India’s Versova Beachin Mumbai, once aknee-deep dump yardfor plastics & rubbish, has been transformedinto a pristine piece ofcoastline after a massive volunteerclean-up operation. Atleast 80 Olive Ridleyturtle hatchlingsreturned to the sea forthe first time in 20years & Versova Beachis now considered asanctuary, protected

from wild dogs and birds of prey. It is overseen & protected by volunteers whoslept overnight in the sand to watch over the turtles. In the past, Olive Ridleyturtles would lay eggs in the area, but the hatchlings had been unable toclimb through the trash. You can check out the transformation in this shortvideo - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5X5SFPUIFNQ

A recent expedition to the Fernandina Island in the Galapagos discovered a tortoise species thought to have gone extinct more than100 years ago. Galapagos Parks Authority took the tortoise by boat tothe Giant Turtle Breeding Center on the Isle of Santa Cruz. Due to tracesin other areas of the island, there may be more alive. The species wasthought to have died out due to frequent volcanic eruptions. It is possible that representatives may return & look for others so they canstart a breeding program. The last time Chelonoidis phantasticus wasseen alive was 1906.

GOOD NEWS!FOR ANIMALS

Olive Ridley turtle hatchlings make their very first journey to the sea.

Alligators and crocodiles are either isolated in small, barrenconcrete enclosures or are jammed together with hundreds ofothers, awaiting a brutal death. All this for a “luxury” fashion

accessory. Above is our Croc, a caiman (member of the croco-dile family) and a lucky resident at Popcorn Park.

The Australian Senate passed a bill which effectively outlaws thetesting of cosmetics on animals in the country. Industrial Chemical

Charges Bill 2017 was first introduced in June 2017 & agreed on inOctober. The law dictates that Australia will no longer consider the

results of animal testing acceptable proof of a product’s safety, making animal testing on cosmetic products a pointless waste ofmoney. While not banning the practice outright, it means beauty

brands must find alternative ways of testing their products. The billalso provides support for non-animal methods of testing, to ensure

cruelty-free beauty products have a future in Australia.

Hello Bello is a new baby productline from actor, husband/wife

Kellogg’s Company has agreed to end all unnecessary animal testing withinits corporation. PETA estimates that Kellogg’s has been conducting studies onanimals for at least 65 years. PETA has petitioned Kellogg’s to ban animaltesting since 2007. Studies show that animals were force-fed, mutilated, &dissected in an effort to establish health-related claims, resulting in the deathof 1,213 rats, 60 hamsters from 1995 to 2016. Kellogg’s denies the claims.

There will be no justice as long as man will stand with a knifeor with a gun and destroy those who are weaker than he is.

The Hershey Company has adopted a NEWpolicy banning cruel & fatal laboratory

experiments on animals in order to estab-lish health claims for marketing its products& ingredients. In a meeting with PETA, sci-

animal testing. PETA is now in talks withthe maker of Pocky sticks, Japanese choco-late giant Meiji Holdings, & Morinage &Co., maker of HI-CHEW candies. Thesecompanies have funded or conducted lethal tests on thousands of

ILLEGAL WHALE PRISON FOUND IN RUSSIAWITH OVER 100 CAPTIVE MARINE ANIMALS

WHAT LESSONS ARE OUR CHILDREN BEING TAUGHT?

Animal activists in Russia are working to free 100 marine animals heldunder horrendous conditions, calling it a “whale prison”. In Russia, it isillegal to capture whales unless it is for scientific or cultural purposes.Animal activists exposed the facility for capturing 90 belugas & 12 orcas. The animals are kept in small, crowded pools – 12-15 baby whales arecrammed on top of each other in small chain-link pens. Russian presidentVladimir Putin has brought criminal charges against four related compa-nies for allegedly capturing & holding the more than 90 beluga whales& as many as 13 orcas in sea pens. The companies involved have beenfined for previous illegal capture of whales & have a history of sellinganimals to amusement parks. The future for the animals presently kept inpens has not been decided. Reports indicate that the Russian governmentwould soon prohibit marine mammal captures. The animals are sufferingtremendously with frostbite, fungi & bacterial infection, & according toreports, are being hit in the head with shovels. Found huddled in a backyard, the AHS rescued the little dogonly days away from death.

With special care in our Medical Dept., Minnie had a bigfuture ahead ….

Minnie spent time in the Tinton FallsMedical Dept. until she was adopted. Minnie has graduated to be a service dog!

NEAR-DEATH PUP NOW TRAINING TO BE A SERVICE DOG!

