Serving God’s Family Together.
Palm Sunday: Our Friends, the Souls in Purgatory
In late November of 2019 while visiting with a widow who had recently lost her second husband, I was asked: “Father I want to pray for my deceased husband by having Masses offered for his eternal rest. A friend told me that we do not need to pray for the deceased because we do not believe in purgatory. Father do we still believe in purgatory?” “Yes,” I said, “we believe in purgatory, and the Souls in Purgatory are greatly helped by our prayers for them. It is good to offer Masses for your deceased husband. Not only is it very good to pray for him and all the Souls in Purgatory, be sure to ask them to pray for you. For their prayers of intercession are most powerful and effective.” Since that encounter with this woman, I have been praying daily with greater devotion for the Souls in Purgatory and asking them to please intercede for me and my intentions. I have been finding great joy in this communion with our brothers and sisters of the Church Suffering. My own mother had a great devotion toward the Souls in Purgatory. She prayed daily for their welfare and sought their intercession constantly. My mother had the practice of having at least one Mass offered for every parishioner who died from her parish. She offered countless Mass for relatives and friends. She encouraged many others in her parish and family to remember to pray for the Souls in Purgatory by offering Masses for their eternal rest. I am so very grateful to my mother and her example of love for the Souls in Purgatory. Upon my mother’s death I received several books that she treasured in the later years of her life. Thirty-Day Devotions for the Holy Souls, and Prayers, Promises, and Devotions for the Holy Souls in Purgatory by Susan Tassone, published by Our Sunday Visitor, were the two gifts I sought out as aids to my daily prayer for the Souls in Purgatory. I have been blessed by the riches they offer. I want to publicly thank Susan Tassone for her service to our Catholic Church in helping renew our pastoral care for the Souls in Purgatory. I truly believe that the Souls in Purgatory guided the question asked by that elderly widow in November of 2019. I also believe that my mother is helping me to pray with even greater devotion for the Souls in Purgatory. Souls that she so loved and is now encouraging me to also interceded for them, and to ask them for their intercession. I in turn want to encourage you my brothers and sisters to intercede for the Souls in Purgatory, offer prayers for their eternal rest, especially at this time when many are dying from the COVID-19 Virus; ask them to intercede for your own personal intentions, as well as the needs and concerns for our parish and the world. Saint Thomas Aquinas said: “Of all prayers, the most meritorious, the most acceptable to God, are prayers for the dead, because they imply all the works of charity, both corporal and spiritual.” (Thirty-Day Devotions for the Holy Souls, by Susan Tassone, page 145, published by Our Sunday Visitor).
When I pray for the Souls in Purgatory, I am filled with joy and gratitude. I want you to experience this joy also. The Souls in Purgatory are our friends. For truly the words of Saint Paul to the Philippians comes alive in a new way when we intercede for the Souls in Purgatory. “I give thanks to my God at every remembrance of you, praying always with joy in every prayer for all of you,” (Philippians 1:3-4) This joy comes from the communion that we share with the Souls in Purgatory in Christ our Lord.
In this moment of anxiety with the pandemic of the COVID-19 Virus afflicting every country, we are witnessing an increase of deaths throughout the world. We are praying for protection for ourselves and others, we are remembering to pray for the sick, let us also remember to pray for those who have died. We are reminded more emphatically of the shortness of life, and of the day of our own death, and the judgment

we must all receive before the Lord. On that day may the words from Jeremiah bring us consolation: “I have loved you with an everlasting love. ”(Jeremiah 31:3) Words that the Souls in Purgatory know well and want us to trust in whole heartily. I have included as a bulletin insert this week a Litany Memorial Prayer for the Suffering Souls in Purgatory.
