FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT FROM THE PASTOR /CARTA DEL PARROCO PAGE THREE Dear Friends,

In the last two Sundays we have been reading from the reading cycle for catechumens: those that are going to be baptized at the Easter celebration. The gospel readings on the Samaritan woman at the well and the blind man that is healed by Jesus are all about the before and after Christ experiences: baptism. The Samaritan woman was lost and she was found; the man was blind and now he sees; and in today’s gospel Lazarus was dead and now he lives. Beyond the miracles of the blind man and Lazarus, and the saving experience of the Samaritan wom-an what these stories tell us is that the encounter with Jesus is supposed to move us into a relationship of faith and dis-cipleship with Jesus. Therefore, the catechumen are ac-companied and helped to see the death, blindness and darkness of their before Christ experience so that, by the grace and Spirit of God, they might move into the life and light of the after Christ experience. The emphasis is not on sinfulness for sinfulness sake, but rather on grace, new life and dignity that catechumens receive in and through Christ. But the gift that God offers in Christ cannot be ap-preciated without first recognizing from where and what God is saving them from. What about the rest of us that are not catechumens, what are we to take from these readings this Lenten sea-son? It is no different for us. The Lenten season is an invi-tation to renew our relationship with God. Perhaps the relationship with God has grown cold or the before and after Christ experience has never taken place. Wherever we find ourselves in our relationship with God our funda-mental call is the same as that of the catechumens: to iden-tify those areas in our lives where God is not yet present or where we do not allow him in. This is what Paul is talking about in the second reading: “Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.” Today’s first reading and gospel remind us that to be separated from God and Christ is death itself, spiritual death. Many of us live our lives not even aware of this living death. We have fallen into a state of spiritual medi-ocracy. We tell ourselves that we are not as bad as “those” others who are really bad sinners. Or we justify ourselves by thinking, “well, I do not kill, steal, or hate anyone; I go to mass and pray the rosary.” We reduce being a Christian to avoiding sin and fulfilling religious obligations. Christi-anity is not merely the avoidance of sin, but the practice of love, mercy, compassion and the justice of God. Avoiding sin is merely the beginning, the first step. We avoid sin because that is the nature of love, mercy and compassion. We will ultimately be judged by love. Rather than just giving up things during Lent, how about taking up the yoke of love, mercy and compassion!

Fr. Tony Diaz, CMF Pastor

Queridos Amigos,

Fr. Tony Diaz, CMF Parroco

Fifth Sunday of Lent FAITH FORMATION UPDATES April 2, 2017

Faith Formation Office: Gigi Galardi, Connie Perez, Georgina Mayorga 626-457-3041

FAITH FORMATION CORNER – THOUGHTS TO PONDER, WAYS TO LIVE

“Beloved...I now feel a need to write to encourage you to contend for the faith that was once for all handed down to the holy ones.” (Jude 3)

FAITH IS NOT A FAIRY TAIL

Humpty Dumpty once sat on the Wall of Faith. He could see things from a higher perspective. The Church and the faith handed on to him from his youth was a strong wall which was a rampart keeping out the attack of an atheistic sec-ular world. Humpty Dumpty sat on the Wall of Faith and knew a communion with God and with his holy ones, the saints in heaven, and those on earth who knew they were sinners striving to be saints. Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall; Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. He lost faith in God and in his Church; he lost his communion with God’s people, and became “scrambled egg” on the floor. All the king’s horses and all the king’s men couldn’t put Humpty Dumpty together again (not without faith). Sometimes the Lord allows us to fall off the wall. Sometimes the Lords allows us to lose our faith, so we may re-gain it again in a way we never knew before. We’re all Mr. or Ms. Dumpty whenever we fall into sin. All the king’s horses (money, celebrity, medicine, etc.) can’t “put us together again.” But Christ, our King, can and did! In Him we are made his “Beloved” by his grace. And so we may sit on the Wall of Faith again and again, and gaze upon the gate into Eternal Life. (Fr. Jacob Restrick, O.P.)

San Gabriel Mission Elementary School Girl Scout Troop 8451 Attends UCLA “I’m Going to College!” Fair

On Sunday, March 5, 2017, Mission’s Girl Scouts Troop 8451 attended the UCLA's “I'm Going to College!” Fair. The event began with morning games, the Scouts met with UCLA Athletes, were tak-en on a tour of the campus and ended up watching a Gymnastics Meet. It was a wonderful day for the girls! By providing these types of events, UCLA hopes to further illustrate the benefit of higher educa-tion and connect with students in an academic setting. By placing young students into a collegiate atmosphere that stresses the excellence of both education and athletics, UCLA hopes to build posi-tive relationships with young people in the community and motivate them to continue achieving goals in both school and life.
