POS terminals. It is immediately available in the U.S., and First Data will begin to roll it out internationally

by year end. In all

markets Clover Mini will eventually replace First Data’s FD 130 countertop device. Clover Mini accepts card payments initiated by magnetic stripes (secured by signature and PIN), EMV-compliant contact-type (PIN + signature)

chips, and EMV-compliant, NFC-based contactless card and mobile phones.

Clover Mini is the first tablet to offer fully certified on-screen PIN entry, which means

merchants don’t have to buy a peripheral device to handle

that function. The 7-inch Antimicrobial Corning

Gorilla Glass screen that displays the virtual PIN pad also captures signatures.

Clover Mini is equipped with a built-in printer, front-facing camera (to facilitate check acceptance), and barcode and QR code reader.

Merchants receive all required network and security certification including full PCI PTS 4.0, Secure Reading and Exchange of Data (SRED) module, and TransArmor

end-to-end encryption. Security and data protection includes mutually-authenticated SSL/TLS transactions.

First Data launched Clover Station (a larger, register-type tablet with cash drawer) in 2013 and Clover Mobile (a battery operated handheld device) in 2014. As is the case with those devices, Clover Mini gives merchants access to 100 software apps from the Clover App Market. These apps are created by First Data’s in-house development teams and third-party providers.

person-to-person (P2P) money transfers since 2011. In the fourth quarter of last year clearXchange added two new products — business-to-consumer (B2C) and government-to-consumer (G2C) disbursements.

Bank members of clearXchange include JPMorgan Chase, Capital One, Bank of America, U.S. Bank, and Wells Fargo — five of the six largest U.S. banks based on consumer deposits. Their customers, and those of smaller regional bank members of clearXchange, need only an email address or mobile phone number to send funds directly to a recipients checking or savings account. All interbank P2P, B2C, and G2C transactions, including those where the recipient

is not a customer of a clearXchange member bank, are settled through the automated clearing house. Intrabank transactions are settled within a member’s own internal ledger system. Recipients need to register their email or phone number only one time. Transactions are browser-based from online or mobile channels or initiated from a bank’s app.

ClearXchange members offer immediate availability of funds when money transfers and disbursements are in-house. Currently, more than 50% of clearXchange transactions are completed in real-time. New technology created by clearXchange

now enables real-time settlement for P2P, B2C, and G2C transactions when they are interbank.

ClearXchange, whose service is always white labeled by its member banks, says P2P money transfers have doubled each year since 2011. It believes there will be continued growth from that product as well as the B2C and

payments at the point of sale. Nearly 35% of POS terminals in Canada have NFC card readers including those at most big box retailers and supermarkets.

Suretap originally launched in May 2014 as a proprietary mobile wallet in select smartphones available from Rogers Communications, Canada’s largest MNO. However, NFC payments could only be made using a prepaid MasterCard card issued by Peoples Trust. Consumer could top up that account using a Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card from any bank.

Last fall Rogers established suretap as a stand-alone corporation in partnership with the country’s other top mobile network operators, Bell and Telus, as well as their mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) subsidiaries Virgin and Koodo.

Collectively the suretap MNOs and MVNOs

support more than 30 NFC-capable handsets from Samsung, HTC, LG, BlackBerry, and Sony. The suretap app will be preloaded on those devices. Consumers who want to download the suretap mobile payments app must first

buy a suretap NFC SIM card. The payment app is stored in a Secure Element on that SIM, which also facilitates the NFC capability and operates at 3G/4G and LTE speeds. Over-the-air provisioning of card credentials to smartphones will be handled by EnStream, which is owned jointly by Rogers, Bell, and Telus.

Suretap transactions use MasterCard Paypass or Visa payWave contactless payment protocols. American Express, which has issued contactless cards in Canada since 2011, is not participating in suretap.

Card issuers in Canada with their own mobile payments apps

include TD, RBC, Bank of Nova Scotia, CIBC, Desjardins, and President’s Choice. Some are

York related to the anti-steering provision in Section 3.2 of its Merchant Reference Guide. However, it has agreed to give American Express a new trial to relitigate the same anti-steering provision beginning the week of November 23, 2015. U.S. District Court Judge Nicholas Garaufis’ permanent injunction, which becomes effective July 20, 2015, gives merchants permission to influence a cardholder’s choice of a payment card by mentioning

brand name alternatives to American Express. The permanent injunction does not give merchants permission to surcharge, mischaracterize the American Express brand, make untrue statements,

or engage in disparaging conduct. However, American Express does not get to “prohibit, prevent, or restrain” a merchant from engaging in any practice protected by the injunction because it believes or asserts that a practice(s) disparages, mischaracterizes, or harms its business or brand. Merchants are permitted to offer a discount or rebate

for use of a Visa, MasterCard, or Discover card. They could also offer a free or discounted product or enhanced service or other kind of benefit. Merchants can post information about card brands and products to influence cardholder’s decisions.

American Express will send a notification letter in August to merchants advising of the changes to its Merchant Reference Guide. It will also set up a website to offer additional information and relevant documents.

The trial in the Court of Appeals is scheduled for November 2015.

The payment app is stored in a Secure Element on the SIM.

expected to make their debit and credit cards available to the suretap wallet as CIBC has done. CIBC, Canada’s 3rd largest credit card issuer-based on purchase volume, will support suretap for all of its credit products. Card issuers that don’t have their own mobile payment apps are also expected to support suretap.

More than 30 private label prepaid cards are preloaded with the suretap app, and more will be added. Participating retailers are expected to add loyalty applications.

The suretap mobile app supports Android and BlackBerry devices, which account for 65% of smartphones in Canada. Apple

smartphones account for the other 35%. Apple Pay is expected to launch in Canada by year-end. Suretap hopes to have 3 to 5 million of suretap SIMs in the market by year-end.Jeppe Dorff is President at Suretap
