SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME LETTER FROM THE PASTOR PAGE THREE This Sunday once again we are given three parables about the Kingdom of God (“Kingdom of Heaven” in Matthew”). These three parables give us some aspects of the Kingdom. The first two seem very similar in the use of the image of treas-ure for the Kingdom, but they do have a significant detail in how the Kingdom is revealed. The third parable about the fishing net catching different kinds of fish is very simi-lar in message to the parable we read last Sunday about the wheat and weeds. The use of the image of treasure by the first two para-bles is an image that is easily understood, even by us to-day: Who is not attracted to treasure? Who does not want to find a treasure? In the first parable a man finds a treas-ure in a field. Joyfully he sells everything he has in order to buy the field in which the treasure is buried. Such is the value of the treasure (the Kingdom) that he is willing to put everything else at the service of the Kingdom. The person in the second parable is a buyer of pearls. When he finds the most beautiful pearl (the Kingdom), he goes and sells everything he has in order to purchase the precious pearl. A key point is their willingness to do whatever it takes to acquire the treasure (the Kingdom). What about you, where do you stand in relationship to the Kingdom? Does the Kingdom question you? The difference in these two parables is that while in the first parable the person comes upon the treasure unexpectedly; in the second one the person is actively seeking it. This reveals how God’s Kingdom may come upon us. There are those who are surprised by the Kingdom, and those that know of it and actively seek it. The last parable is very similar in message to the para-ble of the wheat and feeds growing together in the field. In the third parable a fishing net is the image of the King-dom. The fishing net catches desirable and none derisible fish which are then sorted by the fishermen. They keep the ones they want and throw away the ones they reject. This sorting of the fish, as Jesus explains it represents the judg-ment day when the angels of God will sort out one from the other. The lesson for us is this: while the temptation to divide the world into good and evil is strong, that decision belongs to God alone. The world in which we live is messy and the temptation to reduce people to good and evil is not as clear cut as we might think. Furthermore, it is not just about being tolerant with each other, but to truly grow in wisdom and holiness in the manner that we threat and relate with one another. The people whom we are tempted to condemn and reject may truly be a blessing in helping us to grow beyond our preconceive notions and attitudes.

Nuevamente este domingo se nos dan tres parábolas sobre el Reino de Dios (Reino del Cielo en Mateo). Estas tres parábolas nos pre-
sentan algunos aspectos del Reino. Las primeras dos pará-bolas son muy similares en el uso de la imagen del tesoro para el Reino, pero también tienen una significante variante en cómo el Reino se revela. La tercera parábola usa la ima-gen de una red de pesca en la que hay diferentes peces reunidos. Esta parábola es similar en mensaje a la parábola del trigo y cizaña del domingo pasado. El uso de la imagen del tesoro en las primeras dos pará-bolas es una imagen fácil de apreciar, aun por nosotros hoy en día: ¿Quién no se siente atraído a un tesoro? ¿Quién no desea encontrar un tesoro? En la primera parábola un hom-bre encuentra un tesoro en un campo. Felizmente va y ven-de todo cuanto tiene para comprar el campo donde se en-cuentra el tesoro. Tal es el valor del tesoro (el Reino) que está dispuesto a poner todo al servicio del Reino. La perso-na en la segunda parábola es un comerciante de perlas. Cuando encuentra la perla más preciosa (el Reino) va y ven-de todo cuanto tiene para comprar la perla preciosa. El pun-to clave en estas dos parábolas es la disponibilidad de poner todo al servicio del Reino al adquirir el tesoro. Y tú qué ¿donde te encuentras en relación al Reino? ¿Te cuestiona el Reino? La diferencia en estas dos parábolas está en que en la primera la persona se topa con el tesoro sorpresivamente (¿accidentalmente?); mientras que en la segunda la persona va en busca del tesoro activamente. Esto nos revela cómo se nos presenta el Reino de Dios . Algunos e sorprenden por el Reino mientras que otros saben del Reino y lo buscan activamente . La última de las parábolas es similar en mensaje a la pa-rábola del trigo y cizaña que crecen juntas en el campo. En la tercera parábola la red de pesca representa al Reino. La red pesca peses deseables y no deseables los cuales son se-parados por los pescadores. Se quedan con los deseables y tiran el resto. La separación de los peces, como Jesús lo ex-plica, es el día del juicio cuando los ángeles de Dios separa-rán a unos de otros. La lección para nosotros es la siguiente: la tentación de dividir al mundo entre los buenos y los malos es grande, pero esta decisión le pertenece solo a Dios. El mundo en que vivimos es complicado y la tentación de re-ducir a la gente a buenos y malos no es tan clara como pare-ce. Además, no basta simplemente ser tolerante entre noso-tros, sino sinceramente buscar la sabiduría y santidad en la manera que nos tratamos. La tentación de condenar y recha-zar a ciertas personas puede en realidad ser una bendición en el sentido que nos fuerza a ir mas allá de nuestros prejui-cios y actitudes.

