I t gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Riviera’s European Marine Engineering Conference, Awards and Exhibition.

The new title better reflects the range of topics covered across our two-day programme. The switch this year to Amsterdam has been made in order to make our conference all the more accessible to the mainland European shipowning communities, while retaining our loyal attendees.

Neither change denotes a deviation from our customary focus on delivering a programme that addresses and provides answers to prevailing marine engineering issues and concerns.

Nor does the new name and location change reflect a move away from our custom of evolving the format and introducing new elements.

This year we have integrated the findings of our Marine Propulsion Industry Survey, sponsored by ExxonMobil, into the agenda to offer context to the various panel sessions and to ensure that the voices and views of our readers are heard at the event by suppliers, regulators, owners and other leading opinion formers.

Another innovation is the speaker survival guide. Here, each speaker will conclude their presentation with a summary of the points delegates need to take away and apply to survive and even thrive in the year ahead.

Perhaps the idea that we are marrying the best

of our heritage with new thinking is most fully reflected in the Doug Woodyard Memorial Debate.

This will see two opposing teams – as well as delegates – debate whether the conference believes it does not pay to install green technologies. One team will argue for the motion and the other against. The winning team will be decided by audience vote. The intention is that the debate reflects the journalism of former editor of Marine Propulsion, the late Doug Woodyard. Doug was recognised and respected throughout the industry for his authoritative journalism and forthright style.

Our awards have also progressed since our 2015 event. The role of the judges has been bolstered and a new weighting system attached to their votes and that of our readership online. And reflecting our investment in the industry more widely this year sees a new category: the Graduate Research Award.

Of course this year’s event could not have been organised without the generous support of our sponsors, our exhibitors or the wholehearted backing of our official supporting organisations.

And it could not have taken place without you. We thank you most sincerely for coming in such numbers, and from all over the world. Together we can look forward to an enjoyable, insightful and productive two days.

Join the celebrations! All delegates are invited to join in the celebrations for the Annual Marine Propulsion Conference, Awards and Exhibition 2016 at the Gala Dinner that will immediately follow the Drinks Reception at the end of day one.

PLEASE CONFIRM AT THE CONFERENCE REGISTRATION DESK WHETHER YOU INTEND TO JOIN US FOR THIS MEMORABLE EVENING

The Marine Propulsion & Auxiliary Machinery Awards are the industry’s most coveted and credible. There were nearly 50 entries in total, across eight of the categories, which were whittled down by a combined Riviera/industry panel to three per category. These shortlists were put online and the winners were determined by combining the judges’ and the online voters’ preferences. Presentations to the winners will be made during this evening’s gala dinner.

A new category has been added this year: a Graduate Research Award. Its entries were reviewed by John Carlton, professor of marine engineering at the School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, City University London, together with the staff of Marine Propulsion & Auxiliary Machinery.

The lifetime achievement award was determined by Riviera’s editorial team alone.
