Volume 1, Issue 2
Sioux Falls School District 10.07.2016
Dear A+ Families,
This year, the staff and students of Eugene Field A+ have made a commit-ment to respect. Respect is defined as a feeling of admiring someone or some-thing that is good, valuable, and/or important. Respect can also be seen as a way of treating someone or something in an appropriate way.
Each day, the staff of Eugene Field A+ dedicate themselves to providing our students with the highest quality educational opportunities in addition to meeting their social and emotional needs. Therefore, we have committed to teaching social skills, such as respect, which enhances the learning experiences of our students; preparing them to succeed in an ever changing world. This theme of respect is highly visible in our building. We have posters displayed in classrooms, hallways, and all common areas. We will continue to teach explicit lessons and have conversations in regards to respect as it relates to our actions and behaviors in our classrooms, lunchroom, playground, and hallways. We recognize the collective efforts it takes from all members of our learning community to assist our students in becoming successful individuals who are respectful of themselves, others, and the place in which they reside. Therefore, we would certainly encourage you to extend this theme into your home. Thank you for all you do to assist our students in being the best they can be!
Respectfully, Mrs. McDaniel

Attendance Matters—Every Student. Every Day.
By Dr. Brian Maher, Superintendent
The alarm clock rings. It’s another Monday and your body doesn’t want to move. You don’t want to go to work or school. We’ve all been there – debating the risk and reward of boldly facing a new day. While pulling the covers back over our head would be easy, nothing worth working for is ever easy.
The Sioux Falls School District hopes a new attendance campaign will be the little voice in the heads of parents and students that says, “Go to school. If you’re not there, you will be missed!” In an effort to improve student achievement and increase graduation rates, the District is launching the “Attendance Matters” campaign to raise awareness about the importance of every student being in school every day.
The District considers ten or more absences in a school year to be excessive. Yet, it’s not uncommon for a long list of students to accumulate ten or more absences in the first semester. National statistics are even more startling. According to the U.S. Department of Education, an estimated 5 to 7.5 million US students miss nearly a month of school each year. That’s 30 days.
Missed school days mean missed opportunities for students to stay on track with academic and social expectations. Starting in elementary school, students fall behind and the domino effect that can lead to becoming a high school dropout begins. This is information that should really matter to all of us because one day, soon these students will be the adult employees in our workforce. Students who don’t show up to school grow into adults who don’t show up to work.
School attendance is critically important to student success. As parents, students and community leaders, the “Attendance Matters” campaign reminds of us of the responsibilities we all share if we wish to ensure student success. I hope parents will join me in encouraging students to be in school, on time, every day. Their classmates, friends, and their teachers truly will miss them if they’re not pre-sent.
Remember – nothing worth working for is ever easy. Attendance really does matter!
Head Lice
Although an annoying problem, head lice infestation should not trigger undue alarm - just action. Each year we have concern and an occasional problem with head lice. If your child is identified as having head lice, you will receive call or note from the school nurse.
Although screening may be done, we encourage parents to observe their children for indication of infestation on a regular basis. Screening may not identify beginning cases of head lice. Head scratching and intense itching of the scalp are the main indications of head lice. If you do find
head lice on your child, please treat, and inform the school nurse to ensure that proper treatment is completed.
Please talk with your child about preventing lice. Encourage them NOT to share when it comes to hats, coats, hair accessories, etc. Encourage them not to wear another student’s hat or let
another student wear their hat.

Greetings from PTA!
I hope those who attended the PTA Fall Festival
and Family SmART Run at Cherry Rock Park had a
great time. Inflatables, face painting, BINGO, pizza
and s’mores made for a fun event. Not to mention the
opportunity to sit down and visit with other families
while the kids ran off some of that inexhaustible energy.
This event couldn’t happen without all the parent and
teacher volunteers, over 75 people volunteered in some
manner. Your hard work and generosity made the PTA
Fall Festival a success, thank you. A special thank you to
Cliff Avenue Green House and Landscape Gardens for
donating fall mum decorations. Also, Paul Johnson and
Boy Scouts Pack 208 parents for providing and
staffing the fire pit for our yummy s’mores,
it was much appreciated.

This program is a volunteer opportunity for
men in students’ lives to partake in assigned
tasks during the school day for a period of 1 -2
hours per school year. If interested in
committing more time, this will be offered as
well. The TOP DOG team represents a
presence of education importance and
positive role modeling , and provides an extra

upon by PTA members and school staff, a
launch date event would be set where male
figures would attend, have a snack, complete
mandatory viewing of video, and sign up date/time to volunteer.
A SFSD volunteer application, linked here, would need to be completed prior to volun-
teering. TOP DOG team members would be required to purchase a shirt that signifies they
are part of the team. Please take the time to check out the website: www.fathers.com and
click on the Watch DOGS section for further details.