FAITH FORMATION CORNER – THOUGHTS TO PONDER, WAYS TO LIVE
“ The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in the field…and out of joy
goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” (Matthew 13:44)
SURPRISED BY JOY
Today’s gospel offers three short parables about how one attains not only happiness but the even deeper gift of last-ing joy. In the first, a person finds buried treasure. The digger in the field is likely a poor person, a day laborer, at the bottom of the social scale. The parable emphasizes how overjoyed he is at this unexpected find that will change his life and with reckless abandon he sells all he has in order to acquire the field with its treasure. The second parables takes us to the other end of the social spectrum. A merchant with fine pearls would have been a rich man. Merchants in scripture are generally depicted negatively as avaricious and corrupt. The surprise is that even such persons as this could come upon the reign of God and be moved to sell all they have for this pearl of great price. For those who are/were uncomfortable hearing that both a poor peasant and a rich merchant could be found in the kingdom of heaven, Je-sus then offers a third parable about a net that pulls in all kinds of fish, and asks disciples to suspend judgment about who is wicked and who is righteous, leaving the sorting to God’s angels at the end of the age. There is an element of surprise in each parable, whether concerning the manner of finding or who s to be found in God’s reign. A further surprise is that the resultant joy leads to giving up all else. It is a paradoxical path to happiness. When it finds you, any instinct to hoard this treasure evaporates; what surfaces instead is the desire to divest oneself of everything. The final surprise is that happiness in God’s reign cannot be bought or earned, it is a surprisingly free gift, attainable by all. While it cannot be bought it costs everything, but the price is a totally free self-surrender to irresistible joy.

SGMHS Junior Madeline Acosta was given the opportunity to participate in the Summer Engineer-ing Academy at University of Ari-zona where she learned about chemical engineering, material sci-ence and biomedical engineering. Madeline has always been interest-ed in the sciences with the hopes to pursue the premedical route in col-lege. Growing up, Madeline watched her mother go through multiple surgeries which made her decide that she wants to work in science and help in the medical field. Her ideal job is to earn a Ph.D. so she can do research and development. During the program, Madeline
was able to make a heart sensor monitor through wiring and programming to a pixel board. Madeline was trained in how to connect the wires, program the hardware and solder the materials through a hands on experience. She felt empow-ered to be a woman in the sciences as she was able to learn what she was capable of. She hopes to continue with a sum-mer internship next year.

There will be a Fiesta Volunteers Meeting at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, the 2nd of August 2017, in the Par-ish Center Auditorium. We ask all Fiesta Volunteers to attend this important, brief meeting or make other ar-rangements with the committee for an update and to receive paperwork.

FIESTA 2017 RAFFLE! This year, we feature a Fiesta Car. The Grand Prize is a 2017 Nissan Versa or $10,000 in cash. The winner of the top prize can choose between either prize. 2nd prize winner will receive $2,000 in cash, 3rd prize win-ner will receive $1,000 in cash, and 4th prize winner will receive $500 in cash. Official rules regarding tax-es and fees that apply to all winners are on our web-site. This endeavor can be successful only with your help and so we are counting on you to help us by sell-ing two (2) books of raffle tickets. Keep in mind that a prize of $200 is awarded to the person who sells the
most tickets, $100 for the second top seller, and $100 for the grand prize ticket seller. To be considered for top seller, please have all your ticket and money turned in by Thursday, August 31st. For each two (2) books of tickets you sell ($100), you can receive a Fi-esta t-shirt at the Fiesta (while supplies last). If you are a MES or MHS school parent, you can choose to earn service hours by checking the correct boxes on the return envelope. Please return ticket stubs and money to the Fiesta table outside of Sunday masses or the Rectory office.
FIESTA Scrip Tickets
Last year, we transitioned from cash to tickets (scrip) for the Fiesta. Scrip is a safe, sound alternative to using cash. The use of tickets removes the need to make change at each food, beverage and game booth, and it essentially speeds up the lines and cre-ate a more enjoyable experience for everyone. Pre-sale tickets are being sold at the schools, rectory and at a table outside of church after all the Masses.
Donations Needed Donations of paper plates, dispenser napkins, plastic forks/knives/spoons, paper towel rolls, paper/foam 8 oz. cups, and heavy-duty menudo bowls are especial-ly needed. They can be purchased by the case at Smart & Final, Costco, or Sam’s Club and dropped off at the Rectory Office. We also need heavy duty exten-sion cords, power strips, and bungee cords, new or used in good condition.
Fridges/Freezers and White Elephant Fiesta needs refrigerators and freezers in clean, good working condition. Our equipment supply is low. If you have an extra fridge or freezer, please donate to the Fiesta. Your donation will help us for many years, and you’ll receive a tax donation. Please call Xavier Vargas at 626-818-2357 if you can help. We need your knic-knacks, appliances, tools, books, household items, electronics, gift items, collectables, and other small goods for our White Elephant Booth. No clothes or shoes or junk please! You may leave your donation at the Rectory Office.
Volunteer Today We need your help for Fiesta. Please volunteer to help before, during, or after Fiesta Weekend. Help is needed for set up week, for grounds maintenance on the weekend, after closing with the Midnighters, and with the Sunday Night Team.
