ASCESION OF THE LORD LETTER FROM THE PASTOR PAGE THREE

Queridos Amigos,

P. Tony Diaz, CMF Parroco

Dear Friends,

This Sunday we celebrate the solemnity of the Ascen-sion. Where did Jesus ascend to, to heaven? Where is heaven, above Palestine? When astronauts first went into space one the questions they were asked was: did you see God? John Paul II reminded us that heaven is not a place, but a state of relationships with God, others, oneself and everything that exists. And this relationship is founded on a concrete experience of the Risen Lord. In today’s second reading St. Paul summarizes this experience this way: “May the eyes of your hearts be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope that belongs to his call, what are the riches of glory in his inheritance among the holy ones, and what is the surpassing greatness of his power for in who believe.” We are accustomed to think of time in linear form and so we think that we enter heaven to be with God only after we die. Is that what we celebrate in our faith? Do we not experience and live in relationship with God in the here and now? Do we not experience a taste of heaven in the here and now when we live in right and intimate relation-ships with God, others, ourselves and with everything that exists? Do we not experience hell as well in the here and now when we chose to live in relationships that promote anger, hatred, bitterness, violence, injustice, and division? In his life, death and resurrection Jesus lived in right and intimate relationship with God, others, himself, and every-thing that existed. His ascension is the glorification of that relationship and his exultation to the side of the Father. Contemplatives and mystics remind us that to live in heav-en or hell is a constant choice that we make. Others may try to push us into hell by the way they treat and relate to us, just like Jesus was in the way he was treated, but even then he opted to respond from right relationship. He chose to respond from his dignity and identity as a beloved son of God. That is also your dignity and identity and the choice to live and act out of? The Lord has promised to remain with us: “I am with you always, until the end of the age.” How do you envision this promise? Do you live with a sense of being accounta-ble to the Lord who is with us? Not only after you die, but today, here and now. Or does His promise to remain with us make any difference in the way you live your life? Fr. Tony Diaz, CMF Pasotr

FAITH FORMATION CORNER – THOUGHTS TO PONDER, WAYS TO LIVE

"Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the lord has promised to those who love Him.” (James 1:12)

BLESSINGS FROM TRIALS

I remember going to school and loving certain classes. The subject matter thrilled me and the lessons were easier be-cause my interest was so high and I was excited to learn. There were also other classes that I enjoyed less and it was reflected in the struggle I had to learn the subject matter. Still, I look back and see that those classes that I struggled with taught me so many important lessons that I didn’t learn from the classes I enjoyed. The challenging classes helped shape me just as much and in ways I had no idea were possible at the time. So, it occurs to me that life can be viewed as a series of fun classes and tough classes, and those who strive to get good grades in both are truly blessed. Those who see the good in everything, who turn negative into positive, and who help others around them do the same are truly blessed. Let us ask God to help us become people like that, bright and shining lights to those we love and to everyone we meet. Let us also pray for guidance and wisdom so that we can serve as an example of someone who finds the glass half full – never half empty – and who learns from the trials of life. We can thank the Lord for our trials, for they have made us who we are today, and without them we would not be able to be of service to those around us. For all that you have made me, Lord, and for all that you have asked me to live through, I am grateful. Amen.

FAITH FORMATION NEWS An Important Reminder: “It is above all in the home that before a word is spoken, children should experience God’s love in the LOVE which surrounds them. In the family they learn that God wants PEACE and mutual understanding among all human beings, who are called to be one great FAMILY.” St. John Paul II Catechists Needed! We are in need of catechists for our Sunday morning Confir-mation program and our Saturday morning and Tuesday evening elementary pro-grams. If you have the spirit, we will give you the tools. Come and experience the joy of sharing faith with the youth of our parish. Congratulations to our newly Confirmed Adults

May is Foster Care Awareness Month

Every child deserves a loving family to nurture and support that child to his or her full potential. Los Angeles County has the most children in foster care in the country. And right now, DCFS faces a short-age of foster parents. They especially need emergency foster parents who can care for a child up to 30 days, es-pecially for infants under the age of 2, sibling groups, and older foster youth. As youth age out of foster care without a family, 30% will become homeless and 20% will be incarcerated, while 70% of trafficked youth come from the foster care system. These young people need the security and stabil-ity of a family to help them succeed in school and in life. You can help. By helping a child find a loving foster or adop-tive family, you are investing in the life of that child and helping him or her have a better future! San Gabriel Mission Elementary School Students Send Mummies Into The “Afterlife”

When we last le our 6th grade students, they were working on the mummifica on process of two chickens, King Cluck-mose III & Cluckopatra. During this 5-week process, students completed weekly changing of the salt, recorded the chickens' weight loss, as well as the texture of the bodies. The students then rinsed the chickens, covered the chickens with oil and spices and wrapped it with muslin, and ended with pu ng them into their own Sarcophagus (or as we know it, tomb). A burial procession took place with the 6th and 7th grade students present, and finally King Cluckmose III & Cluckopatra were sent into the “a erlife." What a great cross-sec onal lesson for our students who learned about science and the cultural

burial tradi ons of Ancient Egypt.