5 POUND TERRIER TIED TO FENCE & ABANDONED IN COLD, POURING RAIN

Minnie was scarcely alive when she was rescued by the AHS Newark facility, found huddledand cold with no shelter in a resident’s backyard. Every bone protruded from her tiny body. She was brought to our AHS Newark Medical Dept. for immediate care, where she quicklybecame a very popular patient. Once she was stable enough to travel, she was brought toour Tinton Falls facility where she was further tended to in their Medical Dept. and givenlots of loving care by staff.Peter & Margie Minichin of Pine Beach saw the pathetic, skeletal animal that was rallying toive and put in an application for her. We have since heard from Peter:“Minnie is doing great! Her training is going well. (They are using TADSAW (Train A Dog -Save A Warrior), a non-profit organization who trains service dogs, medical alert service dogs& much more!) Minnie loves to play and enjoys people and little kids. I had her at theOcean County library for a children’s reading time & she was a big hit! She loves the atten-tion. I do have one slight issue. Which one of you said she shouldn’t get much bigger. She’s at 37 lbs. and the vet said she’s still growing and will fill out more and she might hit50 lbs! I want to thank you again for giving me my Battle Buddy and best friend”.

Happy Endings

During the torrential downpours of a coldand dreary January day, we can't imaginewhat was going through this little one'smind. He had a family once; he had a home;he even had someone who once loved himenough to have painted his little toe nails. But when those people vacated their home, not only did they not take him with them, they chained up the five pound dog to afence and left him outside to freeze or starve to death. It's safe to say that Charlie, as we came to callhim, did absolutely nothing to deserve beingleft outside like a piece of old furniture. When the officer from our AHS- Newark facility went to the residence in Irvington torescue the poor dog, he found him soaked tothe skin and matted beyond belief. Charliewas quickly freed from his chain, wrappedup, and taken into the warm van that trans-ported him to AHS-Newark's medical depart-ment. Charlie was given a thorough exam,

inoculations, and then the medical staff got to work freeing the 2-year-old pup of thedreadful mats that were twisting and tugging at his small body.Charlie’s sad experience was featured on our website (ahscares.org) and as a result, hewas promptly adopted by Linda and Michael Paserchia of Clark where he will finallybe treasured.

The badly matted 5 pound dog waschained to a fence in the cold rain ashis owners moved away.

In July 2017 these two gorgeous siblings came through our doors, dirty and indespair. They were picked up as strays and wouldn't leave each other's side. Wecleaned them up and warmed them up and eventually, an owner came forward. After debating for a while over whether they wanted their, "annoying" dogs back, they decided against it, and signed them over. Astro and Nova became big hits withall of us immediately and you couldn't help but love these two goofballs! Since wewould not separate them, we knew it would take a little longer to get them adopted, but finally in July, 2018, the perfect family came along – Diane & Craig Bishop ofLakewood. We just received this update and beautiful pictures of our old pals, Astroand Nova ....."We adopted them both July 21, 2018 and both Astro and Nova are doing very welland have adjusted completely and are happy in our home. We kept their names, they didn’t need to be more confused with all the new things they were discoveringhere. They go on their daily walks everyday, about 2-½ miles and they love theirtoys and marrow bones. They are wonderful with my grandchildren. Both of themlove to cuddle with us and Nova enjoys having her coat brushed. Both are extremelyhappy and healthy and we love them very much."

This silly, sweet, cow-colored girlcame to us way back in April, 2018,

from our Newark facility after shewas found in such a sad state and

appeared in the June 2018 issue ofthe HUMANE NEWS. Harper was

found in a Newark backyard with aworn muzzle wrapped tightly

around her mouth & it appearedfrom her skin condition, it had been on for awhile. The

poor girl couldn't eat, drink, or even bark for help. Whenthe Animal Control Officer found her amid the filth &garbage, he immediately took off the muzzle … & she

sat calmly in the front seat of the ambulance. Her sweet, calm temperament defied any reason why a muzzle

would have been used. She spent several weeks in ourAHS Newark medical department where she put on

weight and the cuts on her face all healed up, then shecame to AHS/Popcorn Park to find herself a home. It tookher a while to get discovered, but we kind of think she'sfeeling like it was worth the wait! She got a great home

with the Toth family of Beachwood to love her, and we'reso happy for her. Congratulations Harper and family, and

best wishes for a long and happy life together!

BONDED SIBLINGS STAY TOGETHER IN LOVING HOME FELINE FAMILY ABANDONED ATCLOSED RV PARK STAY TOGETHER

WITH CARING CAT PERSON

The Toth Family of Beachwood opened theirhearts & home to Harper, who had been found

with a muzzle wrapped around her snout.

This feline family was dumped at an RV park that was closed. RitaOakes took the entire family into her heart & home!

The worn muzzle had been tightly placedover the snout which had been on for a whilecausing a raw skin condition.

