If you have a late crossing booked you may have time for a slight detour to one of our local supermarkets in order to stock up before you embark on your European adventure. Once you have arrived in Calais, we have selected 3 local campsites that are located close to the Calais port, drive time no more than 35 mins, 22 miles. Staying on one of these for your first night gives you chance to recharge your batteries and get your bearings.

Once you have recharged your batteries and are ready to embark on your European Adventure it is time to move on to your next campsite in Guignicourt near Reims, France

Laon is often overlooked as a destination by visitors but this town is worth stopping to take a look and explore, full of art, history and culture. It has one of the oldest cathedrals in France dating back to the 12th century. The town centre has a new mini tram system recently installed to make visitors exploring more accessible.

Reims is the city of Coronations and Champagne. The jewel of the city, the Notre-Dame cathedral has been the place of coronation for 33 kings of France from 816 to 1825. Also not to be missed in the city is the Place Drouet-d’Erlon square with its lively cafes, shops and restaurants. Also known for its Champagne, there are tours available for you to visit the wineries and see where the champagne wines are grown and nurtured and the Champagne production method, then at the end of your tour you will have the option to sample the product.

Lyon is a city of art and culture full of museums and historic sites. As a symbol of the city’s cultural heritage the Guignol puppet has become an emblem of Lyon. There is also an excellent zoo in Lyon as well as tropical greenhouses. Lyon also has a large shopping centre on the left bank of the Rhone if a bit of retail therapy is needed. If you don’t want all the hustle and bustle of Lyon you could always visit the tranquil region of Beaujolais, with its little villages built in golden coloured stone, its fortified castles, its paths along the Saone Valley, vineyards and inns are worth a visit.

Milan is just over an hour away so you could get the local bus and get a bit of retail therapy.

Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy and a popular holiday location located in the north of Italy, halfway between Brescia and Verona and between Venice and Milan. There are many things to do in this area such as wind surfing, cycling, sailing, hiking as well as a safari park, water park, amusements park and wine tasting, activities to suit all ages. As there is so much to do around Lake Garda you may wish to stay longer.

Full of history Augsburg has lots to do and see from museums to historic architecture, art exhibits and a great zoo. Lech camping have a good bus connection into Augsburg that stops directly at the campsite.Opposite the campsite there is a food square that also offer all their dishes to take away. On the actual site there is a restaurant with a lake terrace, the site also offers a bread service and newspapers in the morning with various coffees. Lech Campsite is right on a lake that is suitable for swimming in and offers surfboards and boats. Children’s playground with fixed and flexible play equipment, table tennis and trampolines. This site has modern wc/shower blocks and also has a caravan/motorhome washing area and a chemical toilet disposable area. This campsite is surrounded by trees and a small river so you are able to combine luxury with camping. The campsite is situated 3.5 km out of Freudenstadt, the heart of the northern Black Forest and has a great grid of public footpaths and offers guided hiking, BBQ’s, fishing, swimming and lots more. The beautiful valley where the campsite is situated is called the Forbach valley. Typical traditional crafts include glass making, charcoal burning and mining.The campsite itself offers all the basic campsite facilities as well as an onsite museum, nature trails, a lake and a bbq hut. Mercedes-Benz and Porsche have headquarters and museums here. Stuttgart has lots of popular parks including Wilhelma, one of the largest zoos and botanical gardens in Europe, is just northeast of Rosenstein Castle.The bohemian Bohnenviertel quarter is filled with 14th-centuary buildings housing shops and restaurants.

The campsite includes green pitches and has lots of water sports on the river during the summer. There are also good local transport links into Bacharach, which is a beautiful town with lots of sightseeing and things to do from river cruises, wineries & vineyards, churches & cathedrals, ancient ruins and shopping. There is a bus stop just outside the campsite if you wanted to venture into Brussels or the village of Grimbergen is within walking distance. Next to the campsite are several restaurants and an open air swimming pool which is open in July/August. There is also a spa centre 1km from the campsite that caters for the whole family. The campsite reception will be happy to give you information on all that is available on and around the campsite. Camping Grimbergen have hard standing pitches for Motorhomes with electric hook up and easily accessible disposal for chemical waste. Two of the Belgium campsites are located a short distance from Brussells, the best way to see this city is the well-known hop-on hop-off bus, and will include sights such as Grand Place, a delicatedsculpted town square erected over the centuries to become the representation of Brussells history. The Hotel de Ville (Town Hall) is still in use today. Located just down from the Brussells Centrale, this historical marketplace is a must see. Just a few narrow alleyways from the Grand Place stands the Peeing Boy or Manneken Pis a famous little statue. Brussellsis also well known for its Chocolate and Beer and Grand Place is the best place to sample and buy both.

Our last campsite is in France, only 79 miles from the Belgium city of Ghent and 20 miles to the Ferry Port of Calais.

This campsite is in Gravelines, Northern France and this city is classified among the 100 most beautiful detours of France at the crossroads of Europe. It is a fortified city and a World Heritage site ideally situated 20 mins from Belgium one side and the other 20mins from Calais port. Gravelines City has many places to visit and is themed around the Sea.

The campsite has direct access to the beach and only 1km from the city, so would be a great place to spend the last few days of your European trip as there is a lot to see and do.

Camping des Dunes has a sports complex 500 meters away, an entertainment team during summer months to keep the children amused as well as an entertainment program for young and old during the months of July/August.
