• Fief- plot of land given by the king to nobles that pledged their loyalty.
• Manors- farming communities that developed within a fief that could produce everything the people needed
• Vassals- Nobles that accepted land in return for their loyalty to the king or queen

Feudal Society During the Middle ages
• With the collapse of the Roman empire people were left without protection from invasion- a new form a government emerged called Feudalism
• Feudalism was a system of rule in which local rulers swore allegiance to monarchs.
• Monarchs granted small plots of land called fiefs to nobles to gain their loyalty and service.

Feudal Society During the middle ages
• These nobles or lords would divide their land into smaller fiefs and appointed knights who were responsible for duties such as enforcing laws and collecting taxes within their small fief.
• At the bottom of feudal society were “serfs” or peasants who made up the majority of the population and farmed the lord’s estate or manor for protection and a place to live.

Manorial System in the middle ages
• Fiefs contained one or several manors.
• Manors were self- sufficient farming communities- meaning that they could produce everything the people needed including food clothing and lumber for building houses.
• Manors had a rigid social structure- For example serfs remained serfs and even their children were born serfs.