Happy Endings

It was a cold, rainy night in November when we were alerted toa feline family dumped at an RV park that was closed for theseason. They were left in the wooded area with a small cro-cheted blanket, & watched as their owner drove away. They

weren’t strays or ferals … they had been indoor cats, used tothe safety & comfort of a warm home. The caretaker of the parknoticed the abandonment as the owner drove away & called forhelp immediately. The frightened cats scattered & hid, makingit difficult to gather them up. With the help of the year-round

resident at the park, our ACO Maria, & a local rescue group, thearea was staked out for several days. Finally, all members of thecat family were retrieved, then reunited when brought back to

the shelter. Harmony, Joey, and their baby Bruce Lee spent timeat the shelter getting healthy & strong. We are THRILLED that

the feline family is staying together. Congratulations to them alland thanks to Rita Oakes of Toms River for taking them into

her heart and home.It took just a moment to read about this happy event ….

but it took several weeks and much effort by so many people to obtain a happy ending.

After being at AHS for a year, Astro & Novawere given a wonderful home by Diane &

Meet Kit the silver fox. You may have heard theterm `silver fox’ in the context of a fur coat, andthis is indeed the type fox that is bred for thefur trade. Kit is a color variant and every bit ashandsome. Kit began his life in Kentucky wherehe was purchased at a flea market, his familythinking it would be neat to have a fox for a pet. They took him everywhere to show him off, andposted his photos widely on social media. It wasthere he was spotted by Fish & Wildlife, and sub-sequently confiscated as permits are required tokeep foxes. Kit was brought to a veterinarianwho was also a wildlife rehabilitator who caredfor him and restored his health. As Kit was fartoo domesticated to survivie in his natural habi-tat, he needed a permanent home, and happily, found Popcorn Park. This 2-year-old adorable boy is Turtle (also affectionately known as Wobbles). Turtle cameto us in rough shape, with an unexplained cut across his neck and a noticeable lack ofbalance/coordination. It was March 2018 when the NewarkPolice Dept. alerted AHS Newark totwo dogs languishing by a junked carin the raw, cold weather on a heavilytraveled street. One dog (Sunny) waskept in the junked car while the otherdog (Freedom) was tied to the rearbumper with no shelter or sustenance. After many months, Sunny was rescuedby True Friends in Pennsylvania andhas a great home. Thankfully, theirhorrible existence never let it ruin theirnice dispositions. Unfortunately Freedom's ownerthought this was suitable living condi-tions and took us to court to try to gethim back. Freedom spent the next 10months on a court hold, which meanthe couldn't go out with volunteers andhe couldn't be adopted. Fortunately

for Freedom, his owner was not able to reclaim him and he is now officially ready forthe forever home he truly deserves. Freedom is about 7 years young, sweet, affection-ate and people focused. He is also very food motivated; as you can see he has put on afew pounds and looks quite different from the starving dog that arrived last March.Freedom sat on command and accepted treats gently from our fingers. He had noissues being handled as he ate from his food bowl, plus Freedom was relaxed and com-fortable with the male and female dogs he met outside. Over the past 11 months,Freedom has made some great friends here at the shelter, including our ACO, Tom, whorescued him from that junkyard last year. Although we are definitely going to miss thisboy, nothing would make us happier than seeing him in a warm, loving, forever home… something he hasn’t had. Stop by to meet our amazing boy Freedom. We were contacted inmid-January by a res-cue group in NorthCarolina, asking forhelp for a very needydog. Eunice, a 6-year-old Foxhound, was brought to a vet-

erinarian by her owner, who asked that she be euthanized because she wouldno longer hunt. Thankfully, the vet chose not to euthanize Eunice, and insteadtook her in and began searching for somewhere safe to send this sweet dog. When Eunice arrived, she was not only skin and bones, but she was absolute-ly, positively petrified. She cringed at the thought of someone reaching forher, and she crouched and trembled as she stood there, awaiting her fate. Weset her up in an office, as putting her in a kennel was not an option for a dogwith this level of fear, and her healing began. Eunice had trouble eating in thefirst few days and definitely did not want to eat in front of anyone. With kind-ness and compassion, she was soon relaxing, wagging her tail a little, eatingvery well, and even tossing around a ball from time to time. She made suchprogress, but faced another obstacle. When Eunice was spayed, her work-up revealed that she is in renal failure. Weimmediately changed Eunice to a prescription kidney diet which she is gob-bling up as fast as we can fill the bowl! The good news is, dogs can live withrenal failure for quite a while if managed properly with the prescription diet.Eunice will need to stay on this diet indefinitely. Our hope is that some loving, compassionate family will fall in love and giveEunice a wonderful home for the rest of her life, however short or long that

The AHS was called late at night when the Irvington PoliceDept. found an emaciated stray, left to suffer with injuries, &in need of assistance. It is heartwrenching to see these strays

in the most pitiful condition. Aurora was in rough shape; skinny, dirty, and with an open wound on her leg.

