NACOA - THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR CHILDREN OF ALCOHOLICS
The Festival is used as a platform for Nacoa to raise funds and more importantly awareness of the work they do to address the problems children have growing up in families where one or both parents suffer from alcoholism. Celebrity patrons such as Elle Macpherson, Geraldine James OBE, and Fergal Keane OBE are proud supporters of the only organisation in the UK which offers these services. Upfest is a volunteer based festival and has so far raised £30,000 for the charity.

A BRISTOL ‘WALL’?
The Wall that divided the city of Berlin between 1961 and 1989 was the most potent symbol of the Cold War, representing the division of a continent into two hostile blocks. Closer to home, for the people of Berlin, it represented enforced separation from family and friends.
November 2014 marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of that extraordinary night, and October 2015 will see the twenty-fifth anniversary of the reunification of West and East Germany that followed. To commemorate these events, the German Department of the University of Bristol has joined forces with ten local secondary schools, a Cardiff based art group,Routes into Languages South West and Upfest,to produce a public art project entitled ‘What I would have painted on the Berlin Wall’.
Visit St Francis Church to see the children's creation as well as live painting from Thiery Noir, born in 1958 in Lyon, France, he went to Berlin in January 1982. In April 1984, Noir began to paint the Berlin Wall and is credited as being the first artist to do so. Noir’s objective was to perform one real revolutionary act: To paint the Berlin wall, to transform it, to make it ridiculous, and to help destroy it preempting its ultimate fall in 1989.
Noir covered the Berlin Wall, more than 3 metres high, with bright, vivid colours, aiming not to embellish the wall but to demystify it. Noir’s iconic, bright and seemingly innocent works painted on this deadly border symbolised a sole act of defiance and a lone voice of freedom.
SCRIBBLE 'N' SCRATCHAT THE TOBACCO FACTORY CAFE BAR
Upfest wouldn’t be Upfest without a battle! This year our friends at Bristol’s Scribble ‘N’ Scratch night have taken on the mantle of entertaining the crowds! Get ready for ink, sweat but hopefully no tears! Illustration battles are the new boxing matches of the drawing class, so come along to the Tobacco Factory Cafe Bar and support everyone involved!
SCRIBBLE TIMES HEAT 1SATURDAY: 12 - 1:30PMHEAT 2SATURDAY: 6PM - 7:30PMHEAT 3SUNDAY: 12 - 1:30PM GRAND FINALSUNDAY: 4PM - 5:30PM
Scribble ‘N’ Scratch is a monthly illustration battle and hip-hop night based in Bristol. The main focus of the battles is to take artists out of their comfort zone and push their boundaries as artists, whilst giving the artists a platform to show their skills and abilities. It also gives art lovers, fellow artists and the general public the chance to see pieces of themed art created live in a short period of time.
Accompanying the illustration battles they have a selection of up and coming Bristol based DJ’s, spinning hip-hop, funk, soul and breaks, all with the added touch of some turntable trickery. And bringing the whole set together they have local MC’s blessing the MIC with pre-written and free-styled, rhythmical wordplay.
For more info about the monthly battles find them on Facebook:www.facebook.com/Scribble.N.Scratch
