cath-olics still believed in the real presence-much to the relief of the bishops. After all, belief in Christ's presence in the bread and wine consecrated during the Mass has long been a key tenant of Catholicism. Today's Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, which dates from the 13th Century, invites us to contemplate this presence. Appreciating the full context of our second reading today from St. Paul's first letter to the Corinthians helps us to understand that affirming Christ's real presence in the Eucharist necessarily in-volves believing that this presence has a purpose.
St. Paul's description of the institution of the Eucharist (1 Cor 11:23-26) comes in the middle of his criticism of the way the Co-rinthians are holding the Lord's Supper. It was normal practice for small Christian communities, meeting in homes, to celebrate the Eucharist in the context of a full evening meal (much like the Jewish Passover is still celebrated). Toward the end of the meal the bread and wine would be shared by all, remembering Jesus' words at the Last Supper that this be done in memory of him. Paul, though, points out a problem in Corinth. The wealthier members of the community were arriving early with their own food and were not sharing what they had with the poorer members of the church. "For when the time comes to eat, each of you goes ahead with your own supper, and one goes hungry and another becomes drunk." (1 Cor 11:21). Paul describes this behavior as a lack of "discerning the body (of Christ)" (1 Cor 11:29).
For Paul and for the early Church fathers the sacramental body of Christ in the bread and wine is directly related to the people gathered in Christ's name. To most fully "discern the body" means going beyond the affirmation of the real presence of Christ in the Eucharistic elements. It is to realize that those gathered around the altar, with all of their imperfection and failure, are also a sign of Christ's presence. The reason we celebrate Mass is not only to acknowledge Christ's presence in the bread and wine, but to carry that presence-individually and as a community-into the world. As Pope St. Leo the Great succinctly stated in the fifth century: "For the effect of our sharing in the body and blood of Christ is to change us into what we receive." To believe in the presence of Christ in the Eucharist is also to be challenged to see Christ's presence "in the least of our brethren" and to become ourselves Christ's lov-ing, healing, and reconciling presence in the world. The presence has a purpose.

San Gabriel Mission Elementary School Transitional Kindergarteners Learn How To Mail A Letter
In an age of digital technology and electronic email, our Transitional Kin-dergarten teacher gave a lesson on what it is like to actually “mail a letter.” TK students wrote a letter to their fami-lies, addressed an envelope, put a stamp on it, and walked as a class to the mailbox to send off their corre-spondence. Mrs. Breitschwerdt, our TK teacher, commented that the stu-dents were so excited to learn about the postal system and it served as a lesson in social studies. Our TK stu-dents not only learn essential pre-literacy, pre-math, and other cognitive skills, but they learn social and emo-tional experiences such as mailing a letter and that helps to prepare them for Kindergarten.

These exceptional young ladies have ended their journeys here at Mission but we look forward to the amazing accomplish-ments still to come. Each year SGMHS’ graduating class boasts a strong number of 4-year college acceptances. This year is no different with a rate of 95%.
