Research work and principal scientific achievements

Dr George Zodiatis is the Vice Director of the Oceanography Center University of Cyprus, with manyyears research work experience also in other European marine research centers, as for example atthe Institute of Oceanography of the National Center for Marine Research (today known as HCMR) inAthens. He has a 27 years of research experience in oceanography and marine sciences in theMediterranean and in the Black Sea. The last 14 years he is deep involved in the development of theoperational oceanography in Europe, particularly within the framework of the Copernicus marinecomponent (former known as Global Monitoring for Environment and Security-GMES) projects, relatedto operational ocean forecasting and observing systems.

He led the development of the Cyprus Coastal Ocean Forecasting and Observing System-CYCOFOS,www.oceanography.ucy.ac.cy/cycofos known to be the first operational coastal/shelf forecastingsystem in the Mediterranean, providing daily sea forecasts since early 2002.Moreover, he is a co-developer of an advance oil spill and trajectory predictions system, well know asMEDSLIK, a prediction system that has been used by European and International key agencies, suchEMSA and REMPEC and many national agencies throughout the Mediterranean to support theresponse agencies in cases of major oil spill incidents and to assist them to implement the relevantEU Directives and regional and national contingency plans regarding the maritime safety. He has been participated as a leader and as a partner in more than 25 marine research projects in theEuropean seas, most of them funded by the European Commission-EC and the Cyprus ResearchPromotion Foundation-RPF.He is the chairperson of the Data Exchange Agreement-DEA of the Mediterranean OceanographyNetwork for Global Ocean Observing Systems-MONGOOS (former known as MOON), since 2008.Moreover, he is a member of several International and European organizations related tooceanography and marine research in Europe, such as CIESM, IODE/IOC, EuroGOOS, GOOS,IOC/NEAMTWS.He has more than a 120 publications in European and United States scientific journals andproceedings of conferences, monographs too, as well participated in more than a 100 conferencesand dedicated workshops as invited and regular oral lecturer on topics related to ocean observationand numerical modelling, marine data management, marine environment, wave energy and marinedownstream applications.