When our animal control officer picked her up during theovernight shift, she knew Aurora needed immediate medicalattention and rushed her to the 24-hour veterinary hospital.

There, Aurora was cleaned up and given the medical care sheneeded. She was soon transferred back to the AHS Newark

Medical Department where she was able to recover from herinjury. Now this beautiful girl is all healed up and ready for

her forever home. Aurora is about a year old. She is an incredibly affectionate, friendly, and people-focused girl. She accepted treats softly

from our fingers and was comfortable with all handling as sheate from her food bowl. She loved playing fetch with her toysand brought the ball right back for us to throw again. Aurora

was also relaxed and friendly with the female dogs she met outside.

We can't change what she went through in her past, but sheis safe now and the future is bright for this amazing girl.

Aurora is accepting applications during our regular adoptionhours and we know there is a wonderful home out there just

waiting for her. Stop by to meet Aurora; we guarantee she willsteal your heart, just like she has stolen ours.

FEDERAL LEGISLATION

PHOTO COURTESY OF: RANDALL R. SAXTON / WIKIPEDIA COMMONS

A bipartisan bill has been reintroduced to end the cruel practice of “soring” Tennessee walking horses & related breeds. Soring is the practiceof intentionally inflicting pain on the hooves & legs of performance walking horses – using caustic chemicals, chains, weighted shoes, cutting,& other gruesome techniques in order for them to perform a pain-based,artificially high-stepping gait. Congress tried to end this practice over 50years ago. H.R. 693 will eliminate the failed walking horse industry ofself-policing & put the U. S. Dept. of Agriculture In charge of licensing, training, & oversight of all inspectors.

The Wildlife Conservation & Anti-Trafficking Act of 2019 would strength-en the enforcement powers of federal agencies who are tasked with fight-ing poaching & wildlife trafficking. The bill was introduced byCongressman John Garamendi (D-CA) and Congressman Don Young (R-AK). The slaughter of elephants, rhinos, tigers & other species hasbecome a devastating crisis & demands strongest enforcement efforts &penalties. Please contact your U. S. Representatives to support this bill.

Down at the other end of the state, radio personalities were announcingthe first annual Squirrel Classic in Winslow billed as a family event wherepeople would bring their children to shoot squirrels. Families would compete for the biggest squirrel. People showed up …. however, squir-rels did not. And for the entire day, only three squirrels were taken. Theevent was held at the Inskip Antlers Hunting Club where they still held theirskinning demonstrations. We wonder if there will be a second annual….

And on February 23rd, at the Ocean City Sportsman’s Club in NewGretna, there was yet another squirrel “Tournament.” One of the featureditems claimed “squirrels may be harvested by any means legal in the stateeof New Jersey” , and invited one or two person teams with cash prizesfor first place and lunker, (dictionary defines as an exceptionally largespecimen of something, usuaally a fish.)

The AHS Tinton Falls shelter was contacted by a Howell Township homeowner who was attempting to remedy a rodent problem. Twoyoung flying squirrels had gotten stuck & had become panicked in theirefforts to escape. One had even attempted to chew off his leg to free himself. It is a horrible way to dispose of a living creature. Animal ControlOfficer Luis Mercado picked up the squirrels & brought them to a wildliferehabilitator where the squirrels were removed from the death traps. Theyrested for several days & were then released back to the wild.Homeowners who have a wildlife problem have other alternatives. Senate Bill 3046 (Kean, Jr., Bucco)would establish an animal crueltyoffense of engaging in, facilitating orproviding the means to engage intrunk fighting as a crime of the thirddegree. It defines trunk fighting as the practice of enclosingtwo or more animals in the trunk of a motor vehicle for thepurpose of the animals attacking each other & possibly fight-ing until one or more of the animals is dead. Violations wouldbe not less than $500 or more than $1,000. If the violationoccurs near a highway, there is a mandatory sum of $1,000.

A4552/4385 (Armato, Mukherji, Mazzeo, Rooney, Murphy,Benson, Jones, Downey, Houghtaling, Mejia) would prohibitleasing dogs and cats. This deceptive practice is a concernnationwide. The concern is the typical pet leasing situation inwhich pet store personnel encourage customers who want tobuy a puppy but cannot afford the high sticker price. They willuse “financing” (unbeknownst to many customers) to take theanimal home. Consumers are not aware that the papersthey’ve signed are “pet leases” that empower a third party toseize their dog if they fail to make make monthly payments &make the lender the dog’s legal owner. Under these “leases”,the total amount of money the customer pays is often signifi-cantly higher. California, Nevada, & New York lawmakershave determined pet leasing so detrimental that they bannedthe practice outright according to the Animal Legal DefenseFund.

Cinnamon is asuper sweetolder girl thatreally had arough life. Shedeserved somuch betterthan being neglected andhaving litters of
