About GEIR
GEIR (Groupement Européen de l‘Industrie de la Regeneration)
GEIR is the European Regeneration Industry Association defending the interests
of the re-refining industry in front of EU policy-makers and stakeholders.
Objectives
• To promote used oil collection and recycling
• To support the development of used oil recycling in Europe
• To support the priority of used oil re-refining over incineration
GEIR represents 80-85 per cent of the industry active in 9 EU Member States:
Germany, Italy, Spain, Denmark, the Netherlands, Poland, Greece, Finland and UK
GEIR maintains permanent contacts with the European Institutions as well as with all
stakeholders that are showing interest in the very actual and crucial issue of used oil.

How to further enhance recycling in Europe?
1. Used oil regeneration good example of resource efficient, cradle to cradle approach to waste management:
• Environment benefits: energy savings; CO2 emissions savings; managing health risks
• Economic benefits: lubricant market remains in balance; security of base oil supply
• Social benefits: secures jobs; potential for new jobs creation
2. EU collection and recycling targets for used oils good way forward:
• EU-wide target of 95 - 100 per cent collection of used oils of the collectable waste oil in
each Member State.
• EU-wide target of reaching at least 60 per cent of regenerated used oils of collectable
used oil for all Member States by 2020.
• EU-wide ultimate target of 85 per cent regenerated used oils of collectable used oil in all
Member States by 2025.
• Member States which do not have facilities to regenerate used oil must export to other EU
Member States in order to meet their targets.
