FIFTHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME LETTER FROM THE PASTOR PAGE THREE

One important distinction that needs to be made when reading the gospels is this: who is Jesus addressing in the gospel and who is Mat-thew addressing? We may assume that the au-dience is the same, but they are not. Jesus is addressing mostly a Jewish audience. In this Jewish audience we find regular people as well as religious leaders like Pharisees, scribes and synagogue leaders. The audience of Matthew’s gospel is Christians: Jewish and non-Jewish Christians. The gospels were written for the use of the early Christian Church. So, this parable about the sower and the four kinds of soils is addressed to people within the Christian Church; it is about us and not those outside the Church. Today’s gospel is made up of three sections: the parable, an interlude and the explanation of the parable. Since Je-sus gives a clear explanation of the parable I would like to concentrate on the interlude. The interlude begins with the disciples asking Jesus why he speaks in parables. Jesus’ answer may seem odd. Why didn’t he speak more plainly so that everyone could understand? The problem was not in Jesus’ use of para-bles, but with the audience: their lack of willingness to hear the gospel. The same problem that Jesus encountered in his time we have today, even within the church: minds and hearts unwilling to hear and respond to the gospel. “They look and do not see; they hear, but they do not lis-ten or understand.” The key to understand why Jesus speaks in parables is in this quote from the prophet Isaiah: “Their ears hardly hear and their eyes dare not see. If they were to see with their eyes, hear with their ears and understand with their heart, they would turn back, and I would heal them.” Jesus is basically saying that the prob-lem is with us, in our unwillingness and lack of desire to hear, understand, accept and respond to what God is pro-posing. For Jesus to hear means to listen with an open mind and heart. To understand means to be willing to be ques-tioned and challenged by the gospel: to understand what one hears. To accept means to make the message your own; to take possession of it or rather, to allow the mes-sage to take possession of you. The last part is to respond to what one has heard, understood and accepted. This is where the first reading makes a lot of sense: “My word will not return to me idle, but it shall accomplish my will, the purpose for which it has been sent.” One can listen but not understand; one can understand without accepting; and one can accept without implementing. All four are neces-sary for conversion. So, where do you find yourself in these stages? What kind of soil are you? Is there a willing-ness and desire to receive and respond to the living word of God?

Fr. Tony Diaz, CMF Pastor

Finding the Time to Consider Gratitude

Recently, I’ve carved out the luxury of little bits of time, something that very recently either felt out of reach or that I did not stretch far enough to grasp. This newfound and hope-fully less fleeting joy has further afforded me the opportunity to reflect. Reflection, by the way, is a wonderful thing. Regardless of whether you are examining the “good” or the “bad”, pro-cessing is something we humans need to do. Each passing day reaffirms this more then the previous. Gratitude is not a time-intensive exercise. It’s a choice to allocate a slot of time however narrow to simply look around. So where did I find the time to reflect on gratitude? I made it. So what is gratitude, “Readiness to show appreciation for and to return “ kindness”, “Thankfulness” Gratitude, it appears, is an art. At its most basic, the definition of gratitude seems all about gifts and givers, about merit undeserved. Underneath this perspective is the idea that gratitude is about being thankful for something specific, to someone specific be they living or not. But it seems to me that the art of gratitude is about entire package of not just saying thank you to other people, but be-ing thankful for what is — stepping back for big things and small and appreciating the whole. Which raises a question: can you be grateful without uttering a word to another soul? I’d like to think so. But I will not fool you, or sell the effort of gratitude short. Gratitude takes some work. A life’s work, you might say. Practicing gratitude, it’s good for others too. Collateral bene-fit you might say. Even directionless, gratitude into the ether acts like a cosmic air freshener. Think about it as ammuni-tion in the battle against ill will. Gratitude lays a foundation for things like generosity, shar-ing, and contentment – and the continual learning and re-learning of what that means.

NATIONAL NEEDS COMBINED

Sharing the Good News...Your Generosity Next weekend we will be taking a second collection during all the Masses. Your generosity makes it pos-sible for us to continue strengthening catholic values throught the catholic communications campaign. It helps support the poorest dioceses in the country. It enables us to insure the highest standards of quality Catholic education and strengthen the church at home and helps provide resources to needy communities in scattered and isolated areas. Thank you for making a difference.
