EUROCAEDLSactivities
WG 92 (VDL mode 2) workingframework
• All the activities of revision of the current ED-92B are conducted by WG 92 jointly with RTCA SC 214
• All discussions regarding potential changes to ED-92B are also coordinated with AEEC
• Changes to ED-92 & DO-281 (airborne MOPS) should also lead to changes to DO-224 (MASPS system document ) for consistency and traceability objectives
• These changes could also generate ICAO documentation update proposals

ELSA issues addressed
• From ELSA study 26 issues were identified• 3 issues are generating changes to ED 92. 2 other issues could
also lead to changes (not yet confirmed).• 5 issues are generating changes to A 631.• 6 issues are dealing with the ground segment. They will be
addressed in the preparation of the companion document. Activity is just starting on this point (to be noted that this part will not be addressed jointly with RTCA but will require coordination with ETSI )
• 10 issues have been considered as not relevant for the equipment standards.
EDs publication objectives
• ED-92C / DO-281C• Completed: mid 2018 • Official publication: end 2018
• New ED companion document (providing assumptionson ground network behavior)• Completed: end 2018 • Official publication: mid 2019
• RTCA MASPS DO-224C • Completed : mid 2018
• AEEC A631C • Same timescale
Nature of the changes includedin ED 92C
• All changes foreseen are not fundamental ones:• Mainly clarification and explanation• Should not lead to new approval process for already certified
avionics• Traceability and consistency between MASPS and MOPS is
another objective for changes• New tests introduced in the MOPS to map to MASPS requirements
• Finally full traceability between ICAO material and MASPS should be also addressed
Complementary activities
• EUROCAE WG 82 activities:• Airport data-link (i.e. AeroMacs) standards
• ED-223 MOPS completed and published• ED-227 MASPS completed and published
• Satellite performance standards supporting RCP 130 & RSP 160 (including Iris Precursor annex)• ED-242 MASPS completed and published• ED-243 MOPS completed and published• ED-242a & ED-243a to include VPN function, security features
and new services (i.e. VoIP ) on-going activities – target date early 2018
Other considerations 1/2
• ED-92 is a MOPS document with a clear objective:• AMC for the certification of the VDL Mode 2 avionic boxes (radio
and ATSU/CMU)• Conformity demonstration to the basic requirements in a laboratory
environment• MOPS test are not addressing the actual operational context of VDL mode 2
exchanges• New tests introduced in the MOPS to map to MASPS
requirements (implicit become explicit)• End to end tests are considered as outside the perimeter
of a MOPS• It is one of the topic to be addressed within EASA DLS Rule
making activities
Other considerations 2/2
• VDL mode 2 technology does not allow prioritization of exchanges sharing the same resource• Mixing AOC and ATS traffic on such low performance data-link
system cannot ensure the stability of the quality of service when the traffic is growing (especially if the growth of AOC is quicker than the ATS one)
• Alternative technologies (e.g. Iris Precursor already standardized) using resource and priority management mechanisms are more appropriate for handling both traffic flows (ATS and AOC)• Introduction of such technologies should be accelerated and
incentivised
Thankyou!Anyquestions?
