TODAY’S READINGS — Third Sunday of Easter
First Reading — All who believed were devoted to the teachings of the apostles, the communal life, the breaking of the bread, and prayer (Acts 2:42-47). Psalm — Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting (Psalm 118). Second Reading — God has given us an undiminished inheritance, safe-guarded for us in heaven (1 Peter 1:3-9). Gospel — The risen Christ comes to his disciples with peace and the Spirit. The absent Thomas doubts (John 20:19-31).

Due to circumstances beyond our control, the “Build The Dreams” Scholarship Organizing Committee has decided to postpone our annual event which was sched-uled for May 25, 2017 at the San Gabriel Mission Histor-ical Garden. Our mission will continue to be focused on at risk stu-dents. Over the last four years, we have distributed $100,000 in scholarships to 104 deserving students in our community. We want to thank all the supporters who have contributed to our mission and who have helped our students pursue their dreams of a higher education.

Dear Friends,
In today’s gospel we have the beautiful Emmaus resurrection narrative. Common to all the narratives of the resurrection is that the Risen Lord is both not recognized and recognized by his disciples; He is the same and yet not the same. What pre-vented them from recognizing the Risen Lord? The Em-maus story has many details that explain why the disciples did not recognize him in which we can easily see our-selves. All of the resurrection stories in Luke take place in and around Jerusalem, but they are walking away from it. The disciples are sad, hopeless and lost. Jesus meets them on the way, on the road. The ‘way’ or ‘road’ is a metaphor for life. Is it not there also where Jesus comes to meet us: on the road of our lives. The sadness, hopelessness and confusion of the events prevent the disciples from recog-nizing the Risen Lord. How true is this also for us, when we cannot see past our problems, concerns and hopeless-ness. The Risen Lord engages them in conversation and the more the disciples talk the more they reveal their blind-ness. “But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel.” The redemption that they were hoping for in Jesus was political. They expected Jesus, the prophet, not the Messiah, to deliver Israel from the power of the Roman Empire. Their plans and expectations died and were buried with Jesus. Is this not also true with us? Our expectations of God, of others and of life itself prevent us from seen what God, others and life offers us in the here and now. We reduce God and others to our expectations and if they do not measure up to those expectations, then we will never see and appreciate what they do offer. The liberation that God offers us in and through Christ is much more radical and dangerous than political liberation. A number of things take place in the story of Emmaus. There is a journey and movement. There is an encounter with a stranger, with the unfamiliar. There is conversation and discussion about Scripture. There is hospitality, a sa-cred tradition greatly lost in our culture. There is a meal and ritual, and most likely singing as well. In and through all of these actions the Risen Lord helps his disciples to see beyond their sadness and hopelessness; he breaks open the Scriptures and tears down their expectations. In the midst of hospitality, ritual (breaking of the bread) and singing; their eyes, hearts and minds are opened. They finally rec-ognized the Risen Lord. At that moment their sadness and hopelessness is turned to joy. They cannot remain in Em-maus; they have to return to Jerusalem, the climax of Je-sus’ life; now the Christ, who is beyond space and time, is present to us today as well. We are not so different from the disciples of Emmaus; we are as self-consumed as they were. Yet, the Risen Lord still comes to us; do you recog-nize Him?

