BIOGRAPHICAL:Senator McCarthywas born on March29, 1916,Watkins, Minnesota;
graduated from St. John'sUniversity, Minnesota, in 1935; received the M. A.degree, University of Minnesota; taught social science in high school for five yearsand was professor of economics and education at St. John's University, 1940-42;was acting chairman of sociology department of St. Thomas College in 1946. Hewas elected to the 81st Congress in 1948and served in succeeding Congressesuntil elected to the Senate in November, 1958. He was re elected in November, 1964
INFORMATION INBUFILES:We have had several contacts with McCarthy since 1948,both as a
Congressman and as a Senator. Most of these have dealt with constituent-typeinquiries. Most inquiries have been handled by letters except those from indi-..viduals known as "crackpots" whereupon he has been advised orally.

While in the House of Representatives, he was one of the 17 members in the House who voted against the Jencks Bill onAugust 27, 1957.J encksBill dealt with production in court of FBI reports from informants and

InDecember, 1962, in response to a letter from McCarthy, theDirector declined to addressthe Minnesota Newspaper Association.
In May,1966, Senator McCarthy, .before the Senate Foreign RelatiCommittee, proposed a resolution establishing a "Senate committee to overseeactivities of the CIA and to additionally have jurisdiction over all of what is knownasintelligence community. The resolution would replace the informal "watchdoggroup" headed by SenatorRichard B. Russell, with a 9-man standing committeewith three members each from Armed Services, Appropriations and ForeignRelations Committees. On 5-16-66, Assistant Director Sullivan discussed

Senator McCarthystated he would be glad to consider the elimination of all names of agencies as aKcompromise althoughhe feltif hedid therewould beconfusion to whaglwould be covered in the resolution. give furtherthought toMr. Sullivan'ssuggestion thatthe FBIbe excludeI-Iquite friendly and asked to be remembered to the Director. On May 17, 1966," {SenatorMcCarthy offeredan amendmentto eliminatereference to the FBI.
ll , , in a conversation between an NBC news repre-sentative and the Press and Cultural Counselor at the Yugoslav Embassy, welearne.d the opinion was expressed that analliance would be formed betweenKennedy and Senator McCarthy, even though McCarthy does not personally likeKennedy. It was further stated that Mrs. McCarthy "hates Kennedy" and wantsnothing to do with him although no one seems to know her reasons.
On 4-3-68, a member of the McCarthy for President Committeeturned over to the Bureau a letter threatening the life of Senator McCarthy andhiswife which included a . 22 caliber bullet and a picture of a rifle silencer. This isunder investigation. We have received information regarding several other threatsto Senator McCarthy presumably as a result of his campaign statements.