En el evangelio de hoy tenemos la bella narra-tiva de la resurrección en Emaús. Común a todas las narrativas de la resurrección de Cristo resuci-tado es que es y no es reconocido por sus discípu-
los; es el mismo y a la vez no es el mismo. ¿Qué prevenía a los discípulos de reconocer al Cristo resucitado? La escena de Emaús tiene muchos detalles que explican por qué los discípulos no lo reconocían y en las cuales también nosotros podemos vernos. Todas las escenas de la resurrección en Lucas toman lugar en los entornos de Jerusalén, pero estos discípulos se alejan de Jerusalén. Los discípulos están tris-tes, sin esperanzas y confusos. Jesús viene al encuentro de ellos en el camino. El camino es una metáfora para la vida. Es en el camino de nuestras vidas donde Jesús viene a nues-tro encuentro. La tristeza, desesperanza y confusión de los eventos recientes previenen a los discípulos de reconocer al Señor. ¿No es acaso también verdad en nuestras vidas cuan-do no podemos ver más allá de nuestros problemas, preocu-paciones y desesperanza? El Cristo resucitado entra en conversación con ellos y mientras más hablan ellos, mas revelan lo ciego que están. “Nosotros esperábamos que el seria el libertador de Israel.” La redención que esperaban de Jesús era política. Esperaban que Jesús, el profeta, no el Mesías, liberara a Israel del poder del Imperio Romano. Sus planes y expectativas murieron y fueron enterradas junto con Jesús. ¿Acaso no es verdad tam-bién esto en nuestras vidas? Las expectativas que le impone-mos a Dios, a otros y a la vida misma nos previenen de ver lo que Dios, otros y la vida misma nos ofrecen en el presen-te. Reducimos a Dios y a otros a nuestras expectativas y si no miden según nuestras expectativas entonces nunca vere-mos y apreciaremos lo que nos ofrecen. La liberación que Dios nos ofrece en Cristo es mucho más radical y peligrosa que una liberación política. Un buen número de cosas ocurren en la escena de Emaús. Tenemos un viaje y movimiento. Tenemos un encuentro con un extraño, algo desconocido. Hay conversación y dialogo sobre sagrada Escritura. Hay también hospitalidad, algo que hemos perdido mucho en nuestra cultura. Tenemos una cena, ritual, y muy probable también canto y música. Y en medio de todo esto el Cristo resucitado ayuda a sus discípulos a ver más allá de su tristeza y desesperanza; les pone en claro la sagrada Escritura y les tira abajo sus expectativas. Por me-dio de la hospitalidad, ritual (el partir del pan) y canto; sus ojos, corazones y mente se abren. Por fin lo reconocen. En ese mismo momento sus tristezas y desesperanzas se con-vierten en gozo. No podían quedarse en Emaús. Inmediata-mente regresan a Jerusalén, punto central para Jesús, quien ahora es el Cristo más allá del tiempo y el espacio quien está presente a nosotros aun hoy en día. No somos mas diferentes que los discípulos de Emaús; también nosotros estamos con-sumidos y preocupados con nosotros mismos. Pero aun así, el Cristo resucitado viene a nosotros; ¿Lo reconoces?

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASSTER FAITH FORMATION UPDATES PAGE FIVE
In today’s Gospel, the absent Thomas could not bring himself to believe that Jesus had risen, he needed physical proof. After encountering Jesus a week later, he has unwavering belief. Do we believe? The risen Jesus is relentless in bringing us to the same passionate belief as the apostles. But Jesus’ resurrection asks more of us than just belief in Je-sus’ new life. Our belief is strengthened by our doing. The doing brings about shifts in our own self-understanding: we are members of the Body of Christ living with His risen Life coursing within us. The doing also brings about shifts in our own purpose in life: we now, through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, continue Jesus’ saving ministry. The strug-gle to believe is no less than the struggle to recognize and encounter the risen Jesus. This is really what our Christian life is all about – encountering Jesus in our own lives and sharing our lives and our experience of Jesus with others. It is in this way that doing strengthens our belief in the risen Lord.

Our Youth Ministry Music Program, the San Gabriel Mis-sion Marimba Ensemble is having a Used Item Collection Donation Drive as a fundraiser. You may bring your do-nations to the Rectory Office or to the 1 PM Spanish Mass on Sunday starting now. We will be collecting used items the next four weeks, and we have to fill 15 bins (a semi truck size) with used items. Donations should be packed in 13 gallon kitchen size plastic bags or in open boxes not weighing more that 25 lbs. For more in-formation or questions, please leave a message at the Rec-tory Office (626-457-3035) for the Marimba Team.

CENTENARY OF THE APARITIONS OF FATIMA
It should be common knowledge that the Virgen ap-peared to 3 shepherds in Fatima (Portugal,) on the 13th of May, 1917. This year we celebrate 100 years since that wonderful event. In preparation of the celebration we will have a Triduum on the 10,11 and 12th of May at the 6:30 PM Spanish Mass. On the 13th we will have a solemn trilingual Mass. We hope that you will spread the news to all of your friends, so that we may worthily celebrate the Visit from our Ce-lestial Mother. More details to come in the following weeks.

San Gabriel Mission Elementary School What can be learned when Science and History meet!
King Cluckmose III & Cluckopatra
Our 6th graders are currently learning about Ancient Egypt and mummies in their Social Studies class. Together with Ms. Nunez, what better way to set up a cross-curricular activity than by having students mummify chickens in Science class! Our students have begun a 5 week mummifying pro-cess of two chickens, King Cluckmose III & Cluckopatra. Follow along with us as we give updates during the mummification process, and end our project by sending our chicken mummies into their "afterlife."

SGMHS Easter Vaca on Trip to Germany, Austria and Switzerland
Each year, SGMHS students are given the oppor-tunity to travel abroad during the Easter Break. This school year, Dr. Sallo along with 8 students from SGMHS attended a 10 day trip to Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
During the trip, students visit historical monuments and are given the opportunity to explore the culture, language and history at the different locations. This year, SGMHS students were able to attend Easter Sunday Mass in Innsbruck, Austria. The mass was held in German and students were able to attend the special Liturgy on this Holy Day. Students were able to compare and contrast the mass and Cathe-dral to their experiences back home.
